Day 11: Hunterville to Palmerston North, 140 km. The Donkey and Spot have to dig deep The Donkey woke up the next morning to more rain, not just rain; it was hosing down, or bucketing down. The Donkey often used these expressions as well as it was closer to reality than the cats and dogs thing. But he did wonder who filled and emptied the buckets, and what if they let go of a bucket, by accident, and the bucket landed on somebody’s head, who would be responsible and can you insure for that? The Donkey decided to stick to hosing down and not think any further because he had to get on his bike. This time he was not going to wait, 1) because it had not worked the previous day and 2) he wanted ... read more

I'm currently sat outside the front of my house on Christmas Eve. In a tank top and sunglasses. After having just finished work, had an ice cream and set my bleep down for a 4 day rest. All at once this seems strange yet isn't strange. I think I've finally settled into Palmerston North and now I'm more comfortable in my new role, I'm more comfortable with my new surroundings. And my new surroundings are amazing! This week I have had 5 ice creams, 3 afternoons chilling, 2 longboard rides in the sun, and 1 death (patient, and expected). Christmas, as we all know in the northern hemisphere, is a time to wrap up warm, read by the fire and be with loved ones, and my first Christmas abroad couldn't be more different. I'm going to ... read more

Kia Ora, On July 2, Pacific time, I boarded a plane and embarked on a journey to New Zealand. After a 22 hour flight, a few kind conversations with strangers and many aimless wanderings through airports, I found myself standing in a room dusted with cob webs and a field of sheep to the right of my window. My bags are unpacked, the cobwebs have been swept away and the sheep out my window are fluffy. I cannot wait to share my life here in Palmerston with family and friends. With Love, Tess ... read more

Thursday night we had tea and then went over to Trish and Tommys place. Kids had a ball playing with Ethan and Grace and Trish and I tried to set up their new notebooks to our computer so the kids can talk to each other on windows live when we're back in NZ. Everyone managed to stay awake to see the ball drop in Times square, New York, where we were yesterday. Dick Clarke came on as he has done for the last 36 years, Ryan Seacrest hosted the show from there as Dick had a stroke last year and is not quite what he used to be.We saw where New Zealand was the 1st place in the world to celebrate new years from the sky tower. Friday we got up early and did the last ... read more

A few more days to the BIG trip... just winding down at the office really. I think the pack I'm carrying is more than the 25kg recommended. Here's hoping these legs don't fail me now (although they are quite scarred from all those crazy tramps..thanks Caro!) Well it's too late to change those boots now regardless of the pain it inflicts...note to any future BCampers, expensive boots do not equate to comfort :-( Roll on sunshine coz I only gotta few days to get that tan before -20deg hits me. So for those complaining that the temp doesn't get up to 30deg here in NZ...think of me then... read more
