Waitomo is an area which has about 300 caves. One which I have now explored to some extent. Now, to actually get into the cave...well we had to abseil down into the darkness for about 35 metres. At one point it got really narrow but I weaved my way through. The rope was so heavy that I couldn't get a clean smooth descent until I was much further down. We were all equipped with helmets that had head lamps which was cool, twas very scary when you turned them out though! After walking for a little while we had to take a flying fox down to the lower part of the cave...in pitch black! It was so scary sliding down this pulley system at quite a speed, but the glow worms on the ceiling took your ... read more

Wow! I know it's been a while, but the wait was worth it, I promise! Daddy and I just got back from an amazing, whirlwind trip to the South Island. Before that I was working on an organic farm over Easter weekend, so there's lots to tell! I'll start with the farm. It was through a program called Wwoof - Willing Workers on Organic Farms. Basically farms become a part of it so that they can get extra help in exchange for room and board and a great experience. I worked on Castle Craig Farm, owned by a family, the parents, Colin and Dorothy, living in one house and their daughter and her husband, Christabel and Guy, living in another house they had moved onto the property. They all moved over from England in 2001, where ... read more

We have been black water rafting today and it was fantastic, if not a little scary! It is not really rafting at all, more a cross between caving and tubing. You get kitted out in wetsuits, helmets with lights on the front and these very tasteful white boots. You then get given a big rubber ring to sit on and you are ready to go. We started off by walking in the caves which are between ankle deep and waist deep in water. The first bit of tubing involved getting on our rings and lying right back so we could float through a section of cave with a very low roof. You had to lie horizontal or else you would not fit. I found this bit a scary! After that it was sections of walking and ... read more

We left Hahei today to drive to Waitomo – we are going black water rafting tomorrow. The only highlight of the journey was that we went to Cambridge! It is not as nice as the ‘real’ Cambridge. It is MUCH newer for a start and it is a fraction of the size. There was also no university as far as we could see. Lots of people said “It is like the one in the UK”! I can only assume they have not been there. It is a nice enough small town and it gave us a chance to take the obligatory photo and buy a post card.... read more

... read more

9.11.05 We drove to Otorohanga through Tirau where they had dog and sheep shaped buildings which were unusual. We got to Otorohanga had a short walk around here then moved onto Waitomo, where we planned to do some caving. We made the most of the sun and got sunbathing around the pool. That evening we went for a walk to a look out point (that means steep climbing) It was a great view though. After dinner we went for a drive in the dark to scenic reserve where there were glow worms by the river. Armed with our little torch we set off. Straight away in the carpark we saw a possum! Which is surprising because all the parks have poison down to kill them as they eat the kiwis and are regaurded as pests. After ... read more

Firstly - congratulations to sis for getting offer excepted on the house - fingers x it all goes smoothly! Thanks also to Laura for being concerned for my safety but am still here to tell the tale! And to Bigbro - Adrenaline - the best is yet to come - The black Abyss! Well we cruised on down to Waitomo in very heavy rain, and arrived at Blackwater cafe where theres a number of optional tours - we ofcourse went for the most exhilarating wahey! This starts with a 35 metre abseil down an hour glass shaped pothole which seemed to last forever - previous lesson in abseiling was also included b4 this! On reaching the bottom we ended up in a massive cave which we proceeded to follow down a small passage way. Then you ... read more

Today started out slightly later giving me an opportunity to have a breif walk down the main street in Rotorua and get a final whiff of the rotten egg sulphur smell! Short hop on the bus today, which still included a brief stop to take in the wonders of a monster pedestrian suspension bridge! Arrived in Waitomo which is tiny, but the YHA is really nice accommodation. Was picked up at lunch time to go to the Waitomo Black Water Rafting Company! Went on Black Abyss! So, to summerise: I abseiled down thirty five metres into the cave! Walked a short distance. Took a zip line down a bit deeper! Had a cup of tea. Got into my tube on the water! Tubed along for a bit under some amazing glow worms! Had some 'team building ... read more

Instead of Skydiving we donned wet suits and gumboots and went caving in the Waitomo region - including a 27m rappel down into a gorge, lots of underground blackwater rafting (on truck tire inner tubes), being swept away by the rapids a few times (don't ask), dodging stalagtites (some can be quite sharp), squeezing through holes that were not designed for squeezing through, admiring glowworms, generally getting wet in the dark and finally rock climbing out again in the driving rain and darkness. Superb! And followed the best hot showers and chinese takeaway ever!!... read more

As you have probably noticed so far, I am doing here in New Zealand things that are VERY different. The last 3 days were probably the most different adventure I have done here. The Whanganui river journey, as it is called, is one of NZ "great walks" as they defined. But it's not a walk - it's a canoe journey. You pack all your stuff in water proof barrels, tie them to the canoe, take paddles (one each and one spare... just in case), put yourself and your partner on the canoe, and off you go. No guide, no group - it's just us and the river. In the season or in the weekend there are probably many canoes there, but the day we started, only one more English couple started too. We got a very ... read more
