Nice day today so we will stay in Napier for another day. Di is up early pottering about; I take the opportunity for a lie-in. Di has made breakfast, so we eat and I go to shower rather late at around 10:00. I then fill up the water in the motorhome and do the “slopping out” so we will be in good shape to set off early on Sunday. We then head off into Napier to fuel up again so we do not have to do this on Sunday at our early start. We park-up on the sea front and walk into town. The town had been quiet on Friday, but today there is a real sense of Saturday morning. (Being away for 2 months – tends to make all the days merge, so you are ... read more

Wednesday 2nd – we woke to a clear blue sky and, although we had not made any specific plans, the day began to develop quite nicely. We had spotted a couple of interesting sculptures on our “duck” tour which had also travelled passed the aquarium so we made the sculptures and the aquarium the focus of our morning. The main sculpture we wanted to see represented the sunrise as Napier is the second city in the world (3 seconds after Gisborne) to witness a sunrise each morning and, of course, to experience New Year celebrations. This particular sculpture was erected to commemorate the millennium and was a pretty impressive, though simple construction. The Aquarium was virtually next door so was an obvious next stop and what a good stop it was. Just as we arrived and ... read more

Tuesday 1st March – the start of another new month – where does the time go to? We had finally arrived in Napier the previous evening at about 6.30pm after our enjoyable diversion to Gisborne. It had been a long day and to locate our motel we drove through the city centre, admiring the splendid architecture as we went. Hastings Street and the Bella Vista motel was quite easy to find – pretty central – handy to both the city and the beach. We booked in, dumped our bags and walked the few hundred meters back along the road into the centre to get a couple of takeaways. Then, fully refreshed, we sorted ourselves out and settled in for our 3 night stay. Napier is in the centre of Hawke’s Bay and, given recent events in ... read more

Auckland! Well I am starting this in Auckland, but as we have a long way to go in New Zealand, I am not sure when it will end, and you will all catch up!! I had forgotten how much I loved this place until we arrived again today! I feel so old, it is definitely for young people, busy, vibrant and exciting! If I were to jump ship, it would probably be here and now! What a fantastic mix of Colonial, Imperial and Modern innovative exciting youngsters, even the Grandparents make me look old! The only trouble is that I would have to learn to sail, it is for the sure the best pastime here! Well we have spent the day sightseeing, and walking around this lovely city, after such a long spell at sea, it ... read more

We went to Napier, an art deco town on the East coast of North Island. It was re-built in art deco style in the 1930s following a big earthquake. There are still earthquakes happening here all the time. We went to Opossum World where they make very expensive jumpers and socks from possum fur. "We're on the road again..."!... read more

Morning all, we are on our last leg of our trip to New Zealand but my travelblog is on week 1. That's good 'cause I can relive this great road journey. I wanted to just say when I closed my last blog. While still in the 'Bay of Plenty' Kiwi growing county. I read that the kiwi fruit we all eat was originally the Chinese gooseberry. some New Zealand farmers' took it, mess around with it a bit and out came this big sweet fruit. some of the saftey road signs are of kiwi fruit. A family of kiwi fruit all wearing their seat belts. A group of flat kiwi, not paying attention to the road. etc. On the road to Napier, now on the highway 5 through forests, and I mean real forests! until we ... read more

Hey everybody! We're currently in New Zealand but are gearing up for our last country on our tour - USA. When we arrived in NZ, we flew into Auckland but it was a very brief stop and we'll be going back for our flight so we'll leave that until later. Next morning we headed off to sky city and caught a bus to Napier, the scenery was amazing just even passing through farm land and as we were used to far longer trips we sat back and relaxed, even falling asleep on the final leg as the three time zone jumps in 5 days started to catch up on us! Luckily we managed to wake up just before our stop and we were met by Kevin who took us back to their home in Havelock North ... read more

Happy Birthday Mum - hope you have a lovely day! And to everyone else, Happy St George’s Day - celebrate in style! I think we have had a sign of things to come ... our days have been absolutely glorious up until now, and people keep telling us how lucky we are with daytime temperatures in the mid 20s and bright blue skies - but last night was the coldest we’ve had so far - we even had condensation on the windows! We were snuggled up together all night, but I wonder whether we’ll be purchasing another blanket soon! However, the sun was shining brightly this morning, and we sat for a while just admiring the wonderful site that we’d found whilst watching the adventure canoes set off down the river. John describes the area as ... read more

Napier - Bloody sand flies!!!! We drove back south down the same route we had come along heading for Taupo, stopping just out side the town to view the Huka falls. Not as spectacular as Niagara but very noisy with a hell of a lot of water rushing past which was a lovely aqua marine colour. The drive from Taupo to our DOC site was a long and winding road (don’t start singing, Nath does and he’s no x-factor finalist) with no petrol stops on it at all.( luckily we’d filled up back in Taupo) and headed in the late afternoon sun to the DOC site I had only a road name for. On our travels down from Rotorua we had been “followed” by another camper that seemed to be going the same way as us, ... read more

Mandag 7 dec. Vi ... read more
