It's almost bedtime here in paradise, but we have so much to write! First of all, I posted all of the pictures that we have been telling you about. So, check out the entries from this past week and the pictures for them should be up. Second, we hope to get a calling card soon! It is really cheap from here at the hotel, so it would be nice to get a phone set up. We are loving our lives here! Christoffel and Alison invited us to stay at their home last night. They live an hour away and commute either here or an hour and a half to Auckland for their paramedic jobs. I don't know how they do it. Plus, Alison is 20 weeks pregnant! They made us steak, lamb chops, and cole slaw ... read more

We are in Waihi!!! It was really strange to pack up at the house in Auckland since we stayed there so long. They were good to us! The road trip was easy, only two and a half hours, and we got here right at noon ready to go. So this is it! We have arrived to our home for the next two months. We are all moved in and caught up with Christoffel and Alison. They trained us in on the giant fancy coffee machine, so Jack and I now know how to make all the drinks on the menu! Maybe not very well, but in time. We learned more about coffee today than I ever thought there was to know. Chris and Alison are all about quality with everything they make and serve, and hopefully ... read more

I don't know where to begin! Yesterday checked out from the time share, climbed the beautiful Mount one last time, and headed over the bridge. We had planned on staying in Tauranga for the night, but it turned out to be too expensive. NZ is a commonwealth, and the Queen's birthday is on Monday, so this whole weekend is a big holiday. We were basically driven out of the big city and headed west. We wanted to take our time driving through the small towns, crash in the last one, and make a short trip the next morning into Auckland. This would give us a day to get our bearings in the city, find a place to stay that night, then wake up and meet with our new flatmates. While driving through the villages, we had ... read more

... read more

Another perfect day in paradise. After a lazy morning with breakfast in the little garden overlooking Hot Water Beach, we packed up for a short hike. About 15 minutes away was a trail the leads to Cathedral Cove. The hike started at the top of the overlook and took about 30-40 minutes down the trail. The end of the trail put us on a small beach with a rock formation similar to the Hole in the Rock (see above). The difference is that at low tide you walk through instead of sail through. The archway is the “cathedral”. We took a bunch of pictures, scrambled around some rocks, and ended the visit by finding a geocache that almost beat us (Amy didn’t give up). After the hike back up the mountain, we had earned some food. ... read more

Having struggled to make NZ work, things are looking up today after a brief trip to Cathedral Cove on the North-East side of the Coromandel Peninsular. We arrived too late last night to take the 45min walk down to the bay so camped out in the carpark to hike down this morning. The bay was beautiful, and practically deserted apart from a wedding under the tree covered rocks and white sand. We were lucky to get enough time to see it all and walk through the huge archway through the rock between the bays before the ever-changing tempremental weather flipped from georeous sunshine to cold rain. Tried our luck on our way out at Hot Water Beach on top of volcanic springs, but arrived just too late to dig a spa pool (murphy's law) and settled ... read more

Updated 19 MAR 07 The previous night was both fantastic and strange. After lots of drinks and a sumptuous BBQ dinner we adjurned for the night to bed. and fell instantly to sleep. It was a big, Big day. We were woken up in the early hours of the morning by a strange noise. We con not recognise it. It just grew loader and louder and louder. It was vaguely familiar but I couldn’t quite place it. Anyway it lulled me back off to sleep very quickly. Quite Strange that. I found in the morning that the ground as also all wet. Still I couldn’t place what had happened. Its was all very familiar, yet alien all at the same time. I was told later by a local that this is what happens when it ... read more

On the 19th we headed to Waihi to check out the gold mine that is still in operation. The Martha Mine produces about 80% of NZ gold. We could walk along the top of the mine and look down into the huge pit that they have dug away. Dave liked the big machinery! From there we headed to Karangahake Gorge where we did a walk through old gold mining tunnels. The walk we did was called the Windows Walk, because the wall of main tunnel had been cut out at different spots along it so the waste rock could be dumped out into the Ohinemuri river 200ft below. It was a really good walk, with lots of chances for Dave to get lost in all the old mining tunnels if I’d let him. From there we ... read more

Howdy all! Just thought we should let you all know what we've been up too lately - - - - apart from being wonderfully lazy, reading on the beach! Here is where we have been since last time...... We made it too Opatiki, where the Pacafic Ocean was blue and calm, the sun hot and barmy. This was a happy change from the churning and rugged west coast at New Plymouth. After lazing there for a while we journeyed up the coast to Papamoa and surfed next to the mile after mile of blond sand, in metre high waves and under blue sky. Whilst there we explored several "Pa" (which are the equvilent of our stone age hill forts, yet only a few centuries old dating from the 18th and 19th centuries and maori civilisation), had ... read more
