Matt Writes: 7am and we are off along a dirt road, following a creek. The canopy is dusted with sunlight as we cross the Coromandel Range and its corresponding forest park. Our destination, the idylic beach of Hahei, where we prepare a great breakfast of cereal, bacon sarnies, fruit and tea. I can't help but notice the envious glares of the 4 surfers cramped into an estate (probably where they had spent the night). Enjoying the warmth of the rising sun we watch early morning dippers out for a swim before work, a jogger writing footprints the length of the bay and dogs stretching their legs with yappy conversation along the way. A quick dip and muck about on the golden sands and off to some local shops where we pick up some info on a ... read more

On Sunday we, Rina, Carrie, Anita and I, set off on our road trip heading South from Auckland. The Coromandel Peninsular was our first stop and after a few scenic stop offs on the way we arrived in Cormandel Town. We stayed at a campsite there in newly purchased $50 3 man tent, it was cosy but so much cheaper than dorms so def worth the squeeze. The next morning we left Cormandel and headed to Hahei on the other side of the Peninsular. The campsite we stayed in there was gorgeous, just off a beautiful beach, shame we only stayed there one night really. On arrival we decided to go on a sunset guided Kayak tour around the bay and Cathedral Cove, a famous cove a little further along the beach. The kayaking was wicked, ... read more

Fri 4th Jan: I arrived in Auckland at 0025 and headed off to collect my rucksack. I dropped my hand luggage by my feet and the next thing I know, this very cute trainee sniffer dog is at my feet! Fortunately that's not the reason I've been so slow updating my blog (just having a good time and being lazy on that front!!!). It apparently picked up the smell of my marmite and branston pickle, LOL!!! After that trauma, go my bag and found my shuttle waiting for me. 40 mins later I arrived at the Fat Camel hostel and checked in. I got to my private room and just about ready to fall into bed. Was not impressed when the fan didn't work so I actually spent about 5hrs trying to sleep in a sweat ... read more

As we travelled down the east side of the Coromandal, we stopped off at one or 2 tourist spots for a look. It is the holiday season here for New Zealanders, so some places are a bit like honeypots, and we didn't stay too long. They are still beautiful!!! ... read more

23.11.07 Finally the day especially Eskil had been looking forward to arrived. We were going to pick up our camper today. Everybody was a bit excited to see what our home for the next 5 weeks would look like. After a long and thorough introduction to all the technicalities we finally were allowed inside the van. It looked really nice with a lot of luxuries such as tv, dvd, microwave etc. Drove off towards Coromandel Peninsula and Hahei Beach. We started with some beginner difficulties and while driving everything in the kitchen made an enormous noise because we hadn’t packed things properly. Originally we had planned to go directly to Rotorua but we had decided to see a bit of Coromandel first. The road was very, very winding and Paul had a challenge in getting used ... read more

After spending 3 fun days in Rotorua (I HIGHLY recommend the Rotorua Museum of Art and History), our 2 families decided to explore a bit further north, taking the road up past Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty and up into the Coromandel Pennisula along the Pacific Coast Highway (which must be the OTHER Pacific Coast Highway because everybody knows that the original PCH goes down US-101 from Washington to California.) Turns out this is a pretty winding road, and, for the first time since I was a kid (and my dad was on a bender to make it from Oregon to Wisconsin and refused to stop the car for any bodily needs), I threw up in the car. That's how winding the road was. Despite that, it was great trip! I absolutely love the fern ... read more

Today we headed to the Coromandel Peninsula, southeast of Auckland. We said goodbye to the Bavaria B&B and rented our little car. Driving on the left side of the road was really pretty easy and we made it out of the city and on to the highway. We took a few stops to enjoy the scenery, do some shopping, and hunt some geocaches. We even stopped at someone’s house to buy some avocadoes. Our route crossed some small mountains and there were some sections just like West Virginia switchbacks. The scenery along the Coromandel Coast was beautiful, lots of looks over blue harbors as we wound through the mountains right along the water. (Note from Amy: Brian is doing a fantastic job driving and all I’m doing is feeling sick from all of the “swirlies”). We ... read more

It was a very hot night, punctuated by heavy rain and the fact that I fell out of bed! It wasn’t a loud crash, but I was awake enough to stop myself hitting the floor. That’ll teach me to ensure the double bed is set up each night, rather than the single one! Still, I had a good night’s sleep and awoke on time at 06h30. I washed, got myself dressed without any adult assistance and went into town for a slap up breakfast at Mrs Ahmed’s Pie Shop. After reading the paper (world news demoted to a single page), I made my way back to the van, packed everything (nearly) away and went off to hand in my keys (and claim my $10 refund). That done, it was later than I’d have liked and I ... read more

The Coromandel Peninsular We drove through kauri forests to the beautiful Coromandel Peninsular for the day. We stopped at Hahei Beach, which was simply stunning in the sunshine, for a spot of lunch. We cooked delicious fluffy pancakes overlooking the sea and then walked off our yummy feast by trekking down to Cathedral Cove. At the bottom of the cliff, you find an incredible archway eroded from the limestone cliffs. It was well worth the walk, as the sea was a gorgeous aquamarine, playfully lapping at the white sandy shore, paradise! We puffed our way back up the hill and drove to Hot Water Beach. Getting ourselves into hot water Typically the sun decided to disappear behind the clouds when we arrived at Hot Water Beach. Undetered, we hired a spade and dashed across the beach ... read more
