Carey, Cath and Daryl were up bright and breezy to walk up the Mount-I decided to have a little bit longer in bed, and meet them for breakfast afterwards. We went to a little Cafe on the beachfront called the Slow fish-recommendation of Caths and what a lovely breakfast it was. Carey was trying to persuade Daryl to jack work in and move out here, and i was assured he'd be sorted out with a visa by the time we returned from our afternoon trip! Afterwards Cath and I picked the other girls up from the main house as we were going to the vineyard for lunch. Our first night in New Zealand was spent in a gorgeous YHA with only 3 rooms, in Te Aroha, Waikato country. It was refreshing, after the dry Australian bush, to see lush green grass and trees, but it took us some getting used to all the buttercups, daisies and blackbirds; only the towering tree ferns reminded us that we weren't at home. We enjoyed our first week in Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty in balmy temperatures and sunshine. We hit the tourist spots in Rotorua, dipping in thermal pools and touring the geysers, but our highlight was a morning spent with mountain bikes in Whakarewarewa Redwood Forest, a forest of over 90 km of graded mountain biking trails. Die letzten Winterwochen und der Fruehling ist schon nicht mehr nur um die Ecke - die Blumen schiessen buchstaeblich aus dem Boden, die Baeume bluehen als waer's der letzte Fruehling auf Erden und die Voegel zwitschern ohne Luftholen... Es ist schon iemlich schwer in die Gaenge zu kommen - nachdem wir uns so richtig ans Ausschlafen am Wochenende gewoehnt haben! Frueh aufstehen? Klingt ja fast schon stressig ... Abfahrt zu'ner festen Zeit ... und fertig mit Fruehstuecken und Anziehen und Morgentoilette. Hm, na das schlechte Gewissen arbeitet sich den Wolf ab und nach ein paar sonnigen Wochenenden klappts auch endlich. Unser erster Ausflug hat uns mal wieder in den Karangahake Gorge gefuehrt, eine Autostunde von Papamoa. So, about 3 months ago I promised a blog entry about my time in Tauranga working, right? Maybe it's time I got around to describing that chapter :P (looking at the dates on the pictures...damn that was back in june!) After Hamilton I headed for Tauranga, in the famous Bay of Plenty area, known for there being plenty of fruit, and plenty of work. In my usual style, I didn't reserve a hostel in advance, and when I finally got close around 19.00 (remember, this was my first solo drive longer than an hour, and driving in NZ still scared me at this point) I looked up hostels known for organising work according to my guidebooks..the first one didn't pick up the phone, so Harborside Hostel in central Tauranga it is! ...nix los hier unten in den letzten Monaten, daher auch keine Eintraege, wollten Euch nicht langweilen mit Wiederholungen ;) Der Winter in diesem Jahr ist genauso seltsam und fast aussergewoehnlich wie er vergangene extrem trockene und heisse Sommer - es ist immernoch 15 Grad "warm" an den meisten Tagen und auch nachts geht das Termometer nicht wirklich unter 5 Grad. was nicht heisst, das es paradiesisch ist, so ohne richtige Heizung ist das ja immernoch relativ kuehl und man braucht schon extra Decken hier und da und viel heissen Tee mit Honig. Die Nasen laufen auch immer wieder mal, aber bisher zum Glueck nichts schlimmes. Habe die Jungs mal zum Billardspielen in den Pub ausgefuehrt - die beiden waren natuerlich ganz begeistert, ist ja auch echt cool mit den Grossen auszuhaengen, 'ne Flasche Cola in der ... read more

In this update: my trip to Hamilton/Waitomo Caves, but first: how's my driving? So far, I have: Hit another car: 1x Gotten another car scratched: 1x (well actually someone put the door open against another car..) Driven on the wrong/right side of the road: 3x (or was it 4?) Broken into a sweat because of the traffic situation I found myself in: a couple of times Driven off the road by accident: 2x Got into a car skid: 2x Driven the wrong way: a handful of times Driven some distance with the handbreak still on: too embarrassing to mention Gotten inexplicably stuck on a road that's not on the map: 1x Gotten honked at (I know I shouldn't have backed up on the highway, and you know, stop earlier at intersections): 2 times So yeah, I ... read more

April, April, das Wetter macht was es will - und es wird eben mal kein Herbst in diesem Jahr! So. Dieses Ostern sind wir sehr früh aufgestanden. Naja ich und Tim jedenfalls ... Mama war im Bett bis um 10 Uhr! Ungefähr um 10.30 Uhr hat Mama die Osternester versteckt. Ich hab geguckt und geguckt, aber ich habe das Nest nicht gefunden. Ich hab fast aufgegeben und dann habe ich hinters Haus geguckt und es gefunden unter einer Box! Tim hatte da immer noch nicht sein Nest gefunden. Zuletzt hat er in den Schuppen geguckt und da war es hinter unseren Bodybords. In unseren Nestern hatten wir jeder einen grossen Hase aus Schokolade und da waren auch viele kleine Ostereier und Lutscher. wir hatten auch jedereinen grossen Schokoriegel. Offizieller Herbstanfang - nur der Herbst weiss es noch nicht, die Sonne strahlt seit Wochen vom porzelanblauen Himmel und die Tiefsttemperaturen "fallen" Nachts "schon mal" auf 18 Grad... Dieses Wochenende war Mama's Geburtstag... hip hip horay!!!! Wir gingen zum Waimarino Abenteuerpark. Dort gab viele (Wasser)aktivitäten wie einen Blob (ein riesiges Luftkissen im Wasser wo einer an einem Ende sitzt und ein anderer am anderen Ende drauf springt), eine Kajakrutsche, einen warmen Pool, eine Rutschbahn, Tretboote, Kajaks, Sprungplattformen, einen Seilgarten, eine Kletterwand und eine Tarzanschaukel. Mir hat die Kajakrutsche an meisten gefallen nur leider konnten wir anstatt mit einem richtigen Kajak nur auf Schaummatten hinunterrutschen da die Strömung im Fluss zu stark war.
