We arrived in Auckland on the night of 16 December and were glad it wasn't far to the hotel. Rain poured; wind howled. Vile. The next day we drove to Thames, then to Katikati in our lime green hired car, staring out of the window at the rain and mist and wishing it would all stop. The rain slowed to a drizzle in Katikati and I went for a walk in my Goretex waterproofs. Katikati is cool. There are colourful murals depicting the history of the town, fun-looking restaurants and signs informing visitors of the many things to do. I opted for the haiku walk and ambled through a lovely riverside park reading poetry on large rocks interspersed among the grass and trees. I saw tuis and kingfishers that posed for me as they knew I ... read more

Saturday January 4th, 2014. Bay of Plenty and Drive to Coromandel, North Island, NZ We awoke in Tauranga after a really good night's sleep. Tauranga means "safe anchorage or resting place" in Maori. It is the main town on the Bay of Plenty. The Maori originally voyaged here from Eastern Polynesia. In the late 13th or early 14th century 3 Waka (canoes) landed in the Bay of Plenty. They found a coastline richly resourced with seafood and forests with many birds an berries for food as well as timber for buildings. One of the 1st recorded European visitors was Captain Cook who sailed past Mt Maunganui in 1969. James Farrow was the first permanent trader who came here in 1829 to obtain flax fibre for Australian merchants. We didn't stick around as this was yet another ... read more

Eva is Clive's 2e vrouw. Zo heeft ... read more

I stayed with a family of four; James and Victoria with their two boys (aged two and five). James is English and Victoria a Kiwi but she lived in England for 15 years, where they met and decided to move out of London to a more peaceful lifestyle in New Zealand. They have a lovely open plan house, in a nice rural setting so there were some great views. I had a decent room with an en suite! There’s also a lodge which they rent out to guests who can then access the pool and gardens. Most of the time I was doing various gardening jobs, which was pretty good with the sun shining for the majority of the week. They had a small vegetable patch, so we ate a few home-grown things, including strawberries (one ... read more

Hello everyone from sunny Katikati!! Well most of you will already know that I'm back from my travels and have been for a while now....I seem to have lost interest in updating this blog when the trip came to an end! After my 5 weeks in Thailand and Cambodia I returned to Sydney but didn't hang around very long, I instead flew on to Adelaide to catch up with Tory before I head back to NZ. We spent the whole time I was there down at Victor Harbour which for those of you who don't know is about 1 hour from Adelaide on the coast, it's a lovely little holiday town with a fabulous beach and the best hot dogs in the world! Tory and I went for a few bike rides....with a lovely lunch at ... read more
