April 9 - 14 - Bay of Islands and North of Auckland Wow, I can't believe I am a month behind on this entry! I don't know where the time goes.... Left Timaru late afternoon on Thurs. April 9th. Spent the night at the Airport Gateway Motel in an awesome 3 bedroom, 2 bath, full kitchen room. We wished we had arrived earlier to enjoy it as we knew the next 9 nights in a camper van were going to be tight quarters! We were taken by limo to the airport for our 7am flight to Auckland. It took until nearly noon to get settled with the camper van and get on the road. It was Good Friday and we were unaware that nearly everything shuts down. We've heard that only 1/3 of all New Zealanders ... read more

Day 10 / 11 Stopped at the Hururu falls and took 5km track across Mangrove swamp (wooden walkway!) to the historic Waitangi treaty grounds where the original treaty between the British and the Mauris was signed. First night near Pahia, then next morning across on the 10minute car ferry to Russell. Superb campsite position with view over town and bay. Went on fast catamaran cruise - saw dolphins, some of the 146 islands, went through the "hole in the rock" and then had an hour on Urupukapuka island when sun finally came out properly and the bay of islands was seen at its best.... read more

Left Orewa on Friday 30th after driving round to sort out a mobile phone for NZ numbers!! Drove North towards our next destination Bay of Islands stopping en route at Whangarei Falls for lunch. Headed for Opua and caught the ferry to Russell. Russell was the first European settlement in NZ and is a beautiful little colonial town, ideally based for exploring Bay of Islands. Campsite has all mod cons and we had a really good terraced site overlooking the Bay towards Paihai. On Sat 31st we booked ‘The Cream Trip’ - the last Royal Mail boat that travels round numerous small bays and inlets delivering mail and stores to the Islands. Full day trip 9 - 4.00 - what a fantastic day exceeded all expectations - weather very hot (29/30 degrees C) and brilliant sunshine. ... read more

1st November 2008 Russell Had an early flight up to Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands, followed by a shuttle bus to Pahia and a fast ferry to Russell. I stayed at Arcadia Lodge which is a brilliant B & B run by Brad and Dave. Brad used to be foreign affairs editor for Channel 4 news at the same time as Rory was working for them. He remembered Rory - and actually liked him!! Just as well or I might have got burnt toast. The weather wasn't great but that made it seem more like Devon. The view from my window reminded me very much of Newton Ferrers where David's parents used to live. I did several walks around the local area to beaches and Flagstaff Hill. On one, I was accompanied by a dog ... read more

We have to say that We have to say that our decision to travel to almost the top of NZ was certainly the correct decision. The beauty of this place is overwhelming. We had a prize position in the Holiday Park in Russell, the view of the window of the van was fabulous. We looked out over the bay with yachts and boats drifting past in the clear blue water, the sun was shining (not a cloud in the sky) and individual islands everywhere. Nancy has asked me to relate to you what happened when we first arrived at the Park. We had booked in at reception and were driving to our site when Nancy issued this almightly shout STOP. Nancy had seen a family of Californian Quail, that was both parents and 7 tiny little ... read more

18th September 2008 In rained all night and disappointedly the dive was cancelled because of an unusually large ocean swell. It seems the whales don’t want to meet us. Oh well we set off again to the Bay of Islands via a visit to the ‘Longest Foot Bridge in the Southern Hemisphere’. To our surprise we were met half way across by a lady leading a beautiful horse. The horse was in the water swimming, his morning exercise apparently, he seemed to really be enjoying himself. We also were welcome by a gorgeous dog which we made a big fuss of and thought of Barny and Lucy, a sad moment on a glorious morning. Pili insisted that we stopped off at Kawakawa to visit the World famous ‘Hunderwasser Toilets’. These amazing bogs were really made famous ... read more
