Day 10 & 11 - Tauranga Travelled from Auckland to the little coastal town of Tauranga, stopping briefly at Matamata (a town where the Hobbiton sections of the LOTR films were made which we found pretty exciting even though we were only there for a couple of hours! We finally had some sunshine, so broke out the shorts and sandals, but did not predict the cool sea breeze... We took the local bus to Mount Mauragui - a sharply rising extinct volcano that juts out into the sea. Decided on the path round the base rather than the steep climb up to the top, and were rewarded by seeing seals on the rocks which was pretty cool! Apparantly there were whales around as well but unfortunately we didn't spot any. Day12 Travelled inland to Rotorua, and ... read more

We have left the big city of Auckland and have moved on towards the northern edge of New Zealand.... We have been staying in a great hostel in the city of Paihia...We traveled up to the northern tip of New Zealand where the Tasman and the Pacific Ocean meet, we saw a bit of 90 Mile beach, we didn't trust our car to drive too far down it (although they do drive buses up and down the beach) Tomorrow we are off for an overnight cruise in the Bay of Island! ... read more

NZ Day 25. So, it started raining yesterday on our way back from Cape Reinga- about 2ish. Well it did stop a couple of times overnight, but pretty much continuous rain since then. We rang the national highway phone this morning to check if the highway we wanted to travel on was open. They had no reports of closures so off we set for the east coast & the Bay of Islands & a town called Paihai. Struth...has there been some rain. At first there was some puddles in the paddocks & a bit in the drains alongside the road. Then there were small lakes & then there was water everywhere....& I do mean everywhere!! I have never seen so much flamin’ water.....some of the creeks had burst their banks & it was going in every ... read more

I don't often moan, but... To be fair it's not all bad! I got to Auckland on Wednesday morning (flew from Cairns which has to be one of the smallest airports ever built) and was quickly diagnosed with savage man flu so that put me out of action for a couple of hours. I decided enough was enough by Thursday evening though and went out and got stupidly drunk on a pub crawl in Auckland and despite my condition I stayed out until 2am! Woooo, GO ME! I left my dorm room at 7pm, with no one else staying in my room, returned and there were 2 very posh people who looked at me like I was a complete nutter and also a bit like i was a monkey in a zoo when I stumbled through ... read more

I left Sydney on Sunday and arrived back in Auckland at 2am to catch my Magic Bus up to the very north of New Zealand at 7am! Exhausted!! Met some fun girls on the bus from England so once we arrived in Paihia at lunchtime we hit the beach! Topping up the tan before I come home!! Two of the girls were only here for one night so had a few drinks with them and our bus driver before headed to bed! Very long day! The next day Becks and I joined our Cape Reinga tour which is the furthest place in New Zealand, the very top. We stopped off at various places along the way but when we arrived at the top, we planted our own tree!! They cost $20 and give you the location ... read more

Hello all and welcome to my last blog! Can't believe it has been 9 weeks since I left the UK. In some respects it feels like a long time but it also feels like yesterday. So I arrived at Auckland airport and hadn't organised how I was going to get up to Paihia but I had realised that if I was going to make it back to Auckland in time for my flight on Saturday morning there was only one option - hire car! I booked it via the tourist information centre at the airport and requested a manual car which it turns out are cheaper - excellent news! The hire company aren't in the terminal but I only have to wait 5 minutes for them to come and pick me up. I know it was ... read more

Up for breakfast at around 07:30, another sunny day Breakfast is included in our package so we make the most of it. We also have a late check-out for 12:00, but being as we have the day planned we decide to check out early. We pack up the car and head off. Firstly we make for Kerikeri to look at he "Stone House" alongside the Kerikeri river. The house is the oldest stone building in NZ, and contains items that would have been bartered in earlier times such as blankets and muskets. We then head off to Haruru Falls, Gary and I were considering a walk from the falls back to the Waitangi Treaty House, but it will take about 2 hours and 40 minutes and we do not have the time to spare.Gary stopped at ... read more
