The US Consulate After a stint of personal contemplation on Ken's deck I prepared myself for my trip to the US Consulate. In the UK this process would probably rob you of a day of your life. Fortunately over here, despite the defensive armoury at my side (Dan Brown - Deception Point) the process was pretty painless. I rocked up for my 930 appointment at 915 and passed through security and right up to the 1st agent at 930 on the dot, only to discover I'd lost my DS-2019. "Oh no, how can you go to the US Embassy in search of a visa without your DS-2019?" you scornfully cry. Yeah, that's what I thought. After rapidly bringing the heel of my hand to my forehead 3 times in quick succession I looked at the agent, ... read more

One Tree Hill and Waiheke Island Ok. I've put together a few photos here from around Auckland and my day at Waiheke Island. The next blog will talk more about that as I'm plugging for a "homepage" slot on www.travelblog.org, so I'll keep that fairly civilised. Here, I'm gonna let the photos do the talking. They're talking pretty loud, and I think you here them... Enjoy. No charge.... read more

While surya updates you on the trip so far in australia (i forbit us from going to internet cafes in the start- trying to break his habit of checking his blackberry incessantly, so we are wee bit behind on our updates), i am going to bring on new zealand's north island... we arrived to auckland, which is truely a spectacular city- built on the ocean with views of finger bays, boats, islands, and mountains as far as you can see. it was nightime, so we b lined it to the hostel that i had insisted on staying in. all looked well until we climbed the stairs and became enwafted in the sweet and tangy smell of... was is mold? was is a herd of wet dogs? no, it was our little room. for those of you ... read more

So I quite my job on Saturday, I was a little disappointed that I wasn't fired, which is one of my goals for this vacation. I should explain the establishment I worked at called "no specifics"; it's located on a beautiful beach, has a beautiful view of islands in the Pacific and the Corromendal peninsula but unfortunately that's where the attraction stops. I think I should have figured out that it was a shitty place to work when I found out that there was no staff discount on alcohol (this of course was a shock to me after working at the "Library" which had a liberal staff alcohol policy). Also the managers treated everyone like there where better then us, I don't really think being a manager at a shitty/unpopular bar on an island that has ... read more

Today I got a pretty cool tour of one the vineyards on the island. The vineyard is called Saratoga, named after the part of California the owner came from. I was sitting at a restaurant on the beach, which is owned by the Saratoga vineyard drinking a couple beers with this American guy who stays at the hostel. Fortunately for me this American guy is a vine connoisseur/writer who has made a name for himself on the island. The owner over heard our conversation about vine and my American friends strong southern Virginian accent and sat down with us. The owner was obviously looking to show off his vineyard to my writer friend and invited us up to the vineyard. I of course jumped at the possibility of a little free alcohol and tagged along. We ... read more

If I was feeling home sick the last few days have cured me. It has rained so much the last few days it's ridiculous and the winds reached up to 120 km/h. This of course ruined my normal daily activity of sitting on the beach all day and getting a tan. Therefore instead of breaking routine, letting the weather get the best of us and sit inside and play board games, we headed for the beach! The storm had created some of the biggest waves our normally very still water beach had ever seen. Also became of all the warm rain water that had been spewing down the ocean was very warm. So we spent the two storming days at the beach jumping into waves. ... read more

Before you laugh, we were drunk and it seemed like a good idea. One of the guys that is staying at the hostel, is here from England to play cricket in Wellington and to help increase the popularity of the sport, he thought he would teacher a Canadian, a few Germans and an American how to play. I got to bat first and anyone who has seem me play golf, baseball or anything that involves hand eye coordination can predict that it took about two throws before the bowler( that's the guy who throws the ball!) was able to knock the wickets over (those where the sticks I was supposed to be protecting). I tried throwing my fat ass in front of the tennis ball, but was told that in a real cricket game the ball ... read more

i know these entries are REALLY late....but i'm going to post them anyway for the pictures and so you all know what a lucky girl i am. after skydiving we spent the day mountain biking in taupo. i saw melissa actually get so angry she kicked her bike....she didn't like it too much. i on the other hand had a blast. this day we also found the thermal pools (which we weren't looking for) to bask in. from taupo we spent another day travelling to waiheke island, a small island just 30 minutes by ferry outside of auckland....but with the feel of a completely secluded place. we arrived and were welcomed to our little cottage that overlooked the beach. we had a relaxing evening with a bottle of wine we bought on our tour in marlborough ... read more

Well, our trip around the world has come to an end and we have arrived safe and sound back at home just in time for christmas. It took us about 22 hours to get from Auckland to Minneapolis. It was a long day but we got to do some time travelling. We left Auckland at 7:30 pm on Thursday Dec. 22 and arrived in Minneapolis 22 hours later at 5:30 pm on the same day - Dec.22 meaning we arrived in Minneapolis 2 hours before we left Auckland..funny to think about. The last bit of our time in New Zealand was spent at a secluded island an hour east of Auckland called Waiheke Island. We spent 4 nights/5days doing a lot of R&R on the beach. The weather was a bit temperamental and it would rain ... read more
