Wednesday morning I left Auckland (& most of my luggage) & set off on the ferry to Waiheke Island, one of the many volcanic islands that dot the bay. Many people live on Waiheke & several commute to Auckland for work. I got a bus from the ferry terminal up to Hekerua Lodge in Oneroa (the main settlement on the island) & it turns out that whilst the dorms are packed no one is willing to cough up the few dollars extra for a share room of 3 so I had the room to myself which was kinda nice. That after noon I armed myself with a villafe map & a walks booklet & set off to explore Oneroa & its surrounds. From Little Oneroa Beach I went up the main street, cut down through Alison ... read more

Waiheke Island is a short ferry ride from downtown Auckland through the Hauraki Gulf … the ferries we saw docking, whilst waiting to embark, were full of both commuters and tourists making the most of the very early summer heat (this is really the tail-end of spring here). The water was a beautiful turquoise colour and we were surprised with how little pollution or scum there was, even at the dockside. As the catamaran sped away from shore the view of the towers and seafront provided a marvellous backdrop for the rest of the trip. In front of us several low-lying but undulating islands came into view … probably due to the volcanic nature of the region, they all had tight, lumpy hills on them. Thirty minutes later and we disembarked at Waiheke in the midday ... read more

Waiheke Island is full of laid back people and you can stay everywhere you want with your Van. Pure Freedom Camping :-). We traveled around the Island and camped at lovely Beaches and Bays. After 2 Days Aru is leaving Waiheke and the crazy German Community. After that i spend one more Week on Waiheke and left then to heading up to the Northland to met Garth (i met him on the Abel Tasman Trek) and Martin (one of the Hitchikers from Queenstown). Oh yah, and i extend me Visa to December. 6 Hour Action in the Immigration Office of Auckland - :-( ... read more

As my birthday was on the Monday, I celebrated it (properly) on the Friday. A big group of us met in a pub in the city after work. A typical Friday afternoon at work consists of a few drinks from 4pm so by the time I got in to town at 6pm I was well on my way!! I got a few nice little presents and a card from everyone. We ordered some food, (despite me trying to push the ‘eating is cheating’ motto!), but when it came I went to the toilet and kept bumping into people on the way back (including a couple of guys with a 2 litre tall ‘beer tower’ offering me to help myself) and by the time I made it back to the table, the food was gone and my ... read more

Geo: -36.7992, 175.1216th-17th May - Waiheke IslandThe 16th May is Alan's birthday and we celebrated it on Waiheke ("Cascading Waters"), one of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf east of Auckland. Its main claims to fame are its beautiful beaches and its vineyards and it is also a popular haunt of artists. We have rented a cottage for a couple of days so we could have a change of pace after all the travelling we've been doing. It is a 50 minute journey by car ferry from Auckland but seems a million miles away from the busy city. The main “town” is called Oneroa (Long Beach) and two of the other settlements are Blackpool and Ostend –I kid you not ! The sun shone for us today and so Alan spent his birthday on a lovely, secluded ... read more

For Christmas this year, we gave Liz and Allard a trip to Waiheke Island (pronounced why-heck-ee) including ferry and car hire after finding out that they haven't been there for well over 10 years. When Liz pointed out that you can get 4 people in a hire car and suggested we go along too, we naturally jumped at the chance! Waiheke is one of the few places left on our list of local destinations to visit for the first time and we were most definitely not disappointed! Liz and Allard picked us up at 8am and we drive up to the city, parked and headed for the 9.00am ferry. We made a beeline straight for the top deck and were afforded lovely views of Auckland's skyscraper skyline as we set sail, stopping briefly at Devonport before ... read more

I woke up at 9:20am and decided to hop in the shower since we had our own private bedroom, living room and bathroom in the exposed basement. The bathroom even had a towel warmer, nice. Pete then woke up when I returned to the room around 9:40am. We dressed and packed our bags so we would be ready. We didn’t hear anyone moving upstairs so I decided to work on the blog and Pete went up to the kitchen to start some coffee. Then around 10:30 everyone else started to wake up. Pete and Scott made an awesome breakfast with an egg scramble including onions, peppers, sausage and steak from last night. Then we had toast, blueberries and strawberries. Did I say how awesome the views are from this house with LOTS of windows to capture ... read more

So someone felt sorry for us being on our own for Christmas and hubby's colleague from work invited us to Waiheke Island for a day out! I love these days because again you get to go and do things that you probably would not do as just a tourist! Ferries at this time of year are pretty busy but thankfully they hold a lot more people than it looks. We were a bit worried at first as we were standing in a pretty long queue but it moved very quickly. Everyone was racing to sit upstairs or by a window and we were not so fussed and got ourselves a seat in the lower deck. The weather looked iffy in Auckland but I think that sun always seems to shine on Waiheke. What a difference being ... read more

Well our first small jaunt which got us out of Parnell and the City took us to Waiheke Island, a comfortable 35 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. My husband works with a professor who lives on the Island and he invited us for the day. We went late afternoon and did not know really what the plan for the afternoon was, unfortunately I did not take my camera as we were given a small but lovely tour of the island. We first went to the small community art gallery, small but pleasurable as it was exhibits from local artists and probably something we would not have done had we gone there just ourselves. The main aim for those visiting Waiheke appear to be * Beach * Wine * Restaurants Which of course is fair enough ... read more
