It is actually one of those days when we just did not happen to want to go the beach...OMG surprise yes it does happen! So I had heard from one of the girls at work that the botanic gardens were really beautiful and worth a visit. She has been fussy about a lot of things about being in New Zealand so I thought damn it must be good! So I said to hubby we have to find a day to go and this day was it. It was also not a very sunny day so we were not really missing a sunny day out at the beach anyway. I pack a blanket and our books just in case...in hindsight (don't you just hate hindsight, I mean you live and you learn right) I would not have because the gardens are huge and I was lugging this bag around with me which was thankfully not too heavy and we never really had the time after to just sit and relax or the weather for that matter. Though don't get me wrong it is a place you can go to to do just that! One thing we did notice was all the families that had come to spend the day there.

Hubby had the camera today and everywhere you turn there is a picture of a beautiful flower to take. So he was kept pretty busy which could account for the time taken to see everything. You do feel truly inspired while you are there and there is a bit of everything depending on what you are interested in seeing. Of course there are also lots of benches which tempt you to stop and sit for a moment to take in all your surroundings. We had an added bonus of viewing "Sculptures in the Gardens" which features 20 sculptures from top New Zealand artists. Some did not impress but some were really beautiful.

We went to the cafe for lunch and it was very busy but the food was actually surprisingly worth the wait. In the UK we are so used to grabbing ready made sandwiches and a bottle of something to drink that here it is refreshing for us to not have that option and be pushed to eat fresh salads or frittata's when we go out to places like this which possibly makes a huge difference to the experience for us. Actually at the end of the day we went back for coffee and cake!
