Vera and I hopped onto a ferry bright and early this morning to Rangitoto Island. It is Auckland’s youngest volcano and it last erupted 600 or 800 years ago, I can’t totally remember. There is nothing on the island and no permanent residence. Back in the early 1900’s people built small beach houses called Baches on the coast of the island but in 1930 it was decided that you could no longer build on the island. A few baches remain today and have stayed within families since the 1900’s and they still use the baches as vacation homes. We hiked up to the summit of the volcano which is at about 600 meters. It’s not a long hike but parts are quite steep and it’s really hot there because the trail and lots of the surroundings ... read more

I woke up at 08:25 but stayed in bed reading until about 08:50ish. I had a shower and got dressed, then had two pieces of toast with nutella for breakfast. At 11:20ish, Billy and I left the house to go to Devonport. We bought sandwiches and drinks from a bakery. We met Ranee at the ferry port and had to wait about 10 minutes to get the ferry across to Rangitoto Island. We found out on board that we couldn't buy tickets on the boat as we had a voucher for money off. The crew said that we would have to go all the way to Auckland City to pay for all of the tickets on the way back, but they also said that they would then pay for the ferry from Auckland City to Devonport. ... read more

Last week was Canterbury Show and Cup week and accordingly we got a provincial public holiday on the Friday for "Show day". The Royal New Zealand A&P Show took place over three days and was visited by Princess Anne. There was also a whole raft of events including big horse racing events including a harness racing day (which is very popular down under). Actually, we didn't take part in any of it, because Def Leppard were playing in Auckland - so we'd booked flights and hotel and got out of town as soon as we could. One has to get one's priorities straight! The flight afforded spectacular views of both South and North Island, and the highlight was clearly seeing the giant volcanoes in the Tongariro national park. We arrived on Friday afternoon, headed to Wendy's ... read more

Auckland is a city built on not one but over 50 volcanoes, all of which are blessedly dormant (but not extinct!). This lends the urban sprawl some fabulous features including a rolling landscape, plenty of big green spaces and a sense that you are never far away from nature's beauty. Just across the water from the CBD (Central Business District) where we live, stands the mysterious Rangitoto Island, Auckland's newest volcano at just 650 years old. Given that the ferry terminal is just a 20 minute walk away for us at the moment, we decided to treat Liz and Allard for a change and invited them to spend a day exploring the wonders of this distant nature reserve. Liz in particular jumped at the chance as she hasn't been for over 20 years! We caught the ... read more

Rangitoto island is visible from Auckland, and is a short ferry ride (about 20 minutes) from Auckland. It last erupted some 800 years ago, and the rock on the island is quite a bit lighter than you would expect due to the air bubbles locked in the rock. This was a pretty new experience to me. You could take some transport fairly high up the peak, but I and others chose to hike it. At the trailhead, it was noted that it would take about an hour to reach the summit. As I headed up and saw the summit in the distance, it didn't seem like I would be able to get there in an hour, but as it turns out, I think it was fairly accurate. I ended up spending about 2 hours and 45 ... read more

Hello, Crossing by ferry we arrived on Rangitoto Island for a hike to the top of the volcano, that rose out of the sea some 600 years ago. A walk uphill brings us to the top, 257 meters high. Lucky with the weatherconditions we discovered all the informationboards, reading about geology, history and nature of this new Island near Auckland.

With the departure of Jen last week and Sarah's rapidly approaching departure this Wednesday the number of my IEP group is dwindling quickly. I was organizing old emails today and found what I think was the first correspondence I received from Sarah more than a year ago, an invitation to her Halloween Party. From there we’ve seen a number of adventure (or misadventures, depending on who you ask); there was of course a couple Halloween parties, the most recent of which got me in trouble with another friend, the always unforgettable two week trek thru the south island, and etc….. Today, a group of Sarah’s friends took her out to Rangitoto Island for a hike to the summit and small picnic lunch. Despite the forecast for rain and a slight headache from the night before (Sony ... read more

Cloudy with occasional sunny intervals - warmish. Geological notes on Rangitoto Island in Fieldbook (July 2007 onwards) page 59. Waited for an earlier bus - it was late, so only just made the ferry at 9.15 (had to rush for water and food - there are no supplies on Rangitoto Island). There are only 1 morning and 1 midday ferry. The ferry was full of primary school kids on a summer term day trip. Short journey across the gulf - 25 minutes or so. I climbed up to the summit from the wharf - full of the kids, it could be a Cub hike (except that I don't have to be incharge). Scrubby trees in a'a lava to the sides. The path was gently climbing until it got close to the cone, and then climbed steeply ... read more

I got a solid 10+ hours of sleep last night and I felt amazing this morning! But now I am exhausted because Paul and I hicked about 5 hours today, straight just about to. My legs are incredibly sore and my feet hurt when I walk, but I will sleep well tonight. Paul and I took a ferry this morning to an Island called Rangitoto, which means Blood Red Sky in Maori. This is because the volcano that created the island erupted as recently as 600 years ago, and the Maori saw the eruption, it is assumed. I added some pictures so that you can see the beautiful island. The trails were pretty rough in parts because there was lava rock all over the place, but once we got near the summit the trails were dirt ... read more
