Lavender, Papes and the Pont by Mike What a wonderful piece of the world the south of France is. The countryside is beautiful. I’m reminded of a lot of the colours and light of paintings like Monet. I don’t know if this is where he did his painting but when you are driving down tree lined roads and sunlight is reflecting from the leaves in multiple patterns it certainly is nature making its own art. We travelled in the morning to Avignon – one of Tristin’s suggestions – and I can certainly see why. The history of the place goes back a millennia and you really felt a sense of history and historic change walking through. The historic part of the town is set within the walls of the old city so we started off at ... read more

Rome if you want to…by Mike While my lovely family will fill you in on the sights and sounds of these two fantastic cities (and I may to) there is always the other side to share. I guess our road trip started when we left Hotel Mariano. We dragged our suitcases to the train station to catch the Metro B to Laurentina. First timers looking confused… this young lady then came up and offered assistance. She lead us down the escalators – just beckoning along…Michelle should have clicked when someone yelled to her “be careful” as she went down the escalator but she was balancing her suitcase at the time and thought they might have been referring to that. At about this time I started thinking we might be being led down a blind corner to ... read more

Dubai - Michelle How to describe Dubai? Hot for a start! After great flights but only a few hours sleep we arrived in Dubai. With an outside temp of 38 degrees at 6am we made our way to our hotel. Unfortunately Friday and Saturday is the Dubai weekend and nothing opens before 10am so it was four hours of directionless wandering and time wasting before our adventure could properly begin. Now rather than narrate our time in Dubai chronologically I’m going to split it into what we did in Deira City (Old Dubai and where we stayed) and New Dubai. Deira City is what I would expect most Middle Eastern cities are like. It’s relatively poor and the shopping is functional with pretty basic malls. The people are quite conservative but for the most part dress ... read more

In twelve days our plane will be taking off from Auckland Airport bound for our great adventure! Mike's just picked up the last of the borrowed suitcases today so we are all ready to start packing our bags. Trips and transfers have been confirmed with the travel agent so down to the last minute things to organise before we go. Hopefully this test blog will work on our newly created blog space and friends and family will be able to track our travels along with us!... read more

We jetted off from Auckland to Christchurch on Saturday 17th March (after Joe fully satisfied his craving for MacDonalds chicken nuggets). Picked up our rental car and then went to explore Christchurch. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting the earthquake damage in Christchurch to be like, I certainly had no idea of the scale of the destruction - the whole city center is blocked off. We went to see the beautiful cathedral which is, tragically, being pulled down in a couple of weeks. However, despite the damage, we loved Christchurch. The current city center is made up of shops that have been put into brightly coloured shipping containers and the whole place had a real festival feeling about it. We camped the whole time we were travelling around the South Island (albeit we were ... read more

Didnt realise our last post was from Airlie Beach.. whoops. We had a great few weeks after that in Oz. Highlights included the Whitsundays (incredibly beautiful), walking in Port Douglas rain forest and scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef off of Cairns (we stroked a sea cucumber - it felt like a tongue). Then we flew out of Cairns to Auckland. We've been living on the North Shore for about four months now which has been great although we've spent most of the time working to get some funds for the next part of our trip. We've met some wonderful people and really loved living about 3 minutes from the beach. Swimming in the sea on Christmas day was pretty damn cool. Looking back, we've spent most days at work (Joe working as a door ... read more

Hello folks! Me (Anton) again I'm afraid, so you'll have to forgive the spelling mistakes, shortness and dullness of this blog... ;) As it was p-ing down in Nelson (supposedly the sunniest region in New Zealand), and after Kate had finished the previous blog-writing marathon, we decided to go to the cinema to watch 'Moneyball' with Brad Pitt (woo-hoo)! It was a good film and good value at $12 each and as much popcorn and coke as we could manage for $10 - result! Afterwards, we ran through the rain to 'Bertie' our campervan and headed to Hugh's flat. As we got nearer, we thought we saw Hugh walking home from work in the rain but as we weren't sure it was him we drove past. We knocked on his door but no answer... About 5 ... read more
