New Friends The ship is beginning to feel like a very small village. Faces are now familiar and I’m starting to pair the names and faces together. Yesterday at lunch I sat next to Len from …….. Bridgeport!. From the “can you bite off your nose to spite your face” notebook; Joy from Australia did not think she needed a visa for New Guinea, cost in Australia, $25. The government changed the rules and she was required to get one on board at a cost of $104. She took umbrage at this rip off and decided to leave the cruise at New Caledonia and fly home to Australia at a cost of over $1,000 and leaving her friend behind. Standing on principle is fine but I would have chosen a more important and less costly principle. ... read more

Wednesday, March 5, 2008 Today is another sea day as we are about half way to Noumea. The calendar of events is packed. We began our day by attending the lecture on Noumea. Now know what to do, and not do; what to see, and not see. After the Noumea lecture we had the next Explorations Speakers Series lecture. This time it was by a Colonel David Horner - Australia’s military historian. He has an incredible resume as a student, professor, veteran, author/editor (26 books), and consultant to TV programs. His talk was titled, “War Comes to Paradise Japan Strikes!” Basically his talk was on the planning to attack Pearl Harbor. From this talk I went to play the game “Lost at Sea” where you are in the lifeboat and have 15 things and you must ... read more

The first Sea Day. Today was our first full day at sea and there was just too much to do. Enjoyed breakfast at 7:00, then finished yesterdays blog and welcomed the sunshine, our first since last Friday. Then it was a little ironing. The first of our WWII lectures provided the background for war in the Pacific. The lecturers are military historians well versed in both sides of the conflict. Next I joined the Cruise Critics Meet and Greet. Unlike past M&G, where champagne or coffee and tea and cookies were served and the members interacted, this was more of a Q&A with the Hotel Director, the Culinary Supervisor and the head of Guest Services on the grill. Instead mingling, the time was spent criticizing everything from the boarding process to pancakes at breakfast. Single and ... read more

The Nobregas are off to sea ... a new experience to add to our travel adventures!!! A 10 day cruise on the "Pacific Dawn" sailing to 4 ports of call around the south pacific region. Anticipation was high, we've heard a lot about it! Couldn't wait to get into that mile of food... As you all know on any cruise, anything and everything is available in on stop shop! and we weren't disappointed in that aspect...! A brouchure tells a million stories though, as we know things don't always go to plan as in our case. 2 days into it, captain makes an official annoucement that we are sailing into a fierce cyclone....! Itenerary out the window and our adventure became a "mystery cruise'... We didn't know where we wer going to end up everyday, weather ... read more

Our excitement of getting to visit New Caledonia dampened a bit when we started researching how much it costs to stay there! Definitely it has imported prices as well as the language from France, and thats a real shame for backpackers. Új-Kaledónia látogatása iránt érzett lelkesedésünket kissé lehűtötte mikor rájöttünk, hogy milyen sokba is fog ez nekünk kerülni. Nemcsak a nyelvet, de az árakat is importálták Franciaországból. With only a short time available we opted to visit the most talked about location in New Caledonia, the remote island of L’lle des Pins (Isle of Pines). The only way to get there is by ferry which runs only 3 days a week, making the island paradise feel very isolated. We had a fun journey as the cyclone that had affected us in Fiji had passed nearby and ... read more

We arrived in Nouméa early in the morning following an Australian theme night party. Some of us dressed up - thanks to having found a "pound" shop in Cairns, but there was limited scope for anything other than Bruce and Sheila, the outback bush rangers or the painted native with associated croc/didgeridoo. Still, it was fun (picture attached). Nouméa is the largest city in the French Special Collectivity of New Caledonia. It is located on a peninsula in the south of New Caledonia's main island which is called Grande Terre. The population of the island consists of European, Polynesian, Indonesians and Vietnamese as well as many Melanesians who find work in Nouméa which is one of the South Pacific's most industrialized cities. It lies on a protected deep water harbour that forms the chief port of ... read more

As you can see in the summer of 2007 I went to New Caledonia. The flight to Noumea was very long. It took me 30 hours of flying to get to Noumea. I had a flight Ljubljana-Paris-Tokyo-Noumea with Air France. If you come from EU, you don’t need any visa requirements. Well in Noumea I was staying at the YHA. I really recommend this hostel. It is actually the only hostel in New Caledonia. It is save, clean and full of travelers. It is located in the centre of Noumea, on the hill, with a great view of Noumea. Well I stayed there for 5 nights. During these 5 nights I made a plan for Noumea (what to see, where to go etc.). I was surprised by the knowledge of English language in Noumea. Not a ... read more

2 blogs in 2 weeks I hear you say! Well nearly at the end of our 2 weeks here and where has that time gone. Once we landed in New Caledonia we were greated by Ben, Nathalie and Sam who took us back to Noumea a 50km drive. Once we arrived we were welcome into their apartment where we made ourself at home for the next two weeks. After a couple of days rest we decided to head south to and Island called the Isle of Pines known as 'the closest island to paradise'. We took a catamaran to the island which took 2.5hrs and you could say it was a little bit rough. We camped on the isle of pines at a place called Nataiwatch for 2 nights. While on the Isle of Pines we ... read more

We left you in Hervy Bay, from where we moved onto Brisbane! Brisbane is a really nice city, its not too big or busy and is well looked after. We stayed at a really nice hostel called Bowen Terrace, it was more like staying in a big house than in a hostel. You can get around the city using the city cat, which as it sounds isn't a large feline, but a catameran that cruises up and down the river in the centre of the city! We decided to take a trip to Australia Zoo, home of the late Steve Irwin. We encountered lots of animals, from mini crocodiles to the largest you could ever imagine, to circus rescued elephants, bengal tigers, wombats, turtles, dingoes and of course lots of Koalas, we even got to cuddle ... read more

As we arrived the sun was shining! We were happy to see that! The French established a settlement here in 1854. The area first served as a prison colony from 1864 to 1904, and then as a center for the nickel and gold that was mined nearby. Later it served as the headquarters of the U.S. military in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, the U.S. military ... read more
