Rachel... read more

Jérôme... read more

Our next stop after French Polynesia was the Kingdom of Tonga. From there we we suppose to travel to Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, unfortunately the Cook Islands were being hammered by a hurricane, so the Captain wisely decided to take a long detour and sail directly to Vavau Tonga. I did discover one thing in the 31/2 days at sea and that is that Mare has a stronger stomach than I do. If one wishes to visit an island in the South Pacific that is still under developed with regard to the tourist trade, I would recommend Tonga. Another day at sea and then we arrived at Savusavu Fijii. The next day we were in Savu Fijii. New Caladonia was a surprise. It is the third largest producer of nickel and obviously a good portion ... read more

Saturday we were in Fiji, our first island which geologically was once part of a continent. The previous ones were formed out of the ocean by volcanoes or coral reefs. Fiji was very hilly and lush and hot. The people are much darker skinned and have crinkley hair compared with the Polynesians of the earlier islands. Mom stayed on the ship, but I decided to go in to the town, Suva. We had been warned that there were a lot of con artists and pick pockets who loved to prey on cruiseship passengers. I took a shuttlebus to the main shopping area where I actually bought some things! (For those who don't know this, I hate to shop.) Fiji is famous for brightly patterned cotton shirts. I ran into another woman from the ship and we ... read more

Feb 14 2009 So apparently I’m not very good at blogging, its been about 2 months since I last wrote something so here goes nothing. Well I’m now officially 25, thank you everyone for the birthday wishes. I got really drunk and had a blast, I even got pulled up on stage for a special dance, from the dance team here, there is a video floating around I’m sure at some point I’ll put it up on youtube. So after a night of drink and celebrating I paid for it on Christmas day. I had to get up and video tape kids making cookies at 11am having gone to bed a 5am. And all I wanted to do was eat the cookies the kids were making. Seriously you should have seen how good they were, M&M, ... read more

Fiji Another day at sea but fortunately the seas had calmed down a bit. Our next stop was Savusavu Fiji. As the ship approaches you pass a number of smaller islands and enter a lager bay. We took a cab ride around part of the island with one stop being where there was boiling water bubbling up from the ground. A woman was there cooking chicken in a pot, then back to town and a brief stop in an open restaurant/bar to listen to a very good singer. Our next stop was Suva, which is the capital of Fiji, and a chance to wander around the city, which was interesting. One see’s all kinds of people ranging from the typical tourist to women fully covered in black bukas with only the eyes showing. After a couple ... read more

EN FRANCAIS PLUS BAS MORE PHOTOS HERE As soon as we set foot in Jean's place in Noumea, we were off again to party. Jean's girlfriend is a couples dancing aficionada and we hopped all evening from rock'n roll to swing, salsa, waltz, tango and whatever else, genuinely undisturbed by our total ignorance of the conventional steps, and fully enjoying making total fools of ourselves on the dance floor. Sunday was as the Lord had intended it to be: a day for resting, napping, uploading photos, eating croissants at 3pm and doing nothing. Well, yes, we did pack for the mystery trip to a mystery island that Chris had arranged, and quite efficiently at that: 7 bags of all sizes for 3 days and 2 people (for the record, I travel for one year with one ... read more

Thursday, March 06, 2008 Today we were in Noumea, New Caledonia. We docked about 7:00am and it did take awhile for the ship to be cleared by immigration. We had not chosen a shore excursion as we had at one time thought about doing a scuba dive trip. When I got burned on my leg I knew I did not want to put it in salt water and it is a good thing we decided not to go because the weather was overcast, with just a few sprinkles. The weather had been overcast here for about 3 weeks - they said they had horrible weather - and so the water was probably pretty cloudy, so visibility would be low. We got off the ship and wandered around the town but we had wanted to go ... read more
