Looking back at the Fiji Islands weeks ago, I realize that the Fiji islands were closer to paradise than I have ever been. Everything from the turquoise and crystal clear water to the numerous islands which looked like small plots of lush green volcanic land made me feel like I had entered Never Neverland . Rachel and I took a five hour ferry to the farthest island, Nacula, in the Yasawas. We stayed at a resort right across from the Blue Lagoon Island, where the movie The Blue Lagoon was filmed. Nacula looked exactly like the island did in the Blue Lagoon, there were hermit crabs all over the beach, papaya, coconut and banana trees everywhere and mountains and tropical forests inland. Although I got an ear infection from the rain pelting against my head ... read more

It was so tough being in Sydney that Orla and I decided we needed a week in Fiji, so we duly flew to Nadi with no plans and no place to stay and hoped that we would have a Pacific adventure. We were not far wrong with all sorts of wrangling and comedy of errors including missing boats, seasickness (not us, thank goodness!), torrential Pacific downpours and being ripped off by (probably) well-meaning, but unclear, travel agents. However, it was all part of enjoying "Fiji time" i.e. being so laid back we were horizontal and you couldn't help but have a great time on these beautiful islands: Treasure Island, Musket Cove on Malololailai, and Sonaisali. We felt almost like the Famous Five given the names but didn't think that George, Anne, Julian, Dick and Timmy the ... read more

Bula! (That’s Fijian for welcome don’t you know) Admittedly we are playing catch-up a little here as a it was a few weeks since we were there but time for a little round-up of our third and final Pacific Island Adventure. Our first night in Fiji was spent sleeping at Nadi airport because our flight from the Cook Islands arrived at silly o'clock in the morning - don’t they all? - This was not a problem however as the tourist information at Suva airport is one of the best that we have come across, loads of information and friendly staff and best of all a number of comfy sofas on which to sleep until your bus/ferry/plane leaves. One of our fellow vagrants was a Planning lecturer from Australia who ended up giving Tom some business contacts ... read more

Two weeks of sun, sea, sand, boats, more boats, red sunsets and loads of snorkeling. Fiji looks just as you see it in all the travel ads and brochures. Azure sea, white sand, palm trees, volcanic landscapes, green hills and beautiful coral reefs. Our flight to Fiji was an easy 3 hours from Auckland, and we were ushered to our hotel - Nadi Bay Hotel - a few kms from the airport, where we had just enough time to dump our bags and join in a traditional kava ceremony. We had no idea we would get to taste the famous kava within an hour of landing in Fiji. Kava is ground from the root of a plant related to the pepper tree and mixed with water, so you can imagine what it tastes like - it ... read more

Hi Everybody. I just got to Auckland, but i thought Id write a bit about Fiji first, and finally stick some dam photos up there, actually no wait, I can put up pictures of the Cook Islands, but they are all pretty much the same thing, Palm trees/sand/alcohol. Fiji was cool, nothing what so ever to do, sat on an island, amazingly I still managed to cut my foot open on some coral, I am seriously rethinking jumping out of a plane if I can get hurt so much on the ground! There really was nothing to do on fiji tho, and everyone runs on Fiji time, which basically means late, so you spend a lot of time sitting around. Got a hell of a tan now tho. Heres a couple of pictures from the Cook ... read more

We landed in Fiji after what seemed to be a lifetime, but was actually 29.5 hours from beginning to end. The beginning being New York City and the end, a small island, in the Yasawa Islands of Fiji. The last leg of the trip was the most eventful. We rode in a small boat through the crystal clear turquoise/jade waters of the South Pacific, into a torrential, truly South Pacific monsoon rainstorm. After being bounced up and down on the wooden bench seats through what seemed like, through my sleep deprived eyes, 20 foot tsunami waves,we luckily arrived in one piece to Nacula Island. We were warmly greeted with huge smiles shouting "Bula!" which means hello. My five days on the island were filled with nothing but pure relaxation. My hang out spot was the hammock ... read more

Well Fiji was fantastic for us and as I'm sure everyone knows by now its where we got engaged!! Absolutely thrilled and very excited. It was all very romantic indeed. We went on a 2 day cruise to "Tivua Island" on Valentines Day and we were the only people staying on the island (apart from the chef & 2 caretakers). It was a true paradise. So peaceful, never experienced anything quite like it. The island was small and beautiful. It would only take you about 5 minutes to walk around it. The island is surrounded by 500 acres of tropical coral. Very pretty. We stayed in a "bure" which looked out onto the ocean. I swear, the beach & ocean were our front garden. We had a little front deck which was a lovely place to ... read more

Unfortunately it's time to leave this paradise island. We sit waiting for the boat which listening to the dancers rehearsing in the building next to us. Our suncream has run out so we sit in the shade, but still get burnt! The return journey was quicker and smoother so no sickly stomach this time. Pizza for dinner, yum. The food at Horizon Beach backpacker's is very good.... read more

Woke up when the fan goes off and had breakfast. Went on a short walk through the village on the island. This is a good place because the locals are friendly and you can wander through their backyards and chat with them. There is no 'them-and-us' which exists on some other islands, despite the obvious poverty in which some of them live. A far cry from the luxury resort next door where those with too much money are spending 250 pounds a night(!) for exactly the same view. It really is too hot for much midday walking so we head back for lunch and stay in the shade until later where we walked across the island (in 10 minutes) to a remote beach with only us there, and did a bit of snorkeling in the clear ... read more
