The flight from LA to Fiji is as long as from London to LA, so arriving at 3 in the morning having crossed the international date line we were a wee bit weary. We had to wait for 4 hours for the connecting shuttle bus to take us to our accomodation and despite the seating in the arrival lounge not being the most comfortable I still managed to catch some shut eye, while Sara caught up on her crosswords (Esther you would be proud!). Even at the planning stage of this trip we had decided that Fiji was always going to be a rest stop after the past 3 months of travelling non stop (its harder work than you think!!). Everything went according to plan and the most energy we expended was getting in and out ... read more

No pics until NZ- no usb ports on these old computers! Opened my eyes this morning and heards the birds tweeting...had a fleeting moment where i thought it was a sunny day- then i looked outside- MORE RAIN! doh I have found plenty of activities to keep me busy, raining or not...and this hostel is amazing. It is set in a very lush, tropical environment- trees & flowers everywhere. NICE! The huge frog that hopped into the bathroom last night and stared at me was a little scary- but hey part of the Fiji experience. I get new roomates tonight- the australian couple i was staying with are leaving today. I am going to the local village church service at 10:00 am to get a little religion in my life and i have a massage (outdoor, ... read more

After almost two weeks of beach life we decided to take a trip to see something of note. The hostel was running a small tour to a local village so we could see how 'real' Fijians live. The village was situated about 25kms inland from the coral coast. Nine of us piled into a truck facing each other and we set of for the bumpy journey. The truck had two uncomfortable wooden benches to sit on and a linoleum roof, at least there was plenty of air flowing through. The road was good for about 5 mins, then we started to climb a steep red mud path through the forrest. There were some amazing views along the road and we stopped for a photo opportunity. About 15kms into the drive our truck got stuck in the ... read more

We've been here a week and done very little, we go to sleep about 9pm as the sun wakes us up at 6am, we've been lying on the beach every day and swimming in the sea, it's been great to relax and catch up with some reading. The food has been good and the weather even better, it rains every day but only for about 10 minutes or so but boy does it come down however 10 minutes later you would have no idea that it had been wet. We took a bus to the Capital, Suva, one day and that wasn't nice, so hot and smoggy with loads of people begging and dodgy people following us, not much fun. We need to do more next week though as we're starting to twiddle our thumbs after ... read more

We actually arrived yesterday (Friday) but didn't want to add to the already huge post. This is where the diarised journals stop and the interesting only stuff appears, we'll keep it updated as much as we can and will include photo's as and when we can. We arrived at Nadi (Nan-dee) International Airport around 1pm, it was a 3 hour flight from Auckland and we gained an hour too, we're now 12 hours ahead of GMT. The heat instantly struck us, it had just stopped raining and the humidity was as hot as I've ever felt, it was only 25 degrees but felt about 35+. We've arrived in the hot and wet season, the other being warm and dry, it averages about 29 at this time of year with a humidity factor that is in to ... read more

Checked out of the beachouse at before 8 30 and waited for the experience bus to pick us up. Said goodbye to Nathan and Beccy (they were staying at the Beechouse for a few more days) and set off for the hike through the jungle. The bus couldnt take us all the way to the start of the hike so we all had to jump on a tiny van. Not enough room for us all so we were sat on the floor drivin on a very bumby dirt track towards the jungle. We got off the little van and met the guide 'Sulu'. We had been told to wear really sturdy footwear but Sulu was hiking in his flip flops!!!It was hard to look at the scenery around us because as soon as you looked up ... read more

Vanja, Claire and I went to find some sunshine. The leaflet for Robinson Crusoe Island looked pretty good so I phoned. To get out to Robinson Crusoe Island, or Likura Island as its really called, we had to catch a bus to a police station in the middle of no where. The middle of no where was between Suva and Nadi, on the coral coast. Called Vatu Dradra (pronounced Vatu drandra), or translated, "red stone". Waiting for the bus a truck stopped and the driver said he would take us there for $4 Fiji each, a little less than the bus and a lot quicker. So we took the ride, chatted with the driver, lives in Suva in his sister's house and drives from one side of the island to the other most days. True to ... read more

I've always wanted to go to Fiji. Just the name summons up images of pristine white sandy beaches, cocconut palm trees and lazy days just swinging in a hammock. My first recollection of hearing about Fiji was in the British Sci-Fi Comedy "Red Dwarf" - Dave Lister was saving to go to Fiji, whilst working a dead end job on an interstellar mining ship. The theme tune of the program incorporates all sorts of references to the Fiji trips... lyrics here: It's cold outside, there's no kind of atmosphere I'm all alone, more or less Let me fly, far away from here Fun, fun, fun, in the sun, sun, sun... I want to lie shipwrecked and comatose Drinking fresh mango juice Goldfish shoals, nibbling at my toes Fun, fun, fun, in the sun, sun, sun... Fun, ... read more
