it was great to see stacey and collette, a nice reminder of home BULA!!!
thats hello in fijian. Well what a journey so far here in Fiji!!! We've had possibly the worst week of rain iv ever experienced, yet its still been sooooo great. We had a nice last week with darren and kate in sydney, and had the great experience of meeting up with stacey herbert in sydney too. Stacey had just moved over for a year with her friend collette, so we all met at the harbor and had a nice drink and a huge catch up. it was so nice to see some friendly faces from home, and to hear the good old devonshire accent.
The flight was fine, as always, and we had 2 nights booked in nadi, just ten mins from the airport. We woke to clear blue skies on our first full day here, and just chilled out and sat by the pool all day. We had been saying for the last month in oz, that we can't wait to just kick back and chill in the sun, so thats what we did. the accomadation was basic but the food was great, so we were happy. In the evening we went across to another backpackers to
watch a traditional fijian dance and fire show, and have a few beers of course. beer is cheap here, so thats always a tempter!!!! after 2 days in nadi we headed south to the coral coast and to some accomodation known as "the beachhouse". it was actually used in celebrity love island,on ITV, so we thought it must be cool. When we arrived it was as good as we'd hoped. really clean, nice and big rooms, with a nice pool area, and about 80 other 20 to 30 year old backpackers. we were so excited, the first night, and had a real nice evening with a canadian couple. We talked for hours and ended up not going to bed until 2am. The place had a really relaxed vibe, and it was nice as the seating area forced everyone to socialise. we ate dinner with different people each night, and every afternoon at 4pm, we all had free scones and tea, and again all mingled and made friends etc. Does it get more english?????? We also had a traditional Kava ceremony on our second night. Its a tradition of welcoming, used by each community for new geusts, and is basically a
plant root, mixed in some water. It has an effect on the body if you drink enough, like alcohol, but it tasted really rancid, it was like drinking chalk. But it was nice to be involved in the ceremony, and was good fun. Everyone had to drink a bowl of the liquid, and soph was about the 8th person to drink. The first 7 people drank it with ease, so i thought "it can't be too bad", until it came to sophies turn!!!! She nearly threw up all over the floor, and everyone was laughing at her reaction, ha ha ha. Tradition is that no one can leave until the big bowl is empty, so when it came to the second helping, the cheif selected a few to have a second cup. Me and few lads had seconds, and the fijian man decided to pick on soph and make her do another cup, much to our amusment, but not hers!!!!
The next day was nice and sunny and we laid out on the sun loungers and relaxed all day. until the evening when it came in all cloudy and then started to P**s down. It did then not stop
for 5 days, so we said enough was enough and decided to leave that place a day early and come up to nadi to stay an extra night. And huray, today was sunny, but i am burnt a bit!!!!!!!!!!!! oooppppssss. You do not realise how many layers of cream you need to put on!!! But over all the beachhouse was really great, and because of the rain we just chilled and meet loads of people. We met a great couple from newquay, and got on really well, and will all hopefully be going for a surf when we get back home, and we also met some top lads from hornchurch where my cousins live, small world hey. We also did things like coconut jewellery making, killer pool, all to pass the time, and oh yeah, lots of drinking!!!!!!
So , we are both very excited to be heading out to the islands tomorrow, we have done a package where we stay on two islands for 4 nights and have 5 full days there. hopefully the weather will be good, by all accounts on the forcast it should be!! we are staying on beachcomber island (the party island) and then
manta ray island. both full of backpackers i think. it has been really nice meeting lots of people lately and will be nice to do some more. The islands are true paradise, with picture perfect golden sands and clear blue water, so paradise here we come. no trip to fiji is complete without going to the islands (Yasawas).
we're so excited for hawaii too. just spoke to my mum and have made plans to meet on the first day at their hotel, as we arrive really early the day after them. so just a quick blog this time before we hit the islands tomo. love to everyone.
PS the pizza photo is the dinner we had 30mins ago, and we can barely walk after eating that thing!!!!
PS.2 Congatulations to Nat and steve on their wedding tomorrow, hope you have a superb day.
