Mon 12th The flight was ok as I did sleep most of it, well on and off. We arrived at Rau's guest house, which it did not look anything like the photos from the internet, as we were explaining to the driver that this is not what we expected a lady turned up and said we should be at the beach resort with the family. We got to the guest house and the family who own the house were i there with the grandparents, children, brothres etc although they made us feel very welcome the grandmother said to use ' well i hope you don't mind kids crying in the night and children fighting'. We knew that there was a dispute about the house, the family have taken it back and don't want to rent it ... read more

No I did not get to live a whole year in Rarotonga (oh how I am dreaming now) we celebrated one whole year of marriage there. We have just got back from a beautiful extra long weekend, an extra long weekend that just was not long enough. Packing list T-shirt Shorts Swimsuit Suntan lotion Sunglasses Insect repellent (they have some pretty big beasts) Raincoat/umbrella (it will rain at some point!) KIA ORANA It started with a warm welcome on arrival at the airport. It starts with a local gentleman singing while you go through customs. We were dutifully pointed to the transport to get to our hotel where you are given the traditional lei, garland of flowers around your neck. The driver tells you a bit about the town as you drive through and so you ... read more

A second visit to any destination is always a bit of a decider. Will it now become embedded in the travel itinerary or will it quietly slip from the agenda as a ‘yeah, we liked it but…” Our current feeling is that Rarotonga is now dangerously close to earning its embedded stature. A few clarifications required here; We haven’t been to Aitutaki even though everyone says we should - more beautiful, even better beaches, more peaceful etc. But who needs another flight? We haven’t been to Samoa. Many people say you’re not missing much. Others say you’re missing the real Pacific. We have been to Fiji but not for many years. Through the growing years of Olivia and Ted Fiji was the embedded Pacific destination for the Thorps. But now we don’t need nannies, kids clubs, ... read more

Raratonga To conclude of our round the world trip, we decide to treat ourselves to some relaxation before returning to the world trip. The Cook Islands are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean are a long long way from the UK, so we are unlikely to visit them again so took nine days to experience the Islander’s lifestyle in full. We arrived at Raratonga airport to find an old guy in a Hawaiian shirt (well I guess it’s and Islander thing) playing a guitar and singing tropical, Polynesian songs to us as we queued for customs and to collect our bags. I had already found and booked a well recommended guesthouse on Trip Advisor called Aremango, all the reviews had raved about it and it was only thirty quid a night for a kingsize room ... read more

Having failed to rid ourselves of the hangover that dogged us throughout Easter Sunday, following Dave & Char's wedding we settled into the excellent Air NZ flight early evening and vegetated throughout the flight drinking beer and watching Avatar. We were looking worse in Rarotonga than when we took off and slumped into bed for some much needed recuperation. When we woke up, it was Easter Sunday and neither of us had a headache. The Internatinal Dateline is the greatest hangover cure ever, you get to have another try at the same day. Unfortunately, there is nothing to do in Rarotonga on a Sunday, let alone Easter Sunday. Easter Monday offered little more. It's funny how the societies which introduced hellfire and eternal damnation to the pagans in the Pacific Islands now have 24 hour lifestyles ... read more

Going around the world, means you will have to cross the Pacific Ocean at some point. You can fly all the way to the US in one flight, but why not make a stopover on one of the many amazing islands that are dotted around in the pacific? Certainly a good idea! One of those island groups is The Cook Islands. Named after captain James Cook, it's a group of 15 small islands with a population of about 20.000. The main island is Rarotonga and it has an international airport with flights from New Zealand and a weekly direct flight to Los Angeles. So "the Cooks" was a perfect stop on the way to the Americas for me! I visited two islands, Rarotonga (the main island) and Aitutaki, a one hour flight away. Everything slows down ... read more

From Rarotonga, I took a 4-day break to Aitutaki, a group of small islands in a fantastic paradise lagoon. It's a 50 minute flight in a tiny 15-seater airplane with amazing views of the islands and the lagoon. Unfortunately for Aitutaki, it was hit by a cyclone about 2 months ago, destroying a lot of nature and houses on the island. Luckily, most of all the businesses were back up and running again, and the islands were still beautiful to visit. The lagoon was not damaged. I stayed with Gina, a local "queen" who has a four lodge garden. Officially, she really is a queen, although the meaning is somewhat different I think. She didn't really have a court or anything, but she was a queen after all! I was the only one staying at her ... read more

Warning: The pictures might be a bit repetitive, but I simply just can't get enough of beautiful beaches. Although I tried to capture the beauty of the Cooks Islands with my photos, it is an impossible task, as in reality they are even much more stunning. Get a glimpse of paradise by clicking on the first picture to enlarge it and browse through them all Cooks Islands - Islands of Desire As most ATW travelers have a stay-over at Fiji and we haven't heard many positive stories about this holiday destination, we decide to go to the Cook islands instead. We stay one week on the main island & capital Rarotonga and one week on Aitutaki, a very small island surrounded by one of the world's most beautiful lagoons. The stay on the islands marks the ... read more

Täälläkin on kaikkien kirkkokuntien kirkot edustettuina. Puhuttelutapa on jällee... read more

NEW ZEALAND 1 NIGHTER We had a lovely one night two day stop in Pukekoke, South Auckland, staying with my godmother Jenny, her husband Terry and their son Craig before flying onto Rarotonga. Terry picked us up from our flight from Buenos Aires and we were immediately taken with the lovely scenery even though we were a bit dazed and confused from our flight. Terry took us back to Craig's house and we spent the day washing, sleeping and eating nice food!! Jenny came home after she'd finished at school and it was so great to see her, my main memories of her are of a visit she made with Craig, Scott and Sarah to England years and years ago when she taught my Mum how to make Lasagne for which I will be forever ... read more
