Monday 5th March:
Luckily the forecasters got it wrong again today as we have had wall to wall sunshine
all day long. We had plans for all sorts of weather but kicked straight into the day
with great weather activities and, as on so much of this holiday, we headed up the
nearest tall building. In Sydney that meant going up the Sydney Tower. At 1,014 feet
it's a bit lower than the Sky Tower we climbed in Auckland but it's still a blinkin'
long way up. The visibility was magnificent and it was decidedly odd watching
aeroplanes flying into Sydney airport next to Botany Bay ... and below where you're
standing! Before going up the tower (in a slow and way too clackety lift) they put on a
4D film showing some of Sydney's highlights. I had no idea what 4D was until it got
going and it involved having water sprayed on us when the film showed all things aquatic
and having a wind directed at us when anything aerial was going on. It was good fun.
After that, we made great use of our travel cards. Until today we hadn't been on a
train. At the end of today, we've been on 4 of them! We took the train to the edge of
the travel zone just to take a look at the country. We got out at the end and had a
look around a normal suburb of the city rather than the glitzy tourist areas. Then we
took the Sydney tram and again went to the end of the line. Along the way we kept an
eye out for a good place to explore and, taking the advice of one of our Mah-Jong
playing pals, stopped at the Sydney Fish Market. It's a bit like a smaller version of
Billingsgate - just as smelly though and loads more restaurants on site. The choice of
fish was stunning, especially the shellfish, and we ended up sharing a fish platter for
lunch and treating ourselves to a lobster and king prawn combo for dinner tonight. A
whole lobster, 5 huge prawns and some salad for about £14. Eating out is seriously
expensive here in Sydney but sitting down to lobster at home was positively cheap!! And
scrumptious too.
It's been so hot today that we got back to the apartment and went for another lovely
swim and once again had the whole pool and spa to ourselves. That really does feel very
indulgent.
Tomorrow we're meeting up with one of my sister's friends who moved, about 6 years ago,
to a district a short distance out of Sydney. She's chuffed to get the chance to come
and take a look inside these swanky apartments and we're chuffed to meet up with a mate
from back home. Could be an awful lot of talking going on in the morning!
