Hi there everyone!
We last left you in Durban where we spent a few days before jumping on a bus to Jo'Burg. Well it wasn't a very good bus at all and broke down 1 hour into the 9 hour trip! After spending many hours on the side of the road with a few passengers freaking out about getting robbed and shot, a new bus came and we finally made it with all our stuff and no injuries! Not much to say about Jo'Burg except the Apartheid museum was awesome and it was great catching up with our fellow truckies for the last time. We almost missed our plane to Oz, that bloody travel curse is kicking in again, but managed to get to the airport on time after getting done over AGAIN for taxi fare. 9 hours later we landed into the beautiful Perth!!!
Meeting us there was my friend from London (Sarah), her dad, who waited patiently for us to come out of customs. Sarah had said "look for a blonde girl with a guy, don't worry dad they'll have massive backpacks...you can't miss them!" Unfortunately our packs were in a trolley and Waz had already frightened another
Scott, Jaz, Waz and the infamous lemon tree!
Flies got a bit annoying, so out came the fly veils. blonde girl bowling up to her so was too scared to approach us! But we got there in the end. The next week was spent in Sarah's wee country town called Narembeen, about 3 hours east of Perth. Now for those of you who know me well, I am not exactly the country kind of girl.......but I think I took to it like a duck to water and am trying to convince Scott to get into wheat farming just so I can drive the header!!!
We had such an awesome time staying on the farm. Jane and Wayne (Sarah's parents) are the coolest cats ever and always doing something, the social life in Narembeen definitely rivals that of London! Scott was able to get out on the farm and finally get his hands dirty while I hung with Jaz. Melbourne Cup Day was a major highlight with Jaz and I heading to the Narembeen club about 11am and having Champagne all day. Loads of ladies had on their facinators and I thought it was only fair to get into the spirit of things and place a few bets on some horses. I was so sure I was going to
The Big Chomper!
Harvest Time and we had a ride in it. win but no such luck 😞
Wayne also is partner in a salt lake, so it was time to bag loads of the salt into 25kg and 50kg bags. This is where Scott and I came in. After the original setback of me unsuccessfully you could say, not putting the bag on the machine properly, salt came pouring out of the machine everywhere!! I was panicking and Wayne was trying to correct the situation, meanwhile salt is gathering all over my feet and the floor! I thought I was going to get the sack for sure. But Waz had faith in me and I eventually mastered it and became a pretty good salt bagger I reckon!! Meanwhile Scott was roaring it up on the forklift and packaging the finished tonnes.
After a week on the farm it was time to say a sad goodbye to Waz and Jaz and head into Perth. There we stayed with Sarah's sister Emily, who took us to all the touristy sights in Perth. It really is a beautiful city with loads of gorgeous beaches and cool pubs. We had lunch and drinks at the Obie in Cottesloe and spent a really nice day
wandering around Freemantle. Perth is definitely a place we will go back to.
Next we went and stayed with Scott's aunty and uncle in Mandurah. Mandurah is kind of like a holiday town where lots of people from the city head to in their holidays. The houses there are unbelievable and canals have been built throughout the town so that people can rock up in their boats and park them right outside their houses!! It was awesome catching up with Scott's aunty Jillian and uncle Trevor, and we had a relaxing few days wandering around, going to cafes and generally chilling out.
Next it was time to head to Sydney to hang out with my cousin Tony. We have been here for almost 10 days now and the weather has been fantastic! We have done the usual Sydney things, going to Darling Harbour, the Rocks, seeing the Sydney Opera House etc. I was stoked to catch up with my sister for lunch before she headed on to Asia for her O.E. Spent a few hours at Bronte beach over the weekend lapping up the sun and surf before returning to New Zealand's arctic climate for Christmas. We went to
Bobtails
These wandered around the backyard, but couldn't swim very well! Centennial Park and watched 'A Misummer Nights Dream' as the sun was setting. It was fantastic performance and Scott was even able to follow along Shakespeare's story line. The remainder of our time here has been spent by the pool.
Hope everyone is well. Looking forward to catching up with many in NZ when we get in next week.
