Nothing really beats the feeling you get when you start a road trip with your friends and family. People always say that the journey itself is sometimes more important than the finish line, and in this case it is more than true. However, road trips can easily become a logistical nightmare if you run into technical issues or just fall victim to the demons of bad organisation. In order to help you avoid such situations, we are going to share the tips we got from experienced drivers.
Be prepared before you leave
Nothing is as important as being actually ready for a ride that’s going to take days. This means that you need to be a 100%!s(MISSING)ure that your car is working like a clock and capable of pulling off such a feat without trouble. You can check most of the things yourself - in fact, if something is not working right, you’ll probably already known. Still, it doesn’t hurt to check the tyres and change them if they are too worn out to go for hundreds or thousands of miles. Make sure that the wipers are in good condition as well, because you never know what kind
of weather you might run into. Checking if all the lights are working properly is also a must before you head out. Obviously, these are all minor checks, but necessary ones before venturing out on the road for days or weeks.
Keep things running smoothly
There’s nothing complicated about making your car work smoothly as you are driving across the country. Just keep your eye on the basics - the rule of T.W.O (tyres, windshield, oil) - and you’re already in the green. We recommend that you
check the pressure in the tyres at least every other time when you stop to refill the gas tank. Be sure that you adjust the pressure according to the specification. Keeping your windshield crispy clean is an obvious one, but quite important as well. Layers of dust and splattered insects can seriously impair your vision on the road, and that counts as a serious security risk. Finally, you already know the importance of keeping the engine well-oiled. Sure, the car itself is going to give you warning when oil level gets too low, but it doesn’t hurt to check every now and then and add some accordingly in order to keep everything running in a smooth
fashion.
Choose good parking spots
When you need to stop and get some rest or sleep over somewhere, it is always a good idea to find your car a nice spot in the shade. That way you will keep the interior from heating before you start the next round. Garages are awesome, but sometimes a tree can be just as good (unless there’s a flock of birds waiting to give you an all-natural coat of paint). A good idea would be to invest in an
all weather car cover that you can put over the car to protect it from snow, rain, and hail. The elements can do a lot of damage if the car remains completely unprotected, so stay safe and consider the options to avoid such situations.
Cleanliness is crucial
Let’s face it, there’s no way your car is going to be spotless on its own while you’re road tripping. Dust, rain, wind - these are all going to make things pretty dirty along the way. But, as long as you
keep your windscreen clean during the ride, you can always wash up everything first chance you get. In fact, it is a good idea to clean your car whenever it gets really dusty as that way you’ll diminish the risk of dirt clogging up in unwanted places. Keeping it clean on the inside is another important aspect, especially if you’re travelling with kids. While it’s highly recommended not to eat inside as crumbs are bound to get in every hard to reach place, you can at least localize the damage by using trash bags and emptying them whenever you get the chance to do so.
Our final advice would be to enjoy yourself and have fun. Road trips are one of the best bonding activities for families or groups of friends, and with minimum effort they can be comfortable and pleasant to everyone involved.
