Being on the same flight as Dave and Liz from Wales, the 3.5 hour flight to Perth was a breeze and the quantas staff again provided an excellent service on the small inter city flight. Having pre-booked our accommodation we were a little concerned to find the Comfort Hostel was way outside Perth Centre as we waved goodbye to the city bound Dave and Liz. Nevertheless, we decided to stick with the reservation as it was only two nights. Despite its suburbia location we did expect the hostel staff to be full of information about how to get into city centre but to our surprise the only thing interesting to come from the receptionists mouth was an entirely new form of rude. It being a Public Holiday we had to loiter on the main road until ... read more

So after I posted my last entry in London, I went for a walk around the city on the monday and looked at some of the design shops in the Oxo Tower building and bought a reading light from one shop which is essentially a wire person reading where the light is it's head. After that I walked over to St Pauls Cathederal and climbed the 520 odd steps in narrow one way corridors to the top where there is a magnificant view of the city. And the monuments to the Duke of Wellington and Lord Nelson are quite impressive too. On the tuesday I packed my bags in the morning then went for a tour around the new globe theatre then sat along the themes for a bit before heading out to Heathrow for my ... read more

... read more

Day 81 Narembeen 18/09/06 We awoke around 7.30am to find the boys still asleep. Leanne and I studied the weather information in the paper and watched the forecasts on TV, before deciding to stay an extra day in Narembeen, as it was raining in Kalgoorlie. Based on information from Des, we have decided to skip Esperance, if the weather there is windy and wet. Annette woke Ben up around 8.00am and our boys got up shortly after. Once breakfast was eaten, Daniel walked with Ben to school (for a look) and William got some diary work done, so he could go to the shop and help Des. On return from his walk to the school, Daniel also did some diary work, before heading across to the supermarket. William was straight into the checkout counter, even processing ... read more

The following day we headed for Denham and stopped on the way to see the Stromatolites. Anyone who has seen them or read Bill Bryson's 'Down Under' will know all about these but for everyone else I will explain! They are huge colonies of bacteria that have been around for millions of years and are thought to be what made life in our oceans possible by producing oxygen. Cool, huh? Until you seem them that is because they just look like dark grey rocks on a beach! Next stop, Monkey Mia where you can see wild dophins coming into the shore and a particular pod are fed (only a small proportion of their daily requirement though) - was looking forward to this as everyone had been raving about it but was hugely disappointed, it was all ... read more

Well finally it was time to leave Broome and we were quite sad. We headed down the highway 110km south to Barn Hill Station campground. The only instructions we had to find the place was to “turn at the white tractor tyre”! Well there it was, and turned we did and drove in on the red dirt road, opening and closing 3 gates, for 9kms. At the end of the road was a higgledy piggledy arrangement of caravans, some parked amongst a few drought starved trees and the rest out in the heat of the day and all up to their axles in glowing red dirt. With the heat at 35 ° - and no power available to run the air-conditioning, a tin shed for a shop, small alfresco ablution blocks (no roof) and a small ... read more

After my trip to Kakadu, I spent a few days chilling out (and clawing at my numerous insect bites!) in Darwin (tours can be soooooo exhausting!!), going out drinking/partying and looking for a lift to Broome. Another girl from my tour, Lauren, had the same idea so we went in search together. Lauren met some guys - Oz, Norm (2 israelis) and Manuel (a Spaniard), in her hostel who were heading that way and had space in their car so we arranged to meet them for a drink (to suss them out!) and decided they seemed like laid back, fun loving guys so agreed to go with them and started planning our road trip :) We took 4 days to drive across and covered nearly 2,000km. It was quite a tight squish fitting all of our ... read more
