Lancelin Dunes
Just arrived at the Lancelin dunes - our truck with some of the group standing around trying to figure out what is goint to happen next *g* 0500h
This is not my time of the day... anyway, i have to get out of my bed, jump under the shower, have a small breakfast and then meet with the girls (Sandra, Marijke & Christina) to catch our taxi that will take us to Wellington station in central Perth. This is the pick-up point where we will get on the bus (later more properly referred to as "the truck"). The taxi is there as ordered and we are on our way to Perth. The sun is rising and it seems like a nice and sunny day is coming up. Slowly the drowsiness fades away and is replaced by a feeling of excitement about the days to come. We do have an itinerary for the trip, so we have a pretty good idea of what is going to expect us in regards of sightseeing. But the most interesting and important part of tours like these is always the people that you spend the next days with...
Wellington station is a common starting point for many of the tours starting in Perth, so quite a few people are already standing at the bus stop. Being so early in the morning,

A shot from the ridge of one of the dunes. none of us four is in the communication mood so we just stand together and wait for someone from our tour operator to turn up. Eventually our truck turns up and the vehicle looks pretty promising. A four wheel drive Isuzu with space for 15 people. Out of the crowd of people a few other guys start moving towards the truck and the first glances and smiles are exchanged. On the truck are already a few people who got picked up at their accommodations. Our driver, Scott, gets out and handles our luggage. He seems to be a nice guy, definitely an Aussie, and a cheerful character. As we get on the truck the first greetings are exchanged and we start to introduce us to each other. Scott, our driver gives a short announcement on the PA, that we will pick up another girl in Joondalup (a suburb northeast of Perth city), which is no problem as it we will pass through Joondalup on our way to Lancelin.
Lancelin is the first stop on our trip. It is a relatively large community (mind: by WA standards!) about 1.5 hours north of Perth. Most of the people living there are

Me, sandboarding the Lancelin Dunes :-) fishermen, lobster being the most popular seafood. Apparently a lot of the people living there make up to 500,000 AUD per year. You won’t guess if you look at the houses… Only when you realise that five and more cars (big ones) are parked in front of them you get the idea that rock lobster fishing seems to be a nice way to earn your living. However, we are here to do some sandboarding on the famous Lancelin dunes – and that’s what we do (see pictures). From Lancelin we take the bush track to experience some serious off-road driving and for us four in the back row it is time to fasten the seatbelts. After a bit of confusion (“I believe, we had to take the last one left – or is it the next one?” Always good to have an experienced driver that knows his way around ;-) we eventually make it to the highway to go further north. Next stop is the pinnacles. A quite impressive scenery, a bit surreal, especially the fact, that you can actually see the Indian Ocean while standing in a desert scenery (see pictures). We talk a walk through the pinnacles and

-self explaining- soon it is time to hit the road again to make it to Lynton station – a sheep and wheat farm further up north. We have a short stop for lunch at Jurien bay, the group is still a bit estranged but the conversations between the members are getting more relaxed…
Arriving at Lynton Station: This will be our place to stay for the night, and I am pretty much surprised by the fact that we have cabins with beds instead of the expected barn with camping gear. That’s quite something, as well as the nice showers and toilets, especially after the long day sitting in the truck… On our way to Lynton station we have picked a couple of six packs and after starting the BBQ, the campfire and having the first stubby, the atmosphere is getting really relaxed. This is promising, and I am looking forward to our next day!
Come back soon, to check for the next days of our trip!
