Just off the main street in York is a swing bridge across the local river and we walked over and back and took in the morning views. The main street itself is something to behold. In the end it was arguably the most enjoyable couple of hours spent on this journey. Only an hour out of Perth this is a local tourist spot that enjoys the weekend crowds similar to Hahndorf. The town has done everything right to retain the heritage and architecture of the buildings and shop fronts from yesteryear; however, some of the quirky little shops and stores are what make the place unique. Filled with various shops, cafes and two hotels there is plenty to look at along the way. There were some intruiging antique stores and we also spent some cash in ... read more

G'day guys and gals, here we are upside down and strewth is it hot out there! And where'd all these creepy crawlies come from?! Well our first month away has flown by but we've been filling our time well. The flight from Dubai to Perth was a long one, but gave us plenty of opportunity to catch up on films and stock up on 'free' booze & drinks. (Though if I'd fully appreciated how expensive booze was in Perth I would have downed a few more on the plane!). After Dubai I was longing for a $3 pint but alas such things do not exist here. In part due to the sheer geography of the country and part because the minimum wage here is around $20 dollars an hour! (£13). Clearly they are paying the border ... read more

Off we hopped, back up to Perth for Australia Day with the Perth-Aussie Farnham’s. A national holiday celebrated on 26thJanuary this date commemorates the arrival of the British first fleet to establish a colony at Sydney Cove in 1788. The date is controversial to some Australians, particularly those indigenous aborigines, leading to it being called various alternatives, such as Invasion Day and Survival Day- as we saw with the protests on the day at a function attended by the Australian prime minister (not sure if you got the on the news back home). The conflict between the two groups seems to be a hard one to solve and is a considerable national challenge. Anyway, moving on ... For Australia Day, we ventured out to the Darling Range of Hills, inland of Perth, to an idyllic small ... read more

Friday 29th April dawned and, as with yesterday, we had nothing particular planned for the day (except, that was, to be back at the caravan by about 5pm so that we could watch a certain wedding that was due to take place on the other side of the world!). On the spur of the moment we decided to catch the bus from outside of the caravan park into the centre of Perth. I checked the bus timetable we had been given when we booked in and identified the next suitable bus to catch – 9:50am. We made it with a few minutes to spare and paid the princely sum of $3:60 each for a “Day Rider” – an absolute bargain. The journey took about 40 minutes and went through Belmont and on through the inner suburbs ... read more

Wednesday 30 June 2010 For anyone planning to ship their car whatever you do make sure you build into your itinerary additional time to cope with the delays that packing, customs and clearance will take. Here we are, finally, about to start our final long leg of this epic journey from London to Sydney. The car is sitting in the driveway in Kalamandu of our newly made friends, Sandra and Jack Reffell, who have been wonderful and so generous in giving John and I a bed each evening since we arrived here in Perth to get the car through the eight agencies that our shipping agent, Australia Shipping and Trade, said we had to go through. They too have been great in helping us through the minefield of paperwork, especially Jeff Shaw, the MD, who has ... read more

So here I am. I believe it's been 3 and a bit months since I posted something on Travelblog and one of the reasons I'm posting THIS is because I've been enjoying reading through the things I posted in the past. Geocities closed in October and so my rather large website was forced offline. I saved just about all of the last 12 years to an external hard drive so I look forward to putting it all back together in the future. Travelblog is my chosen medium for now - and probably later - because of it's ease of use and the indexing. I'm at the same place I was last time I was in Perth - Lake Leshenaultia - because I really wouldn't want to be anywhere else. When it's good it's fantastic but when ... read more
