So in late February 2024, I headed back to Perth, to complete the last 450kms of my Bibbulmun Track adventure. Most people say it is too early to start out on the track and with news outlets showing quite a few bush fires in West Australia, I was a bit concerned. However, I was committed to the trip and decided to go with it and see what transpired. I had decided to go as light as possible and therefore took my Deuter 32 litre backpack rather than the 75 litre backpack I had taken previously, which I felt was too big and heavy. So on the 28th February, I caught the TransWA bus down to Pemberton ready to head off the next day to complete the trek. As previously commented, I had to backfill sections that ... read more

This morning, we had a later start as we had decided that we would do the 10.30am Pemberton Tramway ride out to The Cascades. Bernie has been wanting his hair cut for the last few days, so our leisurely start today provided the perfect opportunity. He put his boxers on and went outside to sit on one of the outdoor chairs on our small verandah at the back of our room. Tracey proceeded to execute the No. 1 clipper cut on his head and the No. 2 clipper cut on his beard. All of this under the beady eye of the motel’s resident kookaburra. Luckily the kookaburra didn’t laugh at the old bloke having his hair clippered out on the verandah!! After breakfast we headed down to the Pemberton Tramway. We hadn’t booked ahead online but ... read more

After enjoying a day-and-a-half of rest and relaxation at the wildlife utopia of Donnelly River Village, I endeavoured to leave on Monday morning (20th September) only to find myself lingering as I passed mobs of kangaroos lazing about in the sunshine on the front lawns of the local houses; and then when I finally did manage to turn out of the main street I encountered the same male emu I had seen on each of the previous two days, still faithfully shepherding his four youngsters from one grazing spot to the next. It wasn't hard to see the attraction of this remote hideaway in the midst of the karri forest, for both animals and humans alike - even if I couldn't approve of the visiting families feeding the tame wildlife (which consists mostly of kangaroos, wallabies, ... read more

Day 36 Schafer Shelter to Northcliffe 14.5 km This would have to the most amazing place to wake up so far- the most stunning sunrise over the dam, two distinct colour schemes within ten minutes. As you can see for the multiple pics, I was impressed. In no hurry to leave today as it's an incredibly short 14 and a bit kms into the next track town- Northcliffe. I feel very energised today even knowing another town is ahead and it's been a short little section from Pemberton- maybe it's the sunrise effect. So, having dawdled this morning it has been a good dawdle and I finally set off at 09:00. A lot of mixed terrain today, lots of flat as well as some of the more difficult slippy stuff. The track is very well cleared ... read more

Day 35 Warren Shelter to Schafer Shelter 22.1 km Two chickens walking on the footpath One goes to cross the road The other one says "Don't do it, you will never hear the end of it!" Dot points of my day Slept in! 07:10! Left at 08:40 Moved the 20m branch off the path on the way to the loo- glad it didn't come down on the shelter Walked for 2 hours before a break- legendary apple, nut muesli bar and a coffee Hiking today had the Warren River for company- popping in and out of view as well as a few of the little wooden bridges Speccy bridge of the day- River Road Bridge, the old 150 m long timber carting bridge- a mix of old and new sleepers (this link provides more historical info ... read more

Day 34 Pemberton to Warren Shelter 22.6 km Only a very short section ahead- 2 nights and 3 days of walking until Northcliffe. A bit of a late start with repacking and breakfast, etc. Geoff dropped me back down to the trailhead so that I could walk back up past the bnb (I can't bring myself to take shortcuts!). As I walked through the streets past the DPAW office and towards the Gloucester Tree the sky was getting darker and darker- it opened up just as I got to the highschool and completely set in. Sought shelter at the public loos at the Gloucester Tree for half an hour while it torrentially down poured and hailed. Needless to say climbing the tree was out today. I was glad that I had climbed it a couple ... read more

Day 33 Beedelup Shelter to Pemberton 25km For the first time in a week spent with the sisters I leave after them at 07:50. It's not that I slept in (despite a loud multi person snoring night) or that I am suddenly disorganised today, it's more a case of that bittersweet feeling that town days are now giving me. Pemberton is only a 25km walk away and Geoff is meeting me, but with that brings all the news of home and that I have to think about that stuff again, I am very much enjoying my escape from the reality of the day to day of my normal life. So, I dawdle. Enough of that... Leaving camp there is a seriously big hill- where did it mention that one in the guidebook?!!! Not much further on, ... read more

Day 31, 32 Boarding House to Beavis, Beavis to Beedelup 21.2km, 22km Rain, rain, rain. Clearly affecting my face- today it looks very old lady... settling is required (a friend, Karen, told me once that as you get older your face "settles" through the day- I am beginning to agree with her). Rain, rain, rain. Stops at 0800, out of the shelter at 08:10. Even though the rain has stopped there is 7.5kms of waterbush to contend with. The waterbush is absolutely laden with water and every movement creates a waterfall. No matter which way you move the bush will flick or whack you across the face, head, neck, etc and release a cascade of water. Then it rains again. Rainbow. Rain. Waterbush. The actual terrain wasn't arduous at this point, just wet. The actual terrain ... read more

Day 30 Tom Road Shelter to Boarding House Shelter 24.2km in 5 hrs, 50 mins of walking plus 70 mins of breaks Slept well but a noisy hut to start the day, consequently on the trail by 0700 (which is pretty early in winter when it's still dark until later). My mood lifts as the sunshine breaks through the tall trees, much milder temp this morning. Lots of green tunnels to walk through and the Donnelly River ever present even when obliterated by thick bush at times. Lots of bridges, lots of karri bark strips. Pass through One Tree Bridge campsite which is deserted. take advantage of the public loos and rubbish bin as well as a picnic table for an extended morning cuppa. It's a great stretch through to the swing bridge and then the ... read more
