Day 3 – Thursday Another long day and an even bigger adventure, by waking up at beginning our journey by 8am we set off heading for Margaret River. On our way down we stopped at a chocolate factory, this was a great idea until there was free samples, filling our pockets and carrying on the journey to Candy Cow, well known for its sweets and fudge! Despite feeling like I was back in England by having several cow statues surrounding me. Next we began our wine tour, we started by going to a Duckstein Brewery, a very beautiful place with a lake and a very welcoming place, where we received free samples of different ciders and beer. Nothing to complain about! We also went to Driftwood Winery where we got to experience wine tasting, which I ... read more

We were keen to camp amongst the giant Karri trees at Pemberton, but alas, overcast skies and constant drizzle, change our course and we continue to head west. On our way through we stop at Augusta and in particular Western Australia’s tallest light house Cape Leeuwin, which sits at the most south western tip of Australia where the Indian and Southern Ocean’s meet. After making our way as far west as possible we are certainly ready to start our trek north. We make our way to the outskirts of Margaret River and set up camp at Conto’s Campground in the drizzly rain. Rain, rain, go away!! In the morning we head out to explore Jewel Cave, the largest show cave in Western Australia. As soon as we enter the cave we are immediately awed by this ... read more

It was early morning as we pulled into the car park at Meelup beach. Our mission was to mountain bike through the undulating bushland, then venture through some of the local wineries and finish off with a dip in the ocean at the tranquil spot, known as Meelup Beach. The car park was empty, as it was still only 0700. But for those who venture to Western Australia in summer, this is the best time. By 1000 the sun would be overhead and scorching. Even at his time you could feel its warm embrace. As I unhooked my mountain bike, I noticed a movement by the beach. A startled kangaroo looked up and bounded past our car. After 10 years in Australia, this was the nearest I had ever seen one so close to the ocean. ... read more

13thDecember 2012. We departed Perth Big 4 this morning and left the stormy wet weather behind us. We headed towards Margaret River as we have very fond memories of our last visit to Margaret River. First stop was Fremantle as Sasha was craving sushi. We then travelled south and visited Australia's longest jetty at Bussleton. Next stop was Margaret River and we headed towards the beach to see the sunset. After our beautiful sunset, we stopped at a rest area, 50km south of Margaret River for dinner and camped for the night.... read more

The Margaret River region is very beautiful and obviously flush with cash. It is unbelievably lush with a mix of tall densely wooded forests, beautifully manicured vineyards and grassy paddocks filled with dairy cattle. Below the ground is equally stunning with approximately 200 caves, only a small number of which are open to the public. We located ourselves in a caravan park some 17 kilometres out of town. This proved to be quite central to our activities. Set on a farm, we were entertained by a variety of animals, some of which proved to be more friendly than others as Greg found out. Just ask the pig. There is lots to entertain visitors. Wineries, beer and cider breweries, several chocolate factories, several cheese factories and an icecreamery all had tastings and sales. Mazes, mountain bike and ... read more

Since I have been in Australia, I've kept my work colleagues amused with my stupid questions about snakes. Before I headed up to the Blue Mountains to go walking I asked David what to do if I saw a snake. I was actually serious - do I run? Do I stay still? David thought this was the funniest thing he'd ever heard. As it happens, we never left the pavement so it wasn't a concern. However I have raised this again with a number of people, who have all been too busy laughing and telling me I'll never see one to actually give me an answer. Finally I came across one colleague, a farm girl like myself, who paused from her laughter to tell me that I should run. At last, an answer! Yet when the ... read more

Today was a busy day for Michael and I. We had four things we wanted to do today. They include going to a bird sanctuary, winery, visit a new surfing area and Margaret River and Bunbury for shopping. We again ate breakfast at the apartment, pretty simple and save a few dollars. As I mentioned before the food is expensive in Australia. We drove Cindy’s Dad to work again, however the trip was very sad. While driving down the main street to his plant, know for kangaroos wondering the road, one came jumping out of the woods right in front of an 18-wheeler truck. The site was horrifying and very traumatic for all of us, but especially for Michael. He was very upset and would not talk for quite some time. I can understand how he ... read more

Happy Easter to one and all I hope you’re not getting too stuffed on Easter eggs and DIY! Here is our latest blog, we hope you enjoy. Remember to look at all the photos as we often give a little bit more information about where we were on them (scroll right down to bottom of page). It is sometimes hard when you travel to keep perspective on things. Days roll into weeks and you lose a sense of time. One thing we often ask ourselves is: is this right? Is it right that we are thousands of miles away from family and friends? Is it right that we haven't settled down, got a career job, bought a house or started a family? Is it right we are having such a good time whilst others work to ... read more

After a rather damp night in tents we completed the all too familiar routine of packing up the bus, then we headed into the Southern Forests to see the Diamond Tree. Standing over 50m tall with a lookout platform at the top the Karri tree is one of the only few remaining active look out posts the rangers still use to spot fires. The questions you're probably asking yourself is how do you get up the tree? Well it used to be via wooden pegs, although after a falling branch wiped out a significant portion leaving a ranger stranded up the top they decided to use metal pegs. From the pictures you'll see this is still a precarious climb! Due to the slippery conditions we were only allowed a few meters up. The next stop was ... read more
