on the way to lancelin
Been very lazy writing blogs lately - I haven’t even started on my Bangkok blog, the last leg of our Asian trip last June! Oh but anyway, since Kim discovered surfing this summer (yes, our Christmases down under are hot and Santa is in board shorts), we have gone on quite a few surfing road trips.

This blog is actually for two of those road trips. Our first trip to Lancelin was about a month ago. Lancelin is an excellent surf spot less than two hours away from Perth. It is also known for its sand dunes (hence the “foggy” photos of the beach). We have only been to the surfing beach of Lancelin but there is a huge area there exclusively for sandboarding and all those adventure stuff crazy people do on massive sand dunes. Me, I’m just happy relaxing by the beach with a good book 😊

The town itself is small and very quiet. A sleepy town just like those ones in the Stephen King novels where strange things happen and nobody outside town even knows hehe. Many are weekend homes and holiday rentals. There are a lot of accommodations available for surfers and beach bums

where the moore river meets the indian ocean - beautiful!
though.

On our first trip there, Kim spent most of the day surfing (and breaking the nose off his brand new board). I was just happy to read, sleep, eat and toast under the sun. The sand here is white, very fine, and cool to the touch so even if there is absolutely no cover from the sun, it’s not so bad just baking on a sarong (with dollops of sunblock on of course). We headed home at half past three and just spent the rest of the day at home.

Our second trip to Lancelin yesterday was not as fruitful. The waters were choppy, the waves were small and broken, and the worst - sand storm! It was just so windy that sand was blowing all over, stinging everyone. A lot of the people were just coming and going, too frustrated by the waves and the sand. We headed out after just a couple of hours, all our stuff packed with very fine white sand.

On the way home, we decided to look for Moore River at the spur of the moment. Thanks to our Navman, we found it after a near-miss. I’m not sure if

there are any other holiday spots along the Moore River but the one we ended up in is at the mouth of the river, where the Moore River meets the Indian Ocean. Fully-developed with a residential area on one side and the river and ocean on the other, this spot has a caravan park, toilets, BBQ grills, kayak/boat/canoe rentals, and a lookout point.

The view from the lookout point is magnificent. The dark bluish-black and green of the river contrasts very vividly with the blue and green of the ocean, slashed by a thin strip of very white sand. At high tide, this strip of sand would be gone and the Moore River would flow directly into the Indian Ocean. I’m sure it is a spectacular sight but one we did not have the luxury of seeing yesterday.

As there was no surf and the wind was just blowing too hard, we did not bother going to the beach nor the river. We just spent some time at the lookout point, taking it all in, a prayer of thanks for having the good fortune to see and experience all that we have. To travel without a care except

to have enough petrol, to see Australia’s beauty, to discover secrets in plain sight like these, to see colours as vibrant and beautiful as these, to have every worry swept away by the sun, sand and sea. How truly, truly lucky we are 😊
