Day 6: We packed up our gear and left ElQ with fond memories. We had all really enjoyed our time there. We were Kununurra bound but stopped in at El Questro owned Emma Gorge. We were at the gorge opening by 8.30am and were back just in time for morning tea at the stunning hotel /restaurant. They charge an absolute fortune for their eco shelters but they served us up the best coffee and chai lattes I've tasted up here so far! Emma Gorge was beautiful and such a mild climb that I did it in thongs, but perhaps anything was going to look tame after the mountainous El Questro Gorge yesterday. After our divine snacks we drove the 1 hour into Kununurra and set up camp at Lakeside C.P. which just happens to be where ... read more

My dream of travelling the Gibb River Road has been realised! Today we returned from our 9 day GRR adventure. I loved every minute and before I forget one gorgeous gorge from another I'm going to write it all down. to make it easier for future reading I will break the trip into 3 sections. Here is the first installment. Saturday morning, July 8th, we packed up the tent, swags, food, bags and hit the road. Not a tough driving day but it was soon pretty clear that hiring the 4WD was a good idea. First on the list was a pit stop at Meda Station. We had a poke around and drove on towards Tunnel Creek. After a bite to eat we grabbed the torches and waded into the pitch blavk waters of the cave. ... read more

Sorry you might have already had this bit but it keeps crashing so I'll send the update again but the photo's are with the other bit I sent earlier today. Hope this makes sense ha Hi How much fun is too much fun but with everything going terribly wrong.. Well not terribly but a little bit. We left Darwin all excited and headed to Litchfield National Park, where we were going to camp for a couple of nights. We parked the car and headed down for a swim in one of the rock pools, was lovely. Until we went back to the car to see that we had been robbed the bastards. I was so so lucky my big backpack was in the boot and they didn't touch my other bags that were in the back ... read more

More rocks. Sorry. But they really are fascinating in the flesh. This time it’s at Geike Gorge, where we thought it would be much the same as what we’d seen before, but it blew us away. Instead of the by now ho hum, red, honeycomb and black incredible marvels, we suddenly came across these black, eerie monstrosities that could give you nightmares. They reminded me of the Adam’s Family in daylight but would be a horror movie at night. This link is compliments of our loving daughter, who gives us so much comfort when we are so far away from home and all on our own. Please copy and paste it into the Google address bar and you'll feel as uplifted as we did when we received it. Thank you Catherine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCWF2PLo4Vs As an aside, the ... read more

We arrived in W.A. on the 10th of November. Along with the “Welcome to Western Australia” sign, crossing the border also involved a thorough inspection of our car and caravan - you can’t bring fruit, veges, honey, seeds etc. into the state and they even confiscated a fruit box we had been using for storage - even though we pointed out the label on the box showing it had come from WA in the first place! Our first stop was Kununurra, the Queen of the East Kimberleys, and the surrounding area of Lake Argyle and the Ord River - now this is a most interesting place! They built a huge dam on the Ord about 40 years ago, forming Lake Argyle and transforming the dry arid countryside into lush green pastures. Now they have so much ... read more

A unique feature of the Australian mainland is that a hefty chunk of the country apparently does not really exist. Only a tiny fraction of the population lives in The Real Australia, the remainder happy to inhabit an imaginary wonderland which lies in a narrow strip between The Real Australia and the sea. It's only a matter of time before some kid has an Emperor’s New Clothes type revelation and the rest of us come to regret forking out quite so much on real-estate in Never-Never land, as the whole edifice evaporates and we tumble into the ocean. Come to think of it, current global events may well indicate that it’s a point we’ve already reached. The Real Australians won’t mourn the loss of these fictitious lands for long, I suspect, inhabited as they are by ... read more

What a contrast after the sandstone gorges of the Kimberly interior, to arrive in Broome with its aquamarine sea and pristine white beaches. We drove to Cable Beach to eat our lunch and were overcome by the sight. We just had to go for a swim. Broome is a booming holiday town with an interesting history of pearling. We went to the movies at an historic outside cinema, sitting in deck chair canvas under the stars watching the story of the nuns at Beagle Bay. We had just visited Beagle Bay seeing the church built by the German priests and with an altar decorated with pearl shells. We called there on our way up the Dampier Peninsular to camp in lovely Pender Bay remote from civilisation. We swam in the sea and walked on the beach, ... read more
