It was not far from Mount Elizabeth station to Manning Gorge so it was an easy days drive. A stop at the roadhouse first to pay your entry fee to Manning Gorge, it is also well stocked so a great opportunity to stock up on some fresh produce. It is 7 km to the camping ground, the road in although unmade is very good. We found the camping area very good and much to our surprise not as busy as we had expected. The camp ground features a lot of big Boab trees and there was plenty of shade. You can be miles from home and the next thing you know you meet up with someone you know. Jenny and Pete who are friends of Rod and Jeanette’s set up camp not far from us. One ... read more

Left Kununurra and headed onto the Great Northern Highway we stopped at a free camp called Leycesters Rest named after a boy who lost his life here.Again we arrived late afternoon only to find the main campground full so we settle for the top park, decided to light a fire and cook the Mackerel steak on the hotplate, life is hard.Next morning we head for Halls Creek a small town with an interesting history and an alcohol problem. Two camp sites one in town the other 10km out of town at the old town.We decided to go to the old town C/P what a choice, such a quirky place you have never seen,as you drive the 10 km on dirt road road we wonder what we are going to find. On approaching the site which is called Halls ... read more

21st November 2012. Early start today as we were keen to visit the Kimberley region and travel towards Broome via the Gibb River Road. Our first stop was Emma Gorge, but it was closed due to the wet season. Next stop, the Elquestro township. Hmmm, also closed. Every attraction in the Kimberley region was closed until April 2013. We were very disappointed until we saw the sign to the Barnett River Gorge. After 3km of muddy terrain and almost getting bogged, we arrived at the Barnett River Gorge to discover a shallow river filled with lots of green algie. We decided against spending a night in the Kimberley and headed towards Broome. We arrived in Derby (about 200km west of Broome) about 9pm and all the service stations were closed. Since we could not go any ... read more

Kununurra day 4 4th July WOW!!!! that dinner was really nice last night at the Pump House restaurant on Lake Kununurra, the night didn’t go smoothly though, we got to the restaurant and were seated outside but that very evening another “Arctic blast” hit the north and we were ALL freezing so the boys drove back to the vans and got our jackets, we sat there for over an hour and a half waiting for our meal and finally Jim went and asked the Maitre d’ if the chef needed a hand with the dinners, I decided I was just to cold sitting out there it was really unpleasant so I went in side and sat down at the door and noticed and empty table for six, I asked to ... read more

Zebra Rock Mine Today we went to the Zebra Rock Mine. It was heaven. Uncle Glenn use to tease me and say that when I go to mining places like Broken Hill I will find precious rocks and gems all over the ground. Well that just hasn’t been true….. until now!!! This place is amazing. There is this rock here that is red and cream striped and it looks just like zebra skin. This nice bloke called John took us on a tour to the mine. WE could take what we liked. Dad told me not to take too much cause you had to weight it and pay for it. This lovely lady called Ruth showed me how to sand it back and polish it. She made us yummy scones with fresh cream and jam. Lucky ... read more

We started the second day of this leg of the journey by getting up early to watch the sunrise on the beach at Cape Leveque where we'd been swimming the day before. We had the beach to ourselves and were spoilt by the views. To break up the long day of driving we stopped in Derby for lunch and fuel, as well as a new pair of sunglasses for Jo; she likes these even less than the last pair so their days are already numbered! The next stop was the Boab Prison Tree. This tree is estimated to be about 4000 years old and is a sacred Aboriginal site. Unfortunately the white settlers thought it would make a good prison holding approximately 16 people once the the fibrous centre had been removed. Apparently the Kimberley's was ... read more

As you may have guessed we are once again part of the unemployment stats, having finished up at the station on March 4th (happy birthday Scott!!!). Before our departure, we were lucky enough to have a ride in the station chopper! Having both never been in a chopper before this little lego-model was an eye opener. It can even be flown with the doors off completely, not that we went for that option, but made us aware that the doors literally are only there for keeping the rain off the passengers! It was beautiful to see the land, river & station from above and even over some fires that were still burning having recently been lit by lightning. Leaving on a severely corrugated homestead road was a bit of a challenge for Boris, made us realise ... read more
