Pete and I are on the road again at long last and heading slowly to Darwin. We have been on the road 3 days now and just loving it. Can’t beat just pulling up to some off road camping area and settling in for the late afternoon and evening as it is just so relaxing. Tonight we can’t get internet access so hence I am taking the opportunity to write my blog!
Leaving Perth, we have travelled through coal mining areas and then on to vast expanses of wheat crops. Now we are on the coast at the beautiful town of Esperance where we have viewed spectacular islands off shore and the turquoise sea and pristine white sandy beaches. To top it all Pete and I took a short coastal track to a lookout when I was only 30cm away from stepping on a deadly Brown Snake that I obviously hadn’t seen! It was Pete that warned me but he was too late and I had walked right past what I thought was a twig. Thank goodness its head was facing away from me. I think it actually was sunning itself and it was only when Pete saw it move
that he realised it wasn’t a twig. I thought they had all hibernated for the winter but obviously not! As I was only wearing sandals at the time I feel very lucky. When we get to Alice Springs we will show the photo to a reptile expert there who we are sure will confirm that it was indeed a venomous brown snake. It may have only been small a but the venom is just as deadly as a fully grown adult!
Today we travelled through Norseman, the first town after the crossing of the Nullabor from the east, and a very sad rundown town it is what with half of the main street shut due to lack of business interest. The bank had iron bars over all it 8 windows so all in all I can safely say that it is not the type of town that Pete and I would like to settle permanently in!
Coolgardie, the only town we went through on our way to Kalgoorlie was interesting with its very very wide streets due to the necessity to turn around the camel trains in the old days! The small town that in its day was
huge has many impressive large buildings and an amazing theatre and well worth the stop.
On to Kalgoorlie, famous for its goldmines and brothels! A town now with a population of 30,000 with again a fascinating main street of old buildings and hotels with verandas where one could picture all the old gold miners spending their cash on booze and loose women! We have had a great time checking out the huge hole in the ground which is the gold mine, taking in a tour of a working brothel on the notorious Hay Street and sampling the wares in one of the many historical pubs on the main street.
We are now ready for some serious long driving over the Nullabor Plains.
