Before reaching Fitzroy Crossing we enjoyed a ‘free’ camp night at the Mary Pool roadside stop on the Mary River. This was a large site that is very popular especially in peak season as grey nomads work their way around the west of Australia. We shared the site with about 6 other groups, some who arrived after dark and left before sunup, and a herd of inquisitive cattle. The cattle wandered amongst the campers pretending to eat the green grass at the base of the trees, but really we knew they were checking everyone and everything out. A lick on Marian’s chair was not to their liking so they moved on. Thankfully the bull gave us a wide berth. Our vans continued to reveal red bull dust in places we thought it couldn’t possibly get to, ... read more

Days on the Road = 85 Days (12 Weeks & 1 Day) 22nd September 2012 Well we are all packed up again for a long drive from Broome to Fitzroy Crossing. Still no rain just beautiful blue skies and hot weather which will only get hotter as we travel further north and now inland of Western Australia. There was not much to look at in the way of scenery as we travelled to Fitzroy Crossing, however, we do come across these one lane bridges which we found to be quite funny considering this is a major highway heading north. We figured out that upon approaching if another vehicle is heading in the opposite direction that the first vehicle to arrive and indicate first should be the first to cross. We also stopped for a pit-stop mid-way ... read more

Headed up to Cairns for a few days, much further than we originally thought we would get to but I was keen to get some sun and have a look around. Stayed in a scary caravan park, that looked OK from the outside, of course looks can be deceiving. Deeper inspection found toilet block deprived of cleaners and a hood like appearance of permeant residence. While siting relaxed on our ‘BigBoy’ camp chairs a man came past and informed us to lock up all our valuables as theft happens regularly. The Internet trip adviser website had around 40 bad reviews on the place which helped with the drama. Unfortunately to cut the story short it turned out fine, nothing to report back on but we didn’t stay on a weekend and believe it might get a ... read more

Fitzroy Crossing 5th June 2012 Fitzroy Crossing, situated on the Fitzroy River is located 2.21kms South of Junjuwa, 11.7kms North of Bayulu, 84.74kms NorthEast of Yungngora, (all communities), and 222.06kms West of Halls Creek. It is situated in the centre of some of the best pastoral country in Australia and is the heart of the Kimberley Region. The Fitzroy Valley attracted early pastoralists such as the McDonald Bros in 1886 when they set up the Fossil Downs cattle station. This was following a three-year, 3,500 mile trek from Goulburn, New South Wales. Fitzroy Crossing was a creation of necessity; early settlers to the Kimberley needed a place to ford the mighty Fitzroy River. The old, (original), crossing was the shortest and safest route. Focus shifted from the original townsite of Fitzroy Crossing when a modern stilted ... read more

After a quick trip to the Broome Markets and indulging the senses with some local mango icecream, we hit the road. We stopped at the Willare Bridge Roadhouse for lunch as I had talked it up after being there twice on my tour out into the Kimberleys just over a week ago. The big lawns and shadey trees out the front did the trick as we had a quick bite to eat. The plan was to stop at a free camp for the night just short of Fitzroy Crossing but on the way we stopped to see if we could assist two gents who had suffered a flat literally in the middle of nowhere. They had a spare raring to go but the hydraulically tightened wheel nuts simply couldn’t be budged to remove the flat tyre. ... read more

Last night, there was a lovely delicate perfume in the air, which we think came from the blossoms of the acacia trees around the van. We realized this morning, that the bulls were grazing on the fallen blossoms. We have seen many interesting plants that are unfamiliar to us on this trip. I have taken photos of a few, hoping to be able to identify them some time in the future. Many of the plants bear fruit and pods, which are probably edible, but being aware that some are not, we only ventured to try the seeds of an acacia. As wattle seeds are used by the indigenous people and now famous chefs, we thought they would be safe. They were very pleasant to eat, but needed to be skinned, as the skin was bitter. No ... read more

This morning we got up and drove over to the Flinder’s range. Here we drove up to the car park and did a hike. It was a tough one. Me and one of the other girls took it really slow and only made it about 3/4 of the way up. It was just sooo hot and very steep. Beautiful views from up there though. We then had lunch and headed down and drove through the ranged before getting to our camp on a farm that had facilities. We were all so happy to have a shower. We had an awesome dinner and some more good chats. ... read more

Blog, Blog, Blog, Blog, Blog, Blog, Blog, Bloody Blogs!!!!!! Think I might go back to work driving buses and have a rest, what number are we up to now? Must be in the hundreds…ah well it’s Monday and we’re not travelling so not much else to do so here goes….besides we have just had news that readership is up (must keep putting on pics of nude women?) Well what did we do at Fitzroy Crossing before setting off for Broome? Ah yes, a visit to Geeky George or was it Geikie Gorge? Anyway the gorge is absolutely average. However it does have several advantages to others in it is only 18km from the caravan park, it is a sealed road, it has toilets with running water into a porcelain bowl and it’s longest walk is only ... read more
