Day 161 - Derby
Well there’s not much planned for today, a bit more washing, a bit more relaxing, a bit more socialising and this afternoon is the NRL finals between Paramatta and Melbourne. Everything will stop in the campground at approximately 2.30pm!
Nige came over this morning to show us the photographs he took out on the mud flaps last night, they’re brilliant and really funny. We’ll have a go at doing some more tonight and see if we can get the same mysterious effects!
Dar did us boiled eggs for breakfast this morning and made us some beaut little egg cups to serve them in! Delicious and a good way to start the morning! It’s a lovely little spot we’ve got here and it just goes to show that you don’t need to be in some swanky tourist town to have a great time. Derby is a funny little place and you need to be prepared to create your own fun in the sun although it does have a gorgeous looking public swimming pool and a golf course if either of those things take your fancy. The swimming very much appeals and by mid morning we’re
all feeling hot and in need of a good cool down!
We get a morning Skype call from Kangaroojack who are now on their way up to the most northerly point in Australia, Cape York. They’re having a good journey so far and seem to be making short work of it and are hoping to be at Bramwell Station tonight. Good going guys and safe travels.
Lachy and Zali have been entertaining themselves and us, Nige has been going through some photography tips with me as I’m still really struggling with the camera and Darryl has been having a much deserved chill out in the sun. We all decide to head out to the Prison Boab Tree (again) and check out the longest trough in the southern hemisphere which is apparently close by!
We all pile in the cars and head off, it’s only just down the road but it’s too hot to cycle … according to the kids!! The boab tree doesn’t bring any more surprises since yesterday, it’s an interesting piece of history though with some sad memories from days gone by.
Bit of a shame but we find a dead parrot next to
where we’ve parked. Clearly nothing we can do to help him and it makes us think of the dead parrot sketch from the good old Monty Python days so now we’re falling about laughing! How insensitive!
It’s so hot right now and that long cattle trough suddenly starts to look like a bit of a swimming pool! It must be the heat playing tricks on us all! The trough really is very long, it’s 121 metres and the water is a nice cool temperature, too good for cattle! Jimmy and Vikki with their dog Zeath who are camped across from us are here too and Vikki is already in her swimsuit so hops right into the trough closely followed by Zeath! Soon enough we’re all sitting in it and cooling off, well it was far more interesting than just looking at it and wondering!
We make a quick stop on the way back to camp for supplies of nibbles to keep us from starving during the match this afternoon and also to get some veggies for our big cook up tonight! There’s a huge pot in the open air camp kitchen so we’re going to prepare a big
feast for anyone who wants to join us! We throw in lots of veggies and then Nige chucks in 4 enormous Turkey Legs with garlic and seasoning and we just leave it to simmer all afternoon! Vikki and Jimmy will be joining us too so they’ve added to the concoction, it really will be a feast!
There’s a few more people turned up to watch the rugby and one of them even brings his larger flat screen TV which makes it better for everyone! There’s plenty of friendly rivalry going on as Melbourne take an almost immediate 6 point lead over Nige’s team - the Paramatta Eels! It’s a tense game which see Melbourne victorious in the end. Nevermind Nige and Lachy, better luck next time!
We cart the big stew pot down to camp and cook up some rice then sit around enjoying the fruits of our labour! It was beautiful, so tasty and there was still plenty for seconds and thirds and left overs for tomorrow!
While we were chatting to Ed last night over Skype, Nige had been out on the mud flats trying some new photo techniques. Tonight we all joined in and
got some on our camera too! It was such a hoot. Imagine if you can, it’s dark with only the full moon in the sky for light. There are 7 people and a rather beautiful dog all standing in front of two cameras set up on tripods. We set the timers off on the cameras and once we hear the shutter go we stand perfectly still for about 15 seconds then when Nige shouts ‘Run’ we all belt to the sides out of the cameras view point! Zeath, the dog, does it perfectly too although one time he just kept running across the mud flats and it was ages before he came back to us!! The results are brilliant, really eerie and we’re all see through. It’s great! We try lots of things out and have such a laugh. We must have all looked completely mad! Honestly, it was a hoot. Try it out!
After all the fun and frolics we head for bed after a great relaxing day.
