Friday 1st Dec We got up early to get to monkey Mia for 8am where the dolphins swim right into the shallows and people feed them- it is very touristy but it was special as there was a baby dolphin born overnight that turned up. At 11 we went out on a big catamaran but there was just the 3 of us and one other girl- our own private charter! It took us to a peal farm where we learned that pearls aren’t formed by grains of sand getting stuck! Then we saw some dugongs which are weird creatures that started the myths of the mermaids but I’m not sure how they got these cow creatures muddled up with girlfish! We also saw some more Dolphins and a few leatherneck turtles but they were quite far ... read more

Wed 29th Nov- got a free public bus and a train to get to the place where I got the Greyhound bus north from. The bus left at 9.45 and I arrived in Geraldton at 4pm. On the bus we watched a good film called the notebook. I cant complain about the journey , the bus is air-conditioned and really spacious especially compared to the Oz experience busses. Someone from the hostel picked me up. The hostel in a big old house which could be done up really beautifully but hasn’t so it is all a bit dusty and tired. In my room are 2 Canadians- Tim and Teresa and a German Sabrina. In the evening we all went to a really empty pub. A guy from the hostel tagged along- he is a little strange- ... read more

Finally I manage to get the car out of the car park and onto the road heading south. My first stop however is only a short hour’s drive to Coral Bay. Still part of the Ningaloo Reef, Coral Bay sits on the other end of the reef. The whole town is solely set up for tourists with only 126 people living there, all of which work in the tourist industry. I spent a couple of days lazing around there and starting to read my dive master manuals. As the town is so small it doesn’t have a water or electricity supply. Electricity comes from a generator and water comes from 850 metres underground. When it surfaces it is 56 degrees and has to cool in big pool before being used. It is full of minerals and ... read more

The trip to Denham required a couple of transfers - first back to the main bus at Binnu, and then to a minibus at Overlander for the 1.5 hour drive to Denham. Elena, Daniel, and I were going to be staying at the same hostel - a YHA - and my first impressions weren't favourable. The dorms are arranged in sets - each set consists of 3 dorms together with a shared kitchen, common area, and bathroom. I'm in a miniscule 4-bed dorm with 2 girls and it's a tip, with their belongings strewn all over the place. The bathroom is ankle-deep in discarded bikinis, underwear, and what appears to be the entire Loreal hair products range. After dumping our stuff, the 3 of us decided that a cold beer would be an appropriate way to ... read more

Today we went to the most beautiful Kalbarri National park where Sandy (the driver) took us on a hair raising ride down a very bumpy dirt track, we climbed down the gorge (all european anal health and safety requrements out of the window!), we abseiled and swam in the gorge. Nature's window was by far the most beautiful event of my trip, absolutely stunning. We raced an emu along the road for a bit and held a baby one at a road house on the way. We also vistited the Stramatolites - the reason we are all here, again beautiful. Then we arrived in the infamous Denham! Its funny how you can be sitting in a hot tub in a remote part of the world and come across someone you went to school with over 10 ... read more

Horray - Hooray! Today we saw some dolphins and not just some but 7 of them! It was truly amazing! We arrived at Monkey Mia just past 8am in the morning to witness the morning feeding session as the local volunteers talked about the dolphins as we and about 30 others stood knee deep in the foreshore as the dolphins swam amongst us. Not only did we see them but I as well as 4 other children (all under the age of at least 10) were hand picked to hold onto some fish so that we could personally feed the dolphins! Certainly made up for missing them in Bunbury that's for sure. Mikey... read more

We are now staying at the Denham Bayview backpackers hostel in Denham, a 28km road trip further from Monkey Mia. The hostel is great with a good set up including pool, private bathrooms, tv lounges and ping pong and hammocks to your hearts content. We will chill out here today before rising early tomorrow morning to take the short road trip to the world famous monkey mia dolphin resort where we will hope to see some dolphins after our dissappointment in Bunbury earlier on in our trip. Here's hoping. Mike... read more

An ode from Lloyd: Yesterday we finally caught a fish, It was more than anyone could wish. We cooked it at camp, Right under the lamp, And served it on a big dish. Pest In Peace Threadfin Salmon. Died: 29th September 2005 Where: Barn Hill Beach How: On the end of a No: 2/0 sized hook. Epitaph: **** Excellent crumbed. Lloyd pretty much summed it up. The Coral Coast is fantastic for fishing and we have bee lucky almost every time we put the line in the water. At the moment we are in Denham which seems to be one the best kept secrets along this coast. Warm water, great beaches, excellent fishing (even if you don’t have a boat) and a Telenet centre next to a coffee shop and opposite a park so that as ... read more
