Sorry for being out of touch for so long, but been busy since i arrived on this continent! Spent my first 10 days visiting Perth city, which basically was done very quickly as this is not really a city but a town! Strolled around Kings Park where the crows make very loud calls to eachother and also did some window shopping and people watching in the main shopping streets of Perth. The sites were scary, the people badly dressed, and really if you're into fashion of any sort, this is not the place! They have NO dress sense here. Anyway went up to Yanchep National Park which was close to where i was staying at my friends house. There, i was very fortunate to see several kangaroos for the first time in my life, in the ... read more

A couple of days recovering from my epic journey across Australia and I was ready to get out and see a bit more of this immense country. Unfortunately Perth did not woo me. After the bright lights, excitement and happy memories of Sydney, the most isolated capital in the world felt eerily quiet and uninspiring. I did get the train out to Freemantle one day, which I thought had a nicer vibe - and better looking cafes. But after visiting the markets and walking along the Swan River and up to King's Park I was happy to escape the cities. My stay in Perth had a been productive one and I left with a job offer at a pub in Carnarvon. Rather than shooting up there in one 12 hour stint on the Greyhound bus I ... read more

We left Karijini on a real high after two days of experiencing Wonderful Australia. Our battery pack was low, so Grady and I decided that only the kids would have a fan on themselves, to ensure they had a good night’s sleep. We put the legs down at the Chelsea Rest area, just past Paraburdoo. This was a nice rest area with shade and set far from the main road (less noise from trucks). The weather however was hot, with no breeze and no indication of cooling down. We played cards with the kids outside then had no choice but to send them to bed in the heat. I didn’t think I could sleep any worse than I did after Fitzroy Crossing, but this was indeed worse than that. To let as much air in as ... read more

DAY 189 Just when you think things could not get any worse, well ok so yesterday was not a disaster and in the grand scheme of things we have not had that many problems, especially not big ones so we have been exceptionally lucky. Not every day can be a good day and we find that out again today. Last night we were in bed by 9.00, we needed an early night and the camp lights were going to be turned off at 9.00 so it was the best thing to do. We had all of the inner flaps open as it was such a warm night, the light was shining in and at 9.10 the lights went out and not only were we plunged into darkness but the silence also, apart from the Crickets, the ... read more

Our arrival in Exmouth signalled the start of the final leg of our trip around Oz! From Exmouth, the road heads south all the way down to Perth around 1200 km away, where we began our journey on February 1st. Of course nothing is that straight-forward, we had a couple of side trips planned on the way through! Exmouth is a friendly relaxed kind of town and just north of the town is where the famous Ningaloo Reef begins. Ningaloo is Australia's largest fringing coral reef, approx. 300 km long and very close to the coastline - there are lots of beaches here where you can literally wade straight in to the water and see colourful fish and coral at your feet! We stayed 5 nights here so we were able to take things easy and ... read more

Hello everyone and welcome to a belated update of our blog, almost 16 months after we have left home and I’m delighted to announce that Rebecca has found it in her heart to trust me with my very own take on our misadventures around the land. So, what’s to report? Well after nearly 5 months of inactivity and our brains leaking out any sense we once had in that pit of a supermarket we had accumulated a fistful of dollars to have a go at something different. Our remaining days there where quite surprising, The employees of Coles supermarket, Mosman Park, The very same employees who approached us with about as much enthusiasm and camaraderie as if we were ridden with the bubonic plague for the first 4 months of our stay suddenly decided they were ... read more

Up to this point the west coast has been pretty good but this part of it was spectacular. Coral Bay is a small town actually owned by i believe two famalies. It is a great spot to do some snorkeling. About 50 m from the beach you can swim out to the reef and watch millions of fish swim about. And if you get into the current you can just float and let it take you back to shore. We saw so many brillant fish. The coral is hard coral so not super colorful like the soft coral of the great barrier reef but the fish more than made up for it. So many different kinds, colorful ones from very small to very big. Also tons of mantarays. Of course i didn't have an underwater camera ... read more

Forgot to touch on events between Broome and Perth. Alot of the time was weighted in driving the couple of thousand kilometers between the states two main stopping points. The drive is through sparse open bushland skirting onto the coast infrequently and briefly. This was certainly a disappointment for me, having trekked through with a surfboard which never got wet! In retrospect, if I'd read my surfing book, and checked spots on a road map, I'd have realised in advance, there are no roads to surf, 4WD is a surfers best friend in WA! We did manage to get into the Indian Ocean again after Broome, down the coast at Coral Bay while Lauren went diving on the Ningaloo Reef. The beach was sunny and picturesque, but after a breif dip in the cool waters, the ... read more

Well, following a brief argument with the campsite office over our account, and having accepted the fact that it was indeed Monday & not Sunday as we had hotly contsted, we finally left Exmouth a day later than originally planned, heading just a short distance down the coast to Coral Bay. This was our first stop on the actual West coast & daft as it may sound, high up on my wish list of 'things to do this holiday' was to see the sun set over the sea; boy did we see some sunsets!! Not much seems to happen in Coral Bay (having exhausted the diving / snorkelling / whale shark spotting possibilities in Exmouth) so we only stayed the one night. Point to note if ever returning to CB - don't try making a ... read more
