We just had a beautiful long weekend up at Coral Bay. We took the easy way out and flew the 2 hour journey rather than drive the 14 hour roadtrip. We've driven up to Coral Bay before and although I love our sunburnt country, there is a whole lot of nothing that wont keep toddlers entertained lol! I'll add a photo of the red dirt and scrub that lines the journey...although i did get some great views of Monkey Mia/Denham which is also wonderful to see. Coral Bay is a one street town that comes in off the main 'Great Northern Highway' and ends at the southern tip of the Bay. Nigaloo Reef is an amazing reef that is right on the beach! So... just wading around in the water when tide is in you have ... read more

Hope you're well and a special shout out to our friends Kel and Woody on the birth of their daughter Erica. When will we succomb to the joys of parenthood? Never at this rate – all our dosh is going on this travel malarkey, especially now as my tourist visa has been extended to a year, meaning M and I can stay in Oz til next February, though only M can work – sounds good to me! Also Happy Birthday to my sister Clare for Monday 21st May, this blog is your birthday treat! So we left our cosy caravan and relaxed lifestyle in Perth ... read more

Coral Bay 11th May This place is the stepping stone for tourists to visit the Ningaloo Reef and that is what Coral Bay is famous for and the only thing that maintains this small towns existence. The landing of the schooner Maud in 1884 at what is now known as Maud’s Landing, (wait for more on this spot!) is the earliest recorded European activity in the Coral Bay area. The town has a ‘permanent population of about 190, but at any given time of the year it could swell to as high as 5000, this is a tourist mecca on the west coast. Lying at the southern end of the Ningaloo Reef which stretches for over 260Klm to the North, it is the only coral reef in the world found so close to a landmass. At ... read more

Next stop was Coral Bay and from Carnarvon it was a leisurely drive that only took a few hours. On the way in we dodged emus and wild goats; we've dodged all creatures great and small over the past few weeks. We also passed the Tropic of Capricorn which I found kind of exciting; simples minds = simples pleasures. Coral Bay is a small little spot but it was buzzing with activity when we arrived. Essentially there is only one main strip leading into the Bay; however, it is a main tourist attraction. People were everywhere and clearly dressed for the beach. While it was busy it also seemed like a relaxing place to be. There are numerous caravan parks and resorts so for a small place there's clearly things to see and do here. After ... read more

Warroora Station Leaving Carnarvon, we went via the south Road to join the highway so that we could for a last time drive through all the Plantations and pick up some Carnarvon Gold (Bananas) from a roadside stall, fantastic. Joining the North West Coastal Highway (NWCH) again it was point the nose North West and eat up kilometres. The landscape now has become quite flat with red sand and scrub dominating. Occasionally we will pass by or over a ridge but we are now in the Pilbara and it is basically a hot, flat and red landscape, and it is winter! As we headed towards Minilya Roadhouse, our first and only available stop before our destination, we looked at some of the amazing stats for this state, Western Australia. With a total land area of 2,529,875 ... read more

Today was a free day to spend doing whatever we wanted in Coral Bay. A few of the group decided to go on trip to swim with manta rays but we had heard that you need to be a strong swimmer to keep up with the ray as they move pretty fast, so we decided to opt out of that one and spend our money on the whale sharks later in the trip instead. So instead we got up at a more leisurely hour of 7am and went for a run along the coast to the jetty in coral bay. We then decided to have a relaxing day on the beach. The coastline off Coral Bay is home to Ningaloo reef which is the only fringing reef in the world - meaning ... read more

Drove to Coral bay, if you love your snorkelling, then you will love this place... the reef is right off the beach with plenty of marine life. Most of the photos taken are with my Olympus water proof camera whilst snorkelling... Did not do scuba dive there, because I was the only certified scuba diver in the group, but snorkelling was fun, single breath hold usually lasts 45 seconds and allowed me to dive to depth of 5-7 meters, so most the the underwater photos are taken at depth of 5 meters, no wetties required, as water temperature is around 20 degree celsius... Only spend a day there, ideally, would have loved to had a week there, because then could have taken a few boat dives too... Definitely going back there again, perhaps in 2 months ... read more
