As explained in my last post, I had decided to head back onto the Bibbulmun Track and complete another sectional hike. When I had returned from Perth late in 2022, I found that my wife required a knee operation. When she recovered from this, I booked a flight in April 2023 to Perth and back onto the track. Well in February 2023, I ended up in hospital and following an operation in April and subsequent injections into my neck to resolve shoulder pain, I headed back to Perth in late September 2023. I decided to back fill sections of the track which I had missed and not confident in my fitness, planned to head to Collie and walk South to North, to Dwellingup and then go further North and exit the track at Sullivans Rock car ... read more

Stretching for 1000km between Kalamunda in the Perth Hills and Albany on the Southern Ocean, the Bibbulmun Track is one of Australia's longest and most loved walking trails. It's not hard to see the appeal. Almost entirely contained within a string of National Parks and other protected conservation areas, it passes through the botanical wonderland of the South-West forests, before paralleling the Southern Ocean for much of the way between Walpole and Albany. At it's northern end the track runs for 210km  (crossing two highways in the process) without encountering a single town. After that, a small town is passed through roughly every 4-8 days, allowing through-hikers to either stock up on whatever food might be available from the local grocery store, or collect food drop boxes that they have sent on ahead in the post ... read more

Day 22 Yabberup Shelter to Noggerup Shelter (via the Mumby Pub) 20.2 km Beautiful morning after a couple of overnight showers. The gear talk continues over breakfast (oats, chia seeds and dried blueberries- OMG delicious). Offload some trail mix to my hut buddy and am on the trail at 08:40. No hurry with a 20km sunny day. The overwhelmingly crisp smell of pine forest at the 3.9km mark succumbs to smell of wood smoke. The smoke smell continues all the way to the Glen Mervyn Dam and my initially clear views of the dam become shrouded in smoke by the time I cross the wall. GMD is a "swimming allowed" site and you can tell- the place is strewn with trash, toilet paper and discarded clothing - such a shame. It's also a bit of a ... read more

Day 21 Collie to Yabberup Shelter 19.5 km What is it with sleeping in a bed these days? Another not awesome sleep- why? Too comfortable? Too many town noises? Too much to eat last night? Who knows, but this morning is misty and rainy and perfect for a late start. The Colliefields Hotel includes a help yourself breakfast (homebrand bread and spread, individual yoghurt serves and individual fruit cups) and has the added bonus of an onsite cafe which I hit up before starting my walking day (mug of double shot flat white, muffin, ham and cheese sandwich to take-away for lunch $16). Michelle, the owner, drops me back up at the trail head. It's 10:21 and so begins Day 21! I am so glad to be back out here!! The sun has come back out ... read more

Day 20 Harris Dam Shelter to Collie 22.2km ++ Weirdly, I don't seem to have written up this day in my book. The book that I have been reading (and writing a daily diary in to save on weight) is called The Solace of Leaving Early by Haven Kimmel. The book was entirely unforgettable but now I have to keep it as it is my physical record of the walk. I wish it had the physical record of today's progress! As I write this entry very belatedly I am relying on my photos for cues. It's not going to be a standout diary entry folks. So, what stood out today? Someone had planted a fairy garden at the side of the track complete with fairies, coloured glass stones and a gnome baring its backside- not sure ... read more

Day 19 Yourdamung Shelter to Harris Dam Shelter (Very short 3 1/2 hour day) 14.6km I think I have developed tinnitus, or maybe I've always had it but have never spent so much time alone and quiet, but last night as I lay awake at various times I became aware of this low grade, constant industrial noise- worse in my R ear. The rain drops on the shelter roof were also particularly loud. Between those noises and anticipating the wild pigs coming into camp whilst sleeping on the bottom bunk of the shelter, it was an interrupted kind of a night. However, I then managed to sleep in until 07:30!!!! which was no big deal as the day was going to be short. In the back of my mind I was thinking about the double hut ... read more

Day 18 Possum Springs Shelter to Yourdamung Shelter An easy breezy 19.4km Incredible night- the sky was clear (cold) and the moon was so bright you could walk to the loo without a torch. We were all up and ready by 08:00, the others were heading south- definitely an advantage in that they could have a look at the river for a potential crossing and cross as a group, hope they don't have to take the long way. Can't remember if I had mentioned that I had a message from the BTF to say that they were coming to Yourdamung today to do maintenance and that they'd bring me morning tea!!!!!! Well, I was pretty keen for them to arrive, so keen in fact that I'd offered to keep the other's rubbish for them to give ... read more

After finally reaching the bottom of the Diamond Tree, my two feet (and still shaking legs) now firmly back on the ground, I vowed never to climb one again. I don’t suppose it was the height that actually scared me as much that there was virtually nothing beneath you to break your fall if you just happened to misplace a foot or hand and slip off one of the steel rods that they ambitiously call a ladder! After doing it for myself, I’m still not entirely sure how the park/wildlife authorities get away with letting the public climb such a tree, still, it’s another thing to tick off my list! Originally used as a fire watch tower, the Diamond Tree is only one of several giant Karri Trees that you can climb in this area. The ... read more

I was lucky to have family that live south of Perth so really had a local’s view of Oz for the first time. A lot of time while I have been travelling the things you see are on the back packing routes so it is mainly backpackers you see. Western Oz is the exception although we still came across a few; the land has so much to offer the only way to really see it would be to hire a car. With my family leading the way I started in the small town of Collie situated south of Perth. The town is in a great location if you want to sit back and let the world pass you by or if you love nature and walks here is an idyllic place to be. From here we ... read more
