Day 20
Harris Dam Shelter to Collie
22.2km ++
Weirdly, I don't seem to have written up this day in my book. The book that I have been reading (and writing a daily diary in to save on weight) is called The Solace of Leaving Early by Haven Kimmel. The book was entirely unforgettable but now I have to keep it as it is my physical record of the walk. I wish it had the physical record of today's progress! As I write this entry very belatedly I am relying on my photos for cues. It's not going to be a standout diary entry folks.
So, what stood out today?
Someone had planted a fairy garden at the side of the track complete with fairies, coloured glass stones and a gnome baring its backside- not sure that's entirely PC with the impressionable fairies.
Reaching the picnic area was cool, I'd come back if I were in Collie again.
Trash- cigarette butts, empty beer bottles, etc, etc all within very close proximity to rubbish bins.
Signs of Civilisation- roads, tracks and more roads, bullet holes and a bit of noise.
Horses.
A
telephone signal and watching Geoff's car (find my iphone app) heading my way - I beat him to the Visitors Centre by a good hour (he thought he had oodles of time and went birdwatching). After he arrived I jumped in the car only to be asked if I'd picked up my resupply box... doh.
That's about it. An easy day's walk.
Collie- a track town of 7000 people on the banks of the Collie river, it was declared a township in 1896 and is most well known for its coal mining history and more recently, the Muja Power Station. There are a few accommodation options and quite a few cafe's and restaurants as well as supermarkets and a Target. There is also an art gallery which is apparently well worth checking out. The visitors centre is very helpful with suggestions.
I lob in to the Colliefields Hotel having pre-booked a room. It's very walker friendly and has a good communal lounge room/kitchen facilities, but more importantly, the showers are incredible. Did some washing and sorted out my new resupply box while Geoff replaced my Salomon lacing system- remember how they were hanging
on by a thread? They are now looking very clean and shiny on my less than clean and shiny boots! Thanks Geoff. We had a great meal at the pub a couple of doors down before he had to drive all the way back to Perth - I did appreciate wearing my normal clothes for the night before swapping back into my leggings to sleep in the soft bed at the Colliefields.
http://www.colliefields.com/rooms--specials.html Body assessment- excellent, clean, shiny hair Total people seen for the day - No one on the track until Collie
** Items sent home with Geoff from resupply box 3- small bottle of sunscreen (still using the first one), more Panadol, remaining gas from gas can, the novel, 1 yoghurt rollup, 1 night meal (really, really not a fan of that Moroccan Beef), 1 trail mix, 2 mini mars bars. Given to the Brandon the French Tourist- tea, coffee, powdered milk, 1/2 banana (that was a tough one- I really wanted to eat the whole thing myself!), biscuits and trail mix.
