Day 18
Possum Springs Shelter to Yourdamung Shelter
An easy breezy 19.4km
Incredible night- the sky was clear (cold) and the moon was so bright you could walk to the loo without a torch.
We were all up and ready by 08:00, the others were heading south- definitely an advantage in that they could have a look at the river for a potential crossing and cross as a group, hope they don't have to take the long way. Can't remember if I had mentioned that I had a message from the BTF to say that they were coming to Yourdamung today to do maintenance and that they'd bring me morning tea!!!!!! Well, I was pretty keen for them to arrive, so keen in fact that I'd offered to keep the other's rubbish for them to give to the volunteers to take out. Well... the sun was out, took advantage of it and tried to dry out my shoes and warm up but at 09:30 they still hadn't arrived so armed with all that extra rubbish I started my day. Sunshine gave way to clouds but I felt quite energised today and was ready to endure whatever conditions
came my way. Lots of small hills and tracks and roads today and lots of regenerating bush from recent fires.
The most striking thing of the day though was this amazing little patch of almost bright orange/brown ground cover- it was so striking to look at, I spent quite a while here. Second striking thing- 3G signal at the top of a long hill- audible gasp! So, main piece of news - update on Brandon the French tourist - he called Geoff from Boddington to let him know that he is happily working on a farm! I set Geoff the challenge of investigating replacement of my Salomon lacing system. Challenge accepted.
Take a long sunny lunch on the charred remains of some stepping stumps. After this is another brilliant change in the terrain and vegetation, it suddenly opens up and is low lying. Great view back into the forest before entering the Harris River plains. It gets puddly again and the frogs are going nuts. The soil changes to white sand and I go over 2 bridges with the water almost at the level of the bridges. No tadpoles (they must have all hatched if the noise is
anything to go by). It's nice to see the paperbarks and banksia, there's a smattering of yellow and pink flower in the lead up to the Yourdamung campsite.
Of note is that Yourdamung is a no campfire site as it is in the Special Conservation Zone of the Lane Poole Reserve. I reach camp just before 4pm, it's raining again and getting chilly. My feet are like prunes from the wading and wet socks. Early night for me, I can't warm up despite sitting in the shelter wrapped in my space blanket to eat dinner (delicious!!! - spag bol, trail mix and about 1/2 box of Lindt Thins with 2 cups of coffee).
Impressions of Yourdamung Shelter - Very neat and tidy, the outdoor table/benches have been painted bright green. I really like the woodchips on the floor. The volunteers at this shelter have done a great job! Body assessment- still good, I have dried out and no longer have dead shrivelled cadaver feet Total people seen for the day - 0
