Day 42 – Friday 10th August – Cape Range National Park, Tulki Beach campground Mark and I set the alarm for 6am and went for a pre-dawn walk along the beach at Kurrajong, looking out for wildlife and taking photos. On the beach we saw one euro and in the water we saw a couple of humpback whales on the horizon. Once the sun was properly up and the air warmed up a bit I went for an investigatory snorkel along Kurrajong beach. I saw loads of fish in the clear blue water and then found a small coral reef further along the beach which was teeming with fish. It was time to get the rest of the family in the water to see how amazing it was. We had been snorkelling for about ... read more

Day 41 – Thursday 9th August – Cape Range National Park, Ningaloo Marine Park The usual routine of get up, make a cup of tea, have bread and nutella (kids) and cereal (adults) for brekkie then pack up and to be on the road again by about 8.30am, towards what we were expecting to be our favourite destination of the trip – the Ningaloo Reef. By 10.30am we had arrived in the cute little town of Exmouth, the gateway to the Cape Range National Park. We stopped off at the visitors’ centre to get some up to date information and to fill our water tank as that is the only place you can do it. There was considerable action in the car park as we arrived due to a caravan fire which had just ... read more

DAYS ON THE ROAD = 25 Wednesday 25th July 2012 Okay enough's enough. Sleep deprived again due to yet another windy night. Charles and I were awoken in the night by the wind which we then have to rush outside to pull our washing off the line or lose it, we're now awake and decide to do abit of star gazing, we can see more stars here which is really exciting. Tonight we can see Jupiter and Venice as well. Even though I'm tired I do a 5km run to the next bay and see a couple of kangaroos hopping in front of me, fantastic. We went off to another gorge today, Mandu-Mandu Gorge which is also a Class 4 walking trail. We head off at the base of the gorge along the dried up river ... read more

DAYS ON THE ROAD = 24 Tuesday 24th July 2012 Oh my goodness, well that's a weak way of explaining what I'm about to say. I'm shattered, couldn't fall asleep then when I did the wind kicked up over the range and bang hit the van with force. hmmm I wonder whether this is a nightly event. Also ended up closing the bed canvas as the wind was wiping my hair all over the place, which also kept we awake. Oh and not forgetting the crunching of branches just outside our bed. No point complaining, I'm sure the next night's sleep will be better after the activities we have planned today. Charles goes off for a run, good on you darling. We head off to look and walk through Yardie Creek Gorge which is only a ... read more

DAYS ON THE ROAD = 23 Tuesday 23rd July 2012 Today we head around the corner of Exmouth to Cape Range National Park where we will set up camp for 3 nights. This will be the first time we will be solely relying on our water tanks and battery life for a longer period than an overnighter. It should be interesting to see how well we do at trying to preserve water and how well the solar panels work to recharge our on-board battery. hmmmm!! We fill up the two tanks (total 160L) in the caravan and take an additional 25L in water containers that we are going to use for drinking purposes and filling of the kettle. I'm going to have to think about ways to try and save us some water and have an ... read more

Friday June 8th 2012 We woke at 5:45am and left Exmouth at 7am after buying fuel, to get in the line for a campsite at Cape Range National Park. We arrived 5th in line at 7:30am. The office opened at 8am and we got the last campsite available in the park tonight! It’s at Ned’s campground, right near the beach. There are good composting toilets and a few trees. The other campsites don’t appear to have trees. We set up the camper and then went for a snorkel at Turquoise Bay. It certainly lived up to it’s name, being a lovely turquoise colour. We snorkelled the Drift section, where you can drift parallel to shore then walk back to the start. There are lots of colourful fish. The water was very comfortable after the first plunge. ... read more

6 - 15 April 2012 After leaving Francois Peron National Park (and having more trouble getting out of the terrain than we did getting in...) we were booked into a caravan park in Denham. Getting back in to civilisation and structured living arrangements is always a bit of a shock to the system. Still, I must admit, it is always nice to have a hot shower when you haven't had access to one for a while. I also find myself feeling rather grateful to the individual that invented washing machines... Especially since we have been camping in the lovely (but very fine) red dust. So we spent some time in Denham getting "clean and presentable" before mum and dad/nanna and pa arrived. We took a drive down to Shell Beach which is a gorgeous beach south ... read more

22nd April 2011 Well hello to all who read this, Have been anchored here since last night, its 5 pm and nearly finished early sundowner. Our friends Brian and Debbie are only one bay behind us and we will both be sailing north again tomorrow, to possibly Yardie Creek or somewhere close to there. (Be glad to be moving on as we have been waiting, waiting) The insects today have been persistent and varied, it seemed we were at and airfield and all these flying creatures wanted an air traffic controller. At one stage we had 30 little red bodied dragonfly on 1m of cord.( this is the first time we have had insects) Warm enough to go swimming but the joint is full of red jelly fish, so not interested only baths on board today. ... read more

Our next stop on the West Coast was actually Coral Bay but we didn’t hang around there for long. It was school holiday time, and while I’m sure at a quieter time it would be a lovely place to stay, the fact it was packed to the rafters gave it a bit of a Butlins feel and all that was available for us in terms of site for the van was a small, very overpriced, unpowered patch of grass by the road. This wasn’t enhanced when we were cooking that evening in the camp kitchen. Xan was making a ragu tomato pasta, while the mother of a rather large family was cooking a feast of packet cheesy pasta and frankfurter sausages. After observing him adding a dash of wine to the sauce, she asked Xan if ... read more
