Day 35 – Friday August 3rd – Kooljaman Resort, Cape Leveque We had a slow start this morning and sat around reading and relaxing until around 9.30 (finishing the second book in the Millennium trilogy). Today we wanted to go to the most northerly point of Cape Leveque so headed to the Kooljaman Resort, 20 mins up the road. We paid our $10 entrance fee as a day visitor and headed off to our very own beach – Western beach – for a spot of … you guessed it… fishing. The tide was quite high and still rising so we (the kids) had to hop from rock to rock to stay relatively dry. It was a stunning place to sit and watch the sea. Red/ orange rocks behind you, white sand and an undescribably ... read more

Day 34 – Thursday August 2nd – Quondong to Chile Creek, Cape Leveque Feeling really rested after our few days at the amazing Quondong Point, we packed up and headed further North up the Dampier Peninsula to Cape Leveque. We had been recommended Chile Creek as a really beautiful place to stay but first we had to get there. The 100kms of unsealed road was the worst we had driven along – big bumps, undulations, corrugations, deep sandy patches etc. So it was slow going until we reached the Aboriginal Township of Beagle Bay, which is famous for the Sacred Heart Church and its pearl oyster shell decorations. We briefly joined in on a photography tour for a few minutes and took some of their recommended shots. Driving north from Beagle Bay the road ... read more

Cape Leveque or The Dampier Peninsular 2nd June 2012 One of the many things we wanted to do whilst in Broome was to take up trip up the Dampier Peninsular. We had decided that the best way to tackle this was to put the Trakkie in storage in Broome as we had heard that the dirt section of the Cape Leveque road was pretty rough and as the trip was literally an up and back 500Klm round trip using our tent and not towing would be quicker and easier. Keshi Storage in Broome were very accommodating and the cost was more than reasonable so we were set to go. The Dampier Peninsular is home to the Aboriginal people of the Jawi, Bardi, Nyulnyul, Jabirrjabirr, Nimanburru and Ngumbari language groups. Prior to Europeans trading systems between Peninsular ... read more

Today was the start of the Broome to Darwin tour. We had already met our tour guides Nick and Rich as they were staying at the same hostel as us, and we were travelling with the same group from the Perth to Broome leg of the journey, so there was no need for introductions this morning, instead it was straight on with the job of packing the bus. This bus is a little larger than the last in terms of size of the vehicle as it needs to be able to deal with the dirt roads that cover much of the area we'll be exploring, but there is less luggage space and we are also carrying all our swags with us, so it was a tight squeeze to get all the luggage on the bus and ... read more

It's stinking hot and about 23million percent humidity. That can only mean one thing - it's nearly the end of the year! As my excitement for a Perth summer of fun builds, I feel unbelievelby lucky to have had sun, surf (ok mud) and sea for the entire year. The October school holidays were no exception and the next few blog entries tell the tales behind my ongoing Kimberly adventures. Mia and Jarrad came to visit me and we saw more of this spectacularly beautiful country. Late morning on Sunday October 2nd was when Mia and Jarrad's plane landed at Broome airport. After the usual hugs and general jumping/hand clapping we beelined it for Matso's, Cable Beach and Divers Tavern. I had sorted some backpacker accomodation and it was pretty crappy but we survived to tell ... read more

10th June to 14th June Dampier Peninsula At last the road is open up to Cape Leveque and beyond. The road is corrugated and sandy in parts but with the skill of the driver (me!) we arrive safely onto the sealed section just before the turnoff to Beagle Bay. Here there is a church with 3 altars all inlaid with mother of pearl. Even the floor has some shells inlaid. Quite a pretty church. The whole community looks clean but there is no accommodation of any sort, so we had lunch and moved on to Middle Lagoon. Middle Lagoon Whale Bay Café and Camping Ground had a turnoff a few kilometres from Middle Lagoon so we turned in and had a look. The people were friendly and we went to have a look at the campground. ... read more

An opportunity came up at my school for me to accompany a small group of students to the Dampier Peninsula. It was a ‘cultural exchange’ type thing where four of our year 9 boys & four of another schools year 9 girls were to visit a remote aboriginal school. The offer came from a teacher, Paul, at Djarindjin-Lombadina who was anxious for his indigenous students to be exposed to similarly aged white kids. A couple of months of planning and tweaking of the itinerary finally saw the Melbourne contingent of ten heading to north-west WA. The boys were; myself, Nick, Matt, Damien & James. So on Fri 31/Jul/09 we met the girls, Molly, Polly, Caitlin, Hannah and their teacher, Anna, for the first time at the airport. We had an early flight out of Melb; first ... read more
