Today was our second day in the Busselton/Margaret River area. Our plan was to explore the area around Cape Naturaliste and some of the beaches nearby. Although the morning was wet and windy we decided to head for the Cape Naturaliste lighthouse via Bunker Bay by driving westwards through Dunsborough.Bunker Bay was spectacular with trees growing down to the edge of the beach and a long crescent of golden sand. Despite looking out to sea, we saw no whales but enjoyed the 2km walk along the beach.Next stop was the lighthouse which sits on an elevated peninsular overlooking Bunker Bay and the Indian ocean. Over 35,000 whales make an annual northward migration passing up this coastline and we had hoped to see some. It was raining heavily when we arrived but eased as we departed for ... read more

The drive south to Busselton was uneventful. We left at 09.30 in a light drizzle and just over a couple of hours later arrived in Busseltown in the sunshine. Lunch was at at the Vasse Café, a bistro/bar and was an amazingly good garlic-prawn dish on a bed of rice. After lunch we walked the length (about 2.5km) of the Busselton Quay and then headed for our apartment in Peppermint Park, just outside the town. It is very quiet and peaceful here as occupancy is less than 10%. At busy times it would not be so quiet. Dinner was a couple of T-bone steaks done to perfection on the camp BBQ.... read more

Day 5 – Saturday This was a chilled and relaxed day, It was the Voting day for Australia, although I couldn’t vote I felt the atmosphere of the town coming together and getting to visit one of the schools in the area. We went around Nick’s our friends house where I got to play with his 7-month-old Labrador cross Border collie puppy, sitting outside throwing a ball what felt like for hours. When we arrived back in Bunbury at Carla’s house we were great friends and helped hoover and clean out her car, due to there being more sand on the floor than at most of the beaches. Soon enough the car was a good as new again! Later that evening we got to enjoy a Dinner Party, Where I sat at the bar in their ... read more

Day 3- Wednesday, September 4th Ollie told me he would take me out to teach me to drive his car in the morning. Most of the cars here are manuals and I have only had one short lesson right before I left for this trip and I wanted to learn how to drive. Plus I wanted to practice driving on the left side before getting on to a road. We never made it that far though. We drove to the back of this industrial park so there wouldn’t be any cars around while I was learning. He saw this path that lead off the road and down toward a lake and he decided to follow it. There was some guy in an SUV driving around in the middle of the lake, which was odd. Literally driving ... read more

Today we needed to pickup provisions from Woolworths and use McDonalds' free wifi before setting off on the days activities. Our first stop was the Princess Royal Fortress which commands the main harbor of Albany; the fort was built in 1893 after a pre-federation agreement to share funding by the existing colonies. Britain supplied the armaments and the fort remained combat ready between 1895 until 1956 when all Commonwealth shore defenses became redundant. The site served a variety of purposes over the decades but has since been restored and now houses a first rate memorial to those who once manned the site and/or fought for Australia in the First World War. Albany is important as the first and second waves of troops left here for Egypt and then Gallipoli and the town was the last sight ... read more

Today is a very exciting day. First it is not raining and second Michael and I are playing golf. Before golf, we ate again a Henry’s for breakfast. There food, breakfast in particular is so good. I ate a smaller portion today because the one I had yesterday was way too much. I think I am adding weight on this trip, yuck. Of course, had to have my flat white. After breakfast, Cindy’s Dad drove to his plant. On our way to the plant he took us along a seacoast route with beautiful views of the ocean and bay. We actually saw a large group of kangaroos in a field. Michael just loved that. We arrived at Cindy’s Dad plant and he did a quick drive by the new expansion they are almost done with. Good ... read more

Busso – an update and getting ready to get back on the road again! Sunday 1st April 2012 It has been a while since our last entry and now we need to fill you in on a few more happenings here over the past few weeks. Apart from my exploits to help get the 2012 vintage in from many of the Margaret River Region Wineries which will ensure a successful vintage for all you wine lovers, we have been busy attending and doing ‘other stuff’ as well. One of the really good events we went to was the Dunsborough Festival where we attended both of the night concerts, the first being “A Night of Classics” with The Cape Divas. The Cape Divas are an exciting vocal duo made up of Sussane Siegrist - a graduate of ... read more

Its now early March and we have returned to Western Australia and are on our way again. We went back to NZ in mid October for a wedding, caught up with everyone, had a good Christmas with our family and friends, and generally had a good time. However, the weather was hopeless! Several times I caught myself thinking that the winter wasn’t so bad, when in fact it was December or January. Not a lot of rain, but cloud and wind and more cloud and wind! We flew from Auckland to Perth via Melbourne, crazy, but we saved $NZ400 on the two airfares compared with flying direct. How does that work? Direct should be cheaper than multi-stop?? The probable answer is the West Australian mining industry because about 80% of the passengers on that flight were ... read more

Busselton Activities – 2 March 2nd Our life here continues to be busy with ‘social engagements’ involving our park neighbours occurring most nights. I have adopted the Neil Gronow approach to life and make sure that all new arrivals are greeted and made welcome to ‘our park’, I am sure you would be very proud of me Neil !! So, what is the update on activities, firstly, last weekend WA Volleyball Association held the Busselton Open, part of the State Series Volleyball Competition. This kept us busy for half a day watching the five courts in action and looking around the supporting activities in town. While this was all going on the WA Long Board Surfing titles were being held at Yallingup, I told Trish I should have entered, but I was told to ‘grow up’. ... read more
