After enjoying our days beside the Murrumbidgee River, it was time to head south and west to Mildura. For us, we wanted this to be a special highlight with several things to see and do. The journey took us back through dry region pasture (wheat and cattle) until we came back to the Murray River. All of a sudden, we were back in highly productive fruit and viticulture, particularly on the left side of the road which was closest to the river and irrigation system. The area around Mildura is known as Sunraisia. It is just staggering the area under intense cultivation. But Mildura was not about horticulture, but the historical paddle steamers on the river. Putting a time line on the history here is interesting. The six of us were booked for a lunch cruise ... read more

We’ve left South Australia behind us and headed back into Victoria now. Tonight we are camped at Murrayville, a little town in the heart of the Victorian wheat belt which they proudly proclaim as you drive into town, is the gateway to the Victorian outback. And it’s raining. Today we have had our first rain while travelling, apart from the very first day when we left home. You just have to rejoice over the rain. This country is so parched and thirsty. In fact, the longer we stayed in the Riverland, SA, the more aware we became of the terrible hardship inflicted on that region because it is so deprived of water. In my blogs, and in my search for beautiful sights to photograph, I have concentrated on the beautiful and the amazing. But, as the ... read more

Mildura has tripled in size since I last saw it back in the late 90s. Leaving the peaceful banks of the Murray River at Merbein last Monday morning and driving into Mildura was a shock, a non too gentle reality check and reminder of the surburban sprawl that is creeping too fast through this beautiful land and devouring natural habitats and destroying the landscape. Traffic lights, vehicles driving too fast to who knows where, new housing developments and untidy vineyards and orchards sprawling across what were once beautiful Mallee plains. To be honest, I was very disappointed in Mildura and its surrounds and was pleased to move on when we did. Our time in that area was probably not helped by the weather … the winds howled and the temperature dropped again making it difficult to ... read more

Ah, what a beautiful restful day we’ve had (and needed as we are both very tired). We are camped on the banks of the Murray River at Merbein Common (about 30 kms from Mildura) in Victoria and after arriving at about 11.30am yesterday we have simply sat and watched the parade of people and birds on show before us. The sun has shone brilliantly, people have played and relaxed on and around the river in every conceivable sort of river craft or wheeled vehicle, and the bird life has been amazing. Right from the moment we arrived here, the birds caught our attention, and of course have had our cameras clicking furiously. For a while I thought I had spotted the endangered Regent Parrot, but closer inspection revealed that it is in fact the tiny Red ... read more

After the cold weather on Friday, Saturday 2nd August presented us with a clear cold morning that turned into a warm sunny day. After breakfast we visited the library to check emails and as the system was very slow we headed to McDonald’s to update and issue last weeks Blog and of course enjoy a large flat white coffee. After lunch we then headed to the banks of the mighty Murray River that flows past Red Cliffs and it's famous 'Red Cliffs'. Stunning scenery of the cliffs and the river from a newly built board-walk and lookout. It was then back to St Marks to finish the rest of the weeding. Always good to finish a task for the Church we are at. Sunday 3rd August was the first Sunday of the month and the Sunday ... read more

It has been almost exactly a year since our last caravan trek. During that time we took the caravan out for a few long weekends and also had a fair amount of maintenance performed to fix damage that had occurred in our travels. Our 4WD now has two spotlights again. For those who can’t remember: we lost one spotlight to a wedge tailed eagle strike on the road to Uluru. We have added a wind deflector in the hope that it will smooth the flow of air from the 4WD to the caravan and improve our fuel consumption. The caravan also has a new home – a big rural style shed on Greg’s Mum’s place in the Barossa that keeps the weather and sun off. That night we dined in style and celebrated Angie’s birthday (Greg’s ... read more

The PS Melbourne was firing beautifully with all the aromas of steam and fire with a little oil thrown in. Add a lot of sunshine, space to move on the boat and spectacular scenery and a lovely 2 hour ride was experienced. The panoramas are taken from the back of the boat as we head west or downstream from Gol Gol which is where we turned around. Some of the house photos are in NSW in what is known as "Millionaire's Row".... read more

I’m away. Again. For real this time. Had the last shower I’ll get for three weeks & was ready to go by 7.30am odd. Got the call from Phil at Port Melbourne to be greeted by the news of the first mechanical failure – his name is Neil. Well not really. Neil was the one that had a tyre blow out at bloody Campbell Town. Only an hour and a bit from his front door! We pulled into Goodyear at Taylors Lakes and he had a new tyre put on and then we were off up the Calder. Talk about bloody frost! The further we got up the road the mistier and frostier it was. Were we going the wrong way? After a while we stopped off for a latte (roll your eyes here) and decided ... read more

Today we travelled from Mildura to a little town called, Darlington Point. (a very little town) We had to drive across the Hay Plains to get to Darlington Point. The Hay Plains are a part of the Murray River Basin. At the start of the trip the predominant vegetation was Mallee gum trees. As we drove out onto the Hay Plains the countryside and vegetation changed. It became very barren and flat, with round clumps of saltbush and dry grasses. We were also lucky enough to see about six different rainbows on the way across the Plains as there were big storms on either side of us. We then passed through a large region of cotton growing. The cotton had all been harvested and rolled up into big yellow bundles. It was an interesting drive today. ... read more

Today we very carefully drove our van to the repair shop, we were very relieved to make it safely and without any problems. While the van was being repaired Steve and I went for a walk along the river and had some lunch. It is now all fixed, thankfully and we are back at the van park. It is raining but we are nice and warm, having a cuppa and watching the pelicans on the river. We are so relieved that it is repaired and that we can be on our way tomorrow. A big thanks to Riordan Engineering in Mildura who repaired the van.... read more
