The early morning queue of several hundred people showed that ours had not been an original idea to visit the zoo during school holidays. And so before we had the chance to see the world’s diversity of animals, we had a taste of the rich diversity of Australians. Inside, children rushed around excitedly, while parents explained things, answered questions, or like me, made things up to disguise their limited knowledge. The zoo is too big to see everything in one visit, so we chose a route past key animals. The big cats are remarkable for being impressive even when seemingly comatose. Byron gave the lions and tigers his best ferocious cat impersonation, which is eerily like his dragon, dinosaur, and monster impersonations. The big cats, perhaps recognising him as one of their own, seemed quite relaxed. ... read more

I just had to put up a few pics of my trip to the Zoo. The Melbourne Zoo has more than 320 species on view, and it is an "open range" zoo, so none of the animals are caged. You are able to walk dirt paths and brush right up against the animals. There is an "elephant walk" and and "orangutan sanctuary". My favorites were the orangutans and the penguins. Enjoy!... read more

It's Leap Day - wow!! I could propose to an Oz today, but on the other hand!! I am staying with Clare and Andrew in Melbourne for a week, exploring the city which is incredibly vibrant. The centre is a wonderful collection of modern buildings - and yes, next week we are going to come into the library and I will try to write more and put photos in - they have the necessary bits on the machines here!! We are off to Wilson's Promontary in the next few minutes - the chance to see Kangaroos wallabies and all sorts of other wild life. I will write about it all when we return. ... read more

We're going to the zoo!! Woohoo!! You may be starting to wonder whether I'm starting to get a bit zoo crazy, and I think you may be right! We both felt that after the disppointment of Australia Zoo we needed to see a proper zoo. We haven't really had the best start to today, as we awoke to the sound of rain, when the weather forecast had promised a beautiful day! We got up and get ready anyway in the hope that it may clear, and hop skip and jumped down to get our promised pancakes, only to find that run out!! What kind of shabby operation is this?!! Ah well, free cornflakes and toast it was! Can't really be knocked. We set off in our layers and macks and got on the tram. The brochure ... read more
