You know life as a T-Shirt has been greatly unrated! What a life I’m having! I was a bit scared at first when I was put in a dark container and sent away on a big silver bird… but then, guess what, my container was opened and I was in Fox Studios being signed by superstar Hugh Jackman (who was filming the final scenes of the cinematic epic “Australia”)! Then I met cricketing legend Shane Warne before being returned to my owner, Auntie Lynn, for the official Sydney Launch of my historic journey, which you can see here:
That’s right, I met pop star Leo Sayer who made me “Feel like dancing”, Australia’s national treasure Barry Crocker, Dr Who girl Katy Manning and Australian Idol’s Cosima De
Vito. Then Auntie Lynn took me to Melbourne, and what a time I had there! Read on…
I arrived in Melbourne early 3rd September and was the coldest I have ever been. It’s just as well I’m a long-sleeved T-Shirt or I would have had to find something to rug up in! Despite the cold, it was a stunningly sunny day with clear blue skies and only the faintest hint of a breeze. From the airport I was whisked directly to the Melbourne Yacht Club Hotel in Waterfront City, Docklands. I could feel the excitement brimming in my fibers because this was the venue of Variety Victoria’s Ambassador’s lunch. Nestled into their toasty warm and luxurious lounge overlooking the rippling waters of Port Philip Bay, I was about to meet renowned Australian impresario and raconteur John-Michael Howson, member of the hit pop group “The Seekers” Keith Potger, and the man behind “Dickie Knee” on “Hey Hey It’s Saturday” (which ran on Australian TV for 28 years) one of the most successful personalities in Australian radio and television over 40 years John Blackman. What lovely men they all were, signing me gently, carefully, and with the knowledge that ultimately we
are all collectively doing a good thing to help special children in need. Then I was off to meet more stars on my Magical Melbourne Mystery Tour…
Before I knew it I found myself in the offices of Melbourne’s highest rating talk-show radio, 3AW, to meet none other than Australia’s unique, opinionated and often controversial personality - the sharp, the shrewd, the warm colourful entertaining and generous Derryn Hinch (he’s also a good mate of Auntie Lynn’s). Derryn was the first star to sign me who picked up on a little poem attached to me about the pens available to sign me with. The lovely Aldwyn Altuney, who has been my official photographer, has snapped a fabulous shot of Derryn holding up both the pens and the poem in front of a portrait of Derryn that has a very interesting history itself (ask me about that some time!).
From Derryn we had to race to the set of Australia’s most famous and internationally broadcast soap “NEIGHBOURS”… the show that launched the career of Kylie Minogue. The traffic en route was TERRIBLE and I was very worried that I wouldn’t make it on time, but Auntie Lynn called ahead
and the gracious Tom Oliver, who has played Lou Carpenter on the show for the last SEVENTEEN YEARS was more than happy to wait for me… and oh gee we had some fun together!
What a charming and bighearted man Tom is… not to mention full of fun! The lovely Adlwyn had Tom hold me up after he signed me to take some shots of him in front of the huge cast ensemble photos in the entrance hall of the studios. I’m a double XL T-Shirt with long sleeves, so there’s quite a lot of me for one person to hold up… and part of me ended up in Tom’s mouth!!! That was a first for me!! But it made for a really terrific photograph (which you can get by contacting Aldwyn).
My next stop is the Nation’s capital, where I’ll meet former member of the hit group “Midnight Oil” turned Minister for Arts and the Environment, Peter Garrett, MP, then I’m off to Hong Kong to meet Jackie Chan before I leave the Southern Hemisphere for Hollywood (where I meet a galaxy of stars) and onward from there for a few BIG surprises. Keep watching - I’ll
keep you posted on all the latest news, hot gossip, and I’ll gradually reveal my surprises… all at my travel blog at www.themagicalscarecrows.com
The Magical Scarecrows, also created by Auntie Lynn (who has now been nominated for the Pride of Australia Medal for her charity work) were originally produced for Auntie Lynn’s “Kids Who Read Succeed” program to give books to needy children all over the world absolutely free of charge. Now The Magical Scarecrows and Auntie Lynn have created me to raise funds for Variety, the children’s charity. When I return from my year-long, globe-trotting journey I will be framed and auctioned to raise funds for disabled and disadvantaged children by Variety Victoria at a big red-carpet, black-tie, high-profile, celebrity media gala some time in 2009. Meantime, don’t forget that everyone from 2 to 92 needs a Magical Scarecrow in their lives, so visit the website today: www.themagicalscarecrows.com.
Auntie Lynn’s happy snaps of the Melbourne trip follow, but for official photos please contact the lovely Aldwyn Altuney whose details are at the beginning of this message.
