Hi everyone! I hope you are all enjoying the start of term? I miss you all so much! How is it going? It would be great to hear your updates. So, now for my update... I have been staying in the City Centre of Melbourne for the passed two weeks and have loved it. Melbourne is very quirky and there are lots of weird and wonderful things to discover in the places you least expect. There are lots of little lanes that are fab... lots of places to eat and drink and of course the tennis! I was lucky to attend the quarter finals for two days at the 'Rod Laver Arena' for the Australian Open... thankfully it wasn't 40 odd degrees like the week before. I'm not sure I could have sat through it otherwise! ... read more

Hi from Melbourne! Just a quick message to say that I have been in Melbourne for a few days now... I will be updating photos next week for you all :) I haven't seen much of Melbourne yet as I have been spending all my time in the library for a degree deadline that is looming for this coming Monday. I am definitely exploring after that! Quite thankful for the air con in there actually :) It is SO hot here at the moment! I am going to the tennis quarter finals next week (Tues and Wed) but the temperature is due to drop a little by then, thankfully! Poor tennis players, playing in this heat :( Lastly, I would like to congratulate all of the exam children that received their results from last term. I ... read more

16 hours of opera. 4 performances spread over 8 days. Wagner's Ring of the Dwarves is reputed to be western societies longest and most complex opera. It was written over 130 years ago in Europe, using, but more often breaking, established opera conventions. Conventions that are well known in modern western movies. How many recognize Darth Vader's theme music, or who expects the music to become grand and menacing when the baddie enters the scene? All thanks to Wagner's Ring Cycle. The production budget was $AU20 million. The orchestra pit had to be enlarged to hold the 120 musicians, 3 Wagner Horns were commissioned at $10,000 each and Brunhilde is a London Diva with a fantastic voice. Apparently, there are people who fly around the world to see every ring cycle, payed $2000 a ticket, $200 ... read more

We were both really looking forward to getting to Melbourne but mainly to see Lauren, our friend from back home who was working out there. From Sydney the flight to Melbourne took an hour and we touched down around 10pm. We met Lauren with massive hugs outside the station and jumped in a cab to her place. We chatted till the early hours of the morning catching up then the three of us all squeezed into Loz's bed and went to sleep. The next morning we woke up pretty late and I was feeling pretty embarrassed as I had ended up trying to cuddle up to Loz in the night thinking she was Jon! Wooops! Eventually we all pulled ourselves out of bed and Lauren made us bacon baguettes for brunch which were so tasty. After ... read more

Hi everyone, We were really, really excited to get to Australia, mainly as we were looking forward to catching up with some good friends and my brother, any familiar faces would have done though!! While it's been fantastic travelling around just the two of us we were itching for some variety and new people to chat to. We've kept ourselves to ourselves mostly and been pretty quiet as we knew that we needed to save money so couldn't have too many nights out - that pattern changed with a vengeance in Oz! We arrived in Brisbane and were met by my friend Ryno. We were all staying in the house of Annette and Greg, Annette is the mother of a good Aussie friend of mine (Alicia) who lives in London. Annette also lives in a lovely ... read more

Tuesday was an orientation day for us around central Melbourne. Following a full English we walked to the City Loop Tram, a free circular service around central Melbourne. Old style Tram cars, the rattling accompanying the full recorded commentary as we ran through the busy city streets. The Tram was quiet when we got on and we easily found seats but by the time we'd been round a full circle it was heaving, crammed tight like the tube in London. Once off the Tram at Federation Square we meandered through the streets and "Lanes"' narrow shopping arcades full of small shops and cafes etc. The afternoon saw us back at the apartment to freshen up for the evening game against the Melbourne Rebels. We walked down to the AAMI stadium early and ate fish and chips ... read more

Saturday, First Test Day! A laze around the apartment until the ritual Spaghetti Bol for late lunch. Having recce'd the route to the ground previously we walked about a mile down to the bars in Caxton St for 5 pm. They were heaving, inside and on the balconies, the streets were full too and welsh songs and calls of "Lions! Lions! Lions! constantly ringing out. Fabulous atmosphere, fans from both sides mixing. We were drinking in the Lord Alfred and the guy next to us, from Dallas, Texas had been there in the same spot since 12.30pm! Down to the ground and grabbed a photo with Ronnie Reagan and a couple with a Bristol Rugby flag. Must admit I was getting excited by now, difficult not to really I suppose. Not as giddy as Sue though ... read more

Wednesday morning we boarded the Miramar cruise vessel on the Brisbane River for a trip to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary some 10 miles upriver. we had an hours breezy cruise viewing the fantastic riverside homes on either bank. Some real quality houses, many with pools, verandas, sports courts and boat jetties. Seems there is plenty of money about in Brisbane. With us on the trip were a middle aged Korean couple and their teenage daughter. Father had a quirky dress sense: bush hat with the chin strap down, buttoned formal shirt, no tie, jeans and a sparkly flecked blazer jacket. His wife and daughter were less conspicuous, or so we thought. We will call them The Gangnam's. They were a bit in your personal space sort of people without actually being loud, always in your ... read more
