Another early start saw us with Sue, Moyra and Pete Driving to Port Arlington by car to catch the ferry to Melbourn. It was a wonderful way to approach Melbourne from the water and interesting to see all the activity on the Yarra River, the bridges, the boats and the cranes which give way to the sky scrapers if the city centre. We had breakfast at 90 Secondi restauran/bar, very nice and reasonable prices. Our primary objective was the Melbourne Art Gallery where we went to see the Terracotta Warriors Exhibition. After the exhibition we met up with the Nicks and had coffee and a walk in the park near the botanical gardens.... read more

No tour responsibilities today! So it was a leisurely stroll to the Southgate entertainment precinct on the banks of the Yarra river for a very nice and relaxing breakfast at Soho Cafe. From there we had a wander around the CBD, we stumbled on the former Commercial Bank of Australia building where back in the gold rush prospectors brought their golden treasure to be weighed and paid out. The concierge in the building gave us a brief but very informative run down on the checkered history of the building, including how the panels below the tellers were hollow and if there was any trouble the tellers (who were all armed) were instructed to shoot through the panels - not the iron bars where a bullet could ricochet anywhere. There were panels riddled with bullet holes closeted ... read more

Today was our last day in Melbourne, we were due at airport at 4pm for 6pm flight so we had most of the day to potter around. We slept in a bit before having a good look around Federal Square and heading for our traditional breakfast (in this case brunch) by the river. Following that we enjoyed a very relaxing and pleasant walk through Alexandra Gardens, a lovely gardens and park right in the heart of Melbourne - a bit like a mini Hyde Park London. There were lovely peaceful walkways, some really cool sculptures and nice garden, water features. I lovely way to unwind and spend a couple of hours and reflect on a pretty full on week! Issues with the small group of dickheads on tour aside we have had an amazing time! The ... read more

Today most of the tour group went lawn bowling, which would have been great fun, however because it was our first time in Melbourne we decided not to bowl but to explore the city a bit. This also meant we were able to watch the Melbourne Cup Parade which was very spectacular indeed. The parade started at 12 noon and we took up our position near the hotel around 11am. By the time the parade started crowds were 10 deep along the route so definitely a good move being early! We were right where the parade started and there was plenty to entertain us as the participants arrived, the crowd built and the parade came together. There were stilt walkers, clowns, marching girls, highland dancers, skaters dressed as jockeys plenty of colour and variety to keep people ... read more

Today we headed out into the country (around 40 minutes) to Cranbourne race track and the thoroughbred racing stables of former Kiwi trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young - Busuttin Racing. It was a unique opportunity to have a look around the stables, get some 'inside knowledge' and have a word to the 'stars' of the show. There's a huge training complex at the race course and Busuttin Racing are one of four trainers currently based there. Trent and Natalie have 70 horses in their care and their training operation is considered a small one. The leading Australian trainers have up to 700 horses in their stables. We had full access to the stables and got to walk around pat the horses, have a chat with them and generally soak up the atmosphere. Trent gave us ... read more

Very early start today-up at 2am. Final check in time was 4am at Wellington Airport and I hate being late. We were lucky to get a lift to the airport with my cousin Leslie and her brother Gary who were also heading to Melbourne for the Cup. They were on the same wave length in terms of timing and as a result we arrived just after 3am. Top marks for enthusiasm all round but unfortunately the airport was closed at that time of the morning - who would have thought! The doors didn't open until 3.30am so we had to hang around outside for a while. No worries on a typically balmy Wellington morning. Once we were inside it was still after 4am before machines were turned on and we could check in. Bit of a ... read more

Geo: -41.4401, 147.135SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11We didn't go to bed until after midnight. It was fun watching the tug boat come to our rescue. As the captain said at one time, "the salvage crew would be arriving". Glenn liked that termlogy. We did get up early, like before 6am, and walked out up on the Deck 13. You could see the full moon, just like we had seen the night before. No one was up. As we walked across the pool deck and to the back of the NCL Star, we ran into Rick. He needed his cup of coffee.Again, we sat at the O'Sheehan's Bar and Grill. This time we sat on the opposite side. I ordered a plate of fruit. Glenn got an omelet. We talked to several folks - the folks that were from Atlanta. ... read more

Geo: -41.4401, 147.135FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10I did wake up several times during the night. However at 9:00am, we got a wake-up call over the intercom from the Captain. He said "Good morning. I have some very important news for you. During the night our propulsion system failed. And currently we are out at sea a drift. We are in no danger. I have called the authorities and they are sending us a tug boat to tug us back to Melbourne. Again, we are in no danger, but we are not moving. You will all be getting a complete refund for this cruise." Glenn then said, "Judy, I called it! I knew we wouldn't make it to New Zealand". Glenn and I went to breakfast down on Deck 8. The atrium is NOTHING like the last cruise where ... read more

Aww... what a lovely time I had in Melbourne. I wanted to come and visit my friends Jamie and Julie who live in Point Lonsdale but while I am here I also managed to meet up with my young cousin Jacqueline and her family, my friend from travelling in Vietnam Michelle and a friend from Langkawi, Dean. It was fabulous catching up with so many friends, I can't believe the friends you meet while on the road and the amount that you stay in touch with, it really is extraordinery, and touching the people go out their way to come and see you... The scenery in point lonsdale is stunning, and further up the coast, we're staying with Jamie and Julie and they are just such fun that I enjoy every second and enjoy meeting all ... read more
