Woke up at 11am and got in Steph's bed for a natter. Steph, Ellie & I picked up ingredients for a picnic which we ate at the Park opposite. Crystal popped round for an hour in the afternoon, then the 3 of us got ready and walked along the River Yarra to South Bank where all the trendy bars and restaurants are. The sky was a swirl of pretty reds and pinks as the sun set for the evening. I admired the wonderful, modern glass buildings and unusual urban art along the way.
All the bars and restaurants were busy despite it only being a Wednesday. There seems to be no hint of a recession in Melbourne. We stopped for a glass of wine in World bar and lay on their comfy leather sofas. At 10pm we walked to the Casino to watch the massive flames shoot from steel poles. It was fantastic to watch - the flames are huge and collect an impressive crowd of spectators, all fighting for the best spot to take the most striking photograph.
We called in to the Casino, a big complex which includes fancy restaurants and designer shops, and each of us placed a dollar on a fruit machine. We had no idea what we were meant to do. There was a oriental display for Chinese New year (14th Feb), featuring a big grey dragon which came to life every 30 minutes. We watched the Dragon show, before drooling over a cabinet of cakes and pastries in an expensive bakery at the front of the Casino. We couldn't help ourselves and the three of us bought a desert to have when we got back to the apartment. I chose a gooey 'Mars Bar Delight'... and I'm pretty sure I made the best selection!
