1st March - Brighton Beach Beach Huts #heygo http://www.heygo.com Our tour started in front of Brighton Beach Hotel, Established as the Royal Terminus Hotel in the 1840s, Brighton Beach Hotel remains one of Brighton's oldest landmarks. Once formerly well known as Milano’s Tavern, Brighton Beach Hotel is the second hotel south of the Yarra River and originally built of local red ironstone. The hotel was once so remote that it was bailed up by bushrangers. Very quickly the establishment of five gracious sitting rooms, seven bedrooms for 30 shillings a week and stables became a destination resort. Also for hire were the prototype bathing boxes, these were wheeled into the bay for a healthy sea dip. Today, the altered but recognisable "Georgian" facade has witnessed it all and is classified by the National Trust. We walked ... read more

Kennedy and I hired bikes and cycled to Brighton beach to see the beach huts. I hadn't even been in the sea since being in Australia so I decided it was about time to go in. We went for a quick swim but the water was pretty cold we didn't last long before we wanted to come out and dry off in the sun. Once we'd dried we cycled back which means we cycled 20km according to the guy at reception. By the time we got back we were really hungry so we looked around for somewhere to eat and found a bar doing $5 pizzas which was too good a bargain to refuse. After being out all afternoon I needed a nap. Once I'd slept and showered, Kennedy and I went for an ice cream. ... read more

Arrived in Melbourne yesterday afternoon and met the group. Good bunch of folks From all corners if the USA. Today we saw the original gaol (jail) from colonial times. Extremely depressing, and heard about their Jesse James. Robin Hood who forgot to give the money to the poor who was hanged hanged for murder. We also saw lots of sports arenas, a war memorial and a local market. The most interesting thing to me is the creatively designed high rise buildings. And I see lots of car models that aren't imported to the USA. Like a small two door RAV 4. Off to an Italian dinner. ... read more

Well I finally made it to Melbourne and arrived on the girls front door step at 1:30am. (3 flights later) Kendra came running out to greet me and we stayed up chatting till the wee morning hours. It was an exhausting day but the disaster at the airport due to the intense fog in Queenstown was all worth it. Friday Kendra took the day off and we went to the CBD (central business district) and hopped on the free visitor tour bus that goes around Melbourne. Population is about 4 million here and the city is absolutely massive so I experienced a bit of culture shock coming over from the small town of Queenstown. That night Alicia and Lindsey met us at the footy game where we attempted to learn the new game. The crowds were ... read more

We had two days of cruising across the Great Australian Bight which is what this part of the Southern Ocean is called. It stretches from Albany to Adelaide. This patch of ocean is somewhat notorious for its rough seas and unsettled weather. We lucked out as we had a relatively smooth but cool crossing. It was a perfect place to celebrate a birthday—mine! The day began when I woke up, glanced out the window and was greeted by a breaching whale. I thought that was a pretty cool birthday present. When we came back from breakfast our steward had filled our room with balloons and birthday banners and ribbons. We played tennis with Barry and Audrey. Barry is a retired British Air Captain and Audrey does human resource consulting. They are good players and have played ... read more

Hey I am new to Travel blog and figured I would put each post from my blog on here. My girlfriend and I travelled Australia and I decided to start a blog about it a few months in. The posts are not all in order but the first one I posted was pretty interesting. This brings me to Christmas Day in Australia Alrite, it's a bit late, but it's something new and refreshing during our summer months! Our Christmas day took place in Melbourne, and on Brighton beach. Unlike many Canadians, a lot of Australians celebrate Christmas on the beach, and instead of Christmass turkey they have a Christmas BBQ with shrimp and seafood! I thought it was pretty interesting and wanted to experience this once in a life time oppurtunity. Here are a few pictures ... read more

Ahhh, Melbourne!!! First off, let me say it was freezing!!! Obviously I have been acclimatized because it was probably 60 degrees during the day and 40s at night... but I was dying!! And I definitely did not bring enough warm clothes, so I wore the same sweater basically every day, hahaha. Overall, it was a really nice, fun, relaxing trip and I didn't spend much money, thank God. So my trip started at 9am on a Wednesday morning (April 15th) and began with a 13 hours greyhound bus ride! It was the cheapest way so I figured what the heck, why not!? So, as I'm waiting for the bus, I see all these hot, European men with guitars and I was like "OMGGG, I'm finally gonna get lucky on public transportation and sit next to someone ... read more

After the excitement of New Years Eve and the discovery that I can drink too much alcohol once more, I had to take a whole day off to contemplate the foolhardiness of my consumption. Once that was over we decided to go and see a bit more of the area than the shopping magnets of South Yarra and Richmond. So we went to the shopping magnet of the CBD!!! Didn't actually buy anything other than a couple of overpriced drinks on the South Bank though. Like many parts of the world that aren't the UK, Melbourne has a wonderful public transport system. Does anyone know why it is that, almost uniquely, Britain manages to have a mass transport system that seems specifically designed to deter people from using it? So having got our AU$6.80 all-day zone ... read more
